Admittedly, I say this a lot, but I REALLY wouldn’t want to be Superman right now. But before we get into all the reasons why, can we just take a moment and admire the very first page from this week’s ACTION COMICS #982?

There’s nothing quite like seeing a grown Kryptonian throwing a temper tantrum, is there?

But let’s talk “Revenge,” the blockbuster storyline currently playing out care of writer Dan Jurgens and artists Jack Herbert and Jose Luis in Action Comics. Sick of losing time and time again to the Man of Steel, a dream team (or should we say nightmare team?) of Superman’s biggest adversaries have formed an alliance to take him down. Let’s see, there’s Zod, Cyborg Superman, Metallo, Blanque, Eradicator, and…oh, just some guy named Mongul.

Yes, Mongul. The Warworld overseer who destroyed freaking Coast City, guys!

They’ve already destroyed one of Superman’s Fortress of Solitudes…or is it Fortresses of Solitudes? And is it really solitary if there are two of them?

But I digress…

They’ve destroyed one of Superman’s Fortresses and have set their brutal sights on the other, eager to get their hands on the technology within. Now, taking on six of his most powerful baddies would be just about impossible for Kal-El on his best day, and today is far from that. The events of the previous issue left Superman blind, and it’s unclear whether it’s a permanent condition.

As our villains begin knocking—very violently—on the door, Superman tells Jon to get his mother to safety as the Man of Steel flies out to do whatever he can to slow Zod and his crew down. Using his other senses and the element of surprise, Superman manages to bring down Cyborg Superman, then Metallo, then Mongul…then Eradicator!!!

And then he gets blasted with Zod’s heat vision and it’s all downhill from there.

The minute Superman stumbles, his opponents pounce, throwing him to the floor and pounding him to smithereens.

Yes, things are looking pretty darn bleak for Kal of House El, until…

…until…

…until this happens!

Before he’d flown out to confront his enemies, Superman had asked Kelex to send out a distress call through the omnihedron, the communicator he’d given to many of his allies. And it looks like those allies came through. Supergirl, Steel, Superwoman, New Super-Man…and Lex Luthor! Will one of Superman’s smartest adversaries have what it takes to take down six of his strongest? Perhaps he will with a team of heroes at his side. We’ll have to wait until the action continues on July 12th
