A note from Bob Harras about DC Comics-The New 52

This has been such a monumental week for DC Comics. What we launched with (the already sold out!) JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 was absolutely amazing. And what’s more exciting still is that it was just a first taste of what’s to come.

Next week marks the release of a slew of incredible series. With ACTION COMICS, writer Grant Morrison and artist Rags Morales’ new interpretation of Superman will seriously blow people away. It really sets the tone for a contemporary Man of Tomorrow. And the dynamic is totally different.

But that’s not all. Jeff Lemire and Travel Foreman’s ANIMAL MAN is a remarkable book that I could not be more excited about.

Gail Simone will be reintroducing Barbara Gordon in the role of BATGIRL with her signature dark, twisted, and brilliant storytelling, accompanied by Ardian Syaf’s breathtaking artwork.

Judd Winick and Ben Oliver's debut collaboration, BATWING, will astound you.

Tony Daniel’s art and story in DETECTIVE COMICS will really surprise people.

GREEN ARROW is a fascinating new take on Oliver Queen and his mission to change the world one arrow at a time.

Rob Liefeld could not be more excited to be returning to HAWK AND DOVE – and his enthusiasm really shows in the final product.

In JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL, Dan Jurgens and Aaron Lopresti have created a team of super heroes led by Booster Gold whose adventures will be spanning the globe.

MEN OF WAR is a truly different and fresh take on a war book, especially considering the context of it being set against the backdrop of the DC Universe.

O.M.A.C. is a non-stop action-packed series that I can best describe as big and loud fun.

In STATIC SHOCK, Static comes to Manhattan and his life changes forever in unforeseeable ways.

Paul Cornell’s STORMWATCH is stuffed with surprises and new characters that will take the series into very exciting (and completely unexpected!) places. Not to mention, Miguel Sepulveda’s artwork is beyond stunning.

And in SWAMP THING, the Plant Elemental will finally return to its own series. Scott Snyder and Yanick Paquette have created an extraordinary series and have really made Swamp Thing their own. You won’t want to miss it.

And that’s just week one.

(Everybody's Talkin' About) DC Comics-The New 52, Early Tuesday AM Edition

As I type this blog post, the halls of 1700 Broadway are mostly quiet. Quiet, that is, save for the sounds of Jim Lee and Geoff Johns doing another round of morning radio interviews.

With less than 24 hours to go before tonight's midnight launch of DC Comics-The New 52, the press coverage continues to roll in. Among the late night/early morning highlights?

* THE ADVOCATE has an exclusive preview of BATWOMAN # 1.

* Check out Grant Morrison's interview with FAST COMPANY. As the internet noted last week, Grant provides some of the best pull quotes in the comic book industry and his FAST COMPANY interview is no exception. The feature also comes with an exclusive page from ACTION COMICS # 1, which shows Superman transforming into Clark Kent.

* Jim Lee was interviewed by the HOUSTON CHRONICLE.

* TIME OUT CHICAGO interviewed local retailers about DC Comics-The New 52 and the impact of digital on the comic book industry.

Oh and those morning interviews?

Here's a rundown of who Geoff and Jim will be talking with this morning:

8:40-8:50 am--WOCM-FM (OCEAN CITY RADIO)

9:00-9:10 am--WELI-AM (ARTFORD RADIO)

9:15-9:30 am--KRCL (SALT LAKE CITY RADIO)

The Epic Conclusion to “Reign of the Doomsdays” Has Arrived

With the Earth four minutes away from complete destruction, a friend and ally lays down his life for the sake of billions of innocent lives. In this action-packed finale, Lois plays a crucial role by reminding Superman that because of his good nature, he will always be an inspiration to others.

The final issue of this run of ACTION COMICS, written by Paul Cornell with art by Axel Giménez, embodies why Superman has remained such a lasting icon and inspirational figure. The issue goes on sale today.

NPR interview with Grant Morrison and an exclusive image from ACTION COMICS #1

If you missed it over the weekend, Grant Morrison had a great interview with NPR’s show, All Things Considered.

Head on over to NPR to listen to the full interview and hear Grant talk about how he got into the industry, what inspires him as a writer, the fundamental differences between Batman and Superman, and the cultural relevancy of comic books. While there, also be sure to check out an exclusive image from ACTION COMICS #1, in stores September 7th.

An unexpected ally joins in the battle against the Doomsdays

As Steel, Superboy, and Supergirl use all of their might to beat Doomsdays across the world into submission, Superman faces down with the real mastermind behind the reign of terror. But even with all of their powers combined, is the super-team strong enough to defeat all of the Doomsdays? Perhaps the help of an unexpected ally will bring them the victory they’re hoping for and stop the Reign of the Doomsdays once and for all.

Written by Paul Cornell and with art by Axel Gimenez, ACTION COMICS #903 arrives in stores tomorrow.

SUPERMAN FLYS SOLO, LOIS LANE RIDES HIGH WITH NEW LOVE IN DC COMICS—THE NEW 52

Today at 3:00 pm PST, DC Comics will host a Superman news panel in room Room 6DE, which will provide Comic-Con attendees with a sneak peek at what they can expect to see in September and beyond. To give fans on-site and around the world a chance to follow the news, DC Comics will be live tweeting the news from the @DC_NATION Twitter handle, as well as posting updates to the DC Comics Facebook page.

Clark Kent is a bachelor, Lois Lane is dating a hunky new co-worker and the sky's the limit for her career as the new boss of the Daily Planet's TV and New media department. The Daily Planet is under new ownership, as the paper has been purchased by a global media conglomerate. Looks like things in Metropolis just got a whole lot more interesting, as Superman news continues to turn heads at Comic-Con 2011.

"A lot of the buzz we've seen in the press and online has been Superman-focused," said Jim Lee, Co-Publisher at DC Entertainment. "We're really excited for fans to see this take on Lois in September. This character has always been a successful modern woman and her new role at the DAILY PLANET opens up dramatic new story possibilities."

Today's Comic-Con panel will cap off a busy week fit for the Daily Planet, which included news breaks on Clark Kent and his changed relationship status with Lois Lane, the cover reveal for “Action Comics” issue one, the release of Grant Morrison's acclaimed book, Supergods and the reveal of the new love interest who has Lois Lane's heart, Daily Planet co-worker Jonathan Carroll.

“We're bringing a fresh perspective, both physically and emotionally to Superman,” said Dan DiDio, Co-Publisher at DC Entertainment. “In addition to life as a bachelor, Clark Kent has to adjust to Perry White having a new boss and a new status quo at the DAILY PLANET.”

“Each decade, these characters represent our own best idea of what we'd like to be.” – Grant Morrison

As part of their extensive coverage of San Diego Comic-Con this week, USA TODAY has posted an article about the evolution of super-heroes. Specifically, how the evolution of super-heroes at this year’s convention are reflections of the times and society we currently live in.

“Each decade, these characters represent our own best idea of what we'd like to be, our own big idea," contributed ACTION COMICS and Supergods writer Grant Morrison. When discussing Superman’s new image, Grant said, “There's a reason why he's dressed in the jeans and the T-shirt and he's Bruce Springsteen Superman. That was the look I wanted to get back, of a genuine working-class hero … You do become a little bit better by trying to imagine what it must be like to think like Superman.”

Check out USA TODAY for the full coverage.
