Powers:
The Red power ring allows the user to channel the red-colored rage of the emotional spectrum to form hard light constructs and fire blasts of rage energy. The ring also replaces the Lanterns’ blood with a corrosive energy that can be regurgitated and used as a powerful weapon. 

History:
An early attempt by the Guardians of the Universe to build an interstellar peacekeeping force went terribly wrong when their creations, known as Manhunters, massacred all of space Sector 666. The only five survivors of this event formed a terrorist cell, known as the Five Inversions, dedicated to destroying the Guardians. While the group was imprisoned, one of the Inversions, Atrocitus, became so consumed with rage that he murdered the other four. Atrocitus used their blood as the sacrifice he needed to complete a ritual that allowed him to build the first Red Power Battery. Atrocitus went on to form and lead the Red Lantern Corps, who bestow rings on those whose need for vengeance burns strong. 

This is the oath of the Red Lanterns:

With blood and rage of crimson red,
Ripped from a corpse so freshly dead,
Together with our hellish hate,
We’ll burn you all--That is your fate!
