Will Dennis, editor of such titles as DMZ, SCALPED, and SPACEMAN shares his firsts with us. What was the first... Convention you attended as a fan? ITHACON, 1978 (ish)...it was in the meeting room of a local youth center. I bought about fifty issues of CONAN — mostly to look at John Buscema’s women. Convention you attended as a pro? SDCC 2001...I got promoted like 2 hours before and found myself on a plane to SD. I was so nervous I drank the whole way and they poured me off the plane. Poor Joan Hilty had to sit next to me. She shook her head the whole time. I deserved it. Job in the comic book Industry? I worked at Comics For Collector’s in Ithaca, NY...does that count? I used to do the Sunday restock (New comics came out on Fridays in those days). They paid me in credit. Life was good. If not, Vertigo, Assistant Editor to Ms. Shelly Bond. There’s a survivor’s group that meets once a month. Comic book you worked on? THE DREAMING #45 (ish)...it had some kind of half-alligator/half-prince on the cover...like so many of my books since then. Comic book you read? Fantastic Four. Like 1973. it had a dude dressed like the Fonz fighting the FF and the Inhumans. That’s the sound of your mind being blown... Graphic novel you read? MAUS....the first I remember being a “graphic novel”. I want to say Camelot 3000 was the TPB I remember reading but I could be wrong about that! Series you collected? Fantastic Four religiously. Amazing Spiderman & Conan close seconds. Writer you followed? Frank Miller was really the first clear “voice” I responded too. The first one I would buy strictly on his name alone. Artist you followed? Well...it was the late 70s so Buscema on anything CONAN. Later John Byrne on X-Men and Jim Aparo’s Batman stuff I had a fondness for. Piece of original art you bought? Comic art? I never bought any comic art. weird, I know. Digital comic you downloaded? Dark Knight Returns!
