Celebrating JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED

Celebrating JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED

By Clark Bull Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

Top comics writer Jeff Lemire teams up with superstar artist Mike McKone for the all-new monthly series JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED, starring a new team of powerful superheroes known as Justice League Canada! The debut issue, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #0, featuring the first appearance of the brand-new teenaged Cree superhero, Equinox, arrives in comic book stores today.

Lemire and McKone aren’t the only creative talents to contribute to the pages of this new comic book. During the development of the comic, Lemire took a couple of research trips to where the new Justice League would be headquartered—Mooseonee/Moose Factory, Ontario, Canada—and visited a number of grade school classrooms. Lemire shared a bit about his plans for JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED with the students, and taught them how to draw a few superheroes. Students from surrounding area schools were invited to draw pictures of their favorite DC characters and submit them to Lemire. Some of his favorite student pieces have been printed in this introductory issue and can be seen in the gallery above and a list of all the students who participated can be seen below.

Lemire told the CBC “if I end up going [north] a few times and teaching kids how to draw or about comics, and 10 years from now some kid from James Bay ends up writing or drawing [his or her] own comics, then… the project was worth it.”

If you're in the Toronto area this weekend don’t miss a rare opportunity to get a copy of JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #0 signed by the one and only Jeff Lemire! Lemire will be at Comics and More (at the intersection of Danforth and Linsmore—just steps from the Greenwood Subway Station) on Saturday, April 26 between 12-3 pm! This will be Lemire’s only Toronto-area signing for the comic.
