IGN.com reviews BATMAN AND ROBIN #3

August 27, 2009

Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's Batman and Robin works on so many levels, I'm not quite sure I can name them all.

Like their previous collaborations on New X-Men, We3 and All Star Superman, these three issues pull you in with their manic energy, then blow you away with their insanely high level of craft. And more than anything else, these comics are a crapload of fun.

As he's done so many times in the past, Morrison has blended together a number of strange ingredients and somehow managed to make the volatile cocktail taste good. Capitalizing on the fresh potential of the new Dynamic Duo, he's taken the upbeat, Day-Glo feel of the old Adam West television show and distorted it through the prism of a horrific acid trip. The result is a fast-paced, funny and at times disturbing thrill ride that doesn't read quite like any Batman comic that's come before it. It's by far Morrison's best and most effective work with the Caped Crusader – one that first invites you in with accessibility then surprises you with the depth and intrigue of his more esoteric Batman RIP.
