The question of whether Edward Nygma might be appearing on Gotham is no longer a riddle.

Nygma will be played by relative newcomer Cory Michael Smith in the eagerly anticipated new Fox drama set in Gotham before Bruce Wayne donned the cowl. Smith will be joining a stellar cast that also includes Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Mazouz, Camren Bicondova, Sean Pertwee and Robin Lord Taylor, many of whom can be seen here in the first officially released images from the show.

On Gotham, Nygma is described as being a brilliant young forensic scientist working for the Gotham PD with a penchant for speaking in… rather cryptic language. Inquisitive, eccentric and outgoing — yet socially awkward — he wants to be liked, but he doesn’t quite know how. Of course, as fans know, Nygma will go on to become the Riddler, one of Batman’s oldest and most nefarious villains (and one who can currently be seen wreaking havoc—also in Batman’s formative years—in Scott Snyder’s ongoing “Zero Year” storyline). Will the Riddler we’ll eventually be seeing on the show take inspiration from the version we’ve seen in “Zero Year”? Only time will tell, but you can bet we’ll be watching alongside all of you to find out!

More to come…
