DC NATION: Wil Moss on the Jimmy Olsen co-feature

jimmy-olsen-color

Wil Moss here, editor of the new JIMMY OLSEN co-feature that starts in next week’s ACTION COMICS #893. Lemme get something out of the way right off the bat -- in this co-feature, sometimes Jimmy is gonna be sporting a bowtie.

Now whether that fact elates or infuriates you (and based on the feedback I’ve gotten so far, there seems to be no in between), you’re definitely going to want to give this co-feature a read.

Why? ‘Cause writer Nick Spencer and artist RB Silva have cooked up an amazingly fun and fresh story not only about Jimmy Olsen, but also about the whole DCU. With Jimmy as your guide, you’ll see a side of Metropolis that’s similar to Washington, D.C., in a way – there, behind all these powerful political figures are young people getting their coffee, preparing their memos, basically covering the details so they can focus on the task at hand. And it’s no different in the DCU, and especially Metropolis, with super-heroes and super-villains.

One such behind-the-scenes-ster is Sebastien Mallory, a fast-rising young executive at LexCorp who naturally serves as Jimmy’s arch-nemesis. Another such character is someone you might have already heard of -- Chloe Sullivan, the SMALLVILLE fan-favorite who is making her comic book debut right here! How does she tie into Jimmy’s life and where does she go from here? Well, you’ll have to check out the comic to find out, but trust me, we’ve got big plans for her!

At the center of it all is, of course, James Bartholomew Olsen. This guy invented zany adventures. And while he’s not gonna be morphing into a giant turtle anytime soon, this comic nonetheless captures the spirit of those stories. You’ll see drunken alien invasions, parallel reality speed dating, the return of the Daily Planet’s Flying Newsroom, and the most important thing in any 20-something male’s life: video games!

Nick & RB were born to make JIMMY OLSEN comics. Nick practically is Jimmy Olsen (did you see him at Comic-Con International: San Diego wearing a bowtie?), and RB packs the pages with so many inventive layouts and clever designs, the next page of comic art you see will look dull as dirt in comparison. Superman doesn’t just pick anybody to be his pal, and these guys are going to show you why that pal is Jimmy.

DC is putting out a ton of killer comics right now (special shout-out to ZATANNA and JUSTICE LEAGE: GENERATION LOST!), but with ACTION COMIC’s gripping lead story starring Lex Luthor by Paul Cornell & Pete Woods and now the addition of this JIMMY OLSEN co-feature? Well, you just discovered your new favorite comic.

The best part is you can actually read this story for free right now via the DC Comics App and through Comixology.com. So check it out online now or in print next week (or hey, why not both?) -- just remember, this isn’t Mort Weisinger’s Jimmy Olsen. This isn’t Jack Kirby’s Jimmy Olsen. This isn’t Morrison & Quitely’s Jimmy Olsen. This is YOUR Jimmy Olsen.

And sometimes he rocks a bowtie.

As we announced a few months back in San Diego, Chloe Sullivan will be appearing in the pages of the JIMMY OLSEN co-feature in ACTION COMICS by writer Nick Spencer and artist R.B. Silva, starting next week.

Sean Chen steps in on ACTION #893

In ACTION COMICS #893, Lex Luthor will be dealing with not just one guest star, but two. First up we have Gorilla Grodd, the menacing giant and the latest villain to cross paths with Lex during his quest for power. The next? None other than veteran artist Sean Chen.

Stepping in to give regular artist Pete Woods a breather, Chen brings his versatile hand to the Superman books in a few short weeks, as Lex crosses paths with the maniacal Grodd. We’ve got a few images to show off, below. But be warned – it’s not for the squeamish.

David Finch takes on BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT as writer/artist

We promised big news. It doesn’t get much bigger than this.

When we announced superstar artist David Finch was going to be joining the ranks of the DC NATION, it was with the news that he’d be handling the covers on BRIGHTEST DAY and ACTION COMICS. But not only is Finch a all-star caliber cover artist, he’s a master storyteller. Fans got a taste of the compelling narrative Finch can create visually with the pages he did in BATMAN #700, paired with writer Grant Morrison.

But we can now add another credit to Finch’s vast resume: writer/artist.

Of an ongoing Batman series.

Starting in November, Finch will take the reins of BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT, a new ongoing Batman title featuring the hyper-detailed and kinetic artwork Finch has become known for plus his unique and yet classic interpretation of the Caped Crusader. The series will also see him paired with legendary inker Scott Williams.

Can’t wait until November? The fun begins in October, with BATMAN: THE RETURN, a one-shot featuring Finch’s masterful pencils and words by Morrison, kicking off a new era for the Dark Knight and giving fans a quick taste of what’s coming up for Batman.

So what does Finch have in store for readers, both art-wise and as the writer? We caught up with him to get the lowdown on the new book:

“I've made no secret of the fact that I've wanted to draw Batman for a very, very long time. Batman and his world embody everything that I love about Superhero comics, and I could not be happier that I've gotten this opportunity!

Maybe the greatest thing about Batman is his versatility as a character. He can be so many things to so many people. For me though, the Neal Adams, Denny O'Neil issues from the early 70's are the most definitive. That work casts a very long shadow over every Batman book that has come out since, and I think its a testament to it's strength that close to 40 years later it remains modern and vital. Batman is at his best with his hands dirty, chasing the worst of the worst with everything on the line. He's a detective, first and foremost. But he's also the enforcer. Nobody gets away with crime under Batman's watch, and he makes sure they think twice before they step over the line again.

The Dark Knight takes Batman outside what he knows, into a world of demonology, dark arts, and mystery. He's the ultimate detective, faster, stronger and smarter than any villian, but now he faces creatures to whom logic and mortality don't apply.

I want Dark Knight to be true to Batman's street level, crime fighter roots. He'll face a rogues gallery that we're all familiar with, but this book will take him on a darker path where he'll be stretched to his physical and psychological limits.”

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #1 hits in November.

It really IS the BRIGHTEST DAY

We shared some nice WONDER WOMAN #600 news with you guys yesterday, but why stop there? It seems like the sellout craze is spreading across the DCU, with ACTION COMICS #890, BATMAN BEYOND #1, BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #1-2, BIRDS OF PREY #1, THE FLASH #1, GREEN ARROW #1, JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST #1, LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #1, SUPERMAN/BATMAN ANNUAL #4 and ZATANNA #1 flying off the shelves.

And with stellar talent like Geoff Johns, Francis Manapul, Gail Simone, Ed Benes, Paul Levitz, Yildiray Cinar, J.T. Krul, Diogenes Neves, Judd Winick, Keith Giffen, Aaron Lopresti, Paul Cornell, Pete Woods, David Finch, Paul Dini, Stephane Roux, Renato Guedes, Eddy Barrows, Adam Beechen and Ryan Benjamin, how can you go wrong? The fans have spoken. But fear not – second printings are on the way for these, in case you were late in swinging by the shop.

And this is only the beginning, folks. Stay tuned right here for more.

The cover to ACTION COMICS #894 will surprise you

ac_cv894_pencils-300-copy1

There are some characters that connect so strongly with readers that they take on a life of their own, becoming more than just ink on a page. Like modern fables and folklore, comics create strange and exciting worlds and landscapes for readers to visit and experience, and they populate these worlds with characters so well-defined, it’s as if we’d known them forever.

Neil Gaiman’s SANDMAN is one such work. An epic, 75-issue opus that was both genre-bending and trend-setting during its original release and to this day, it, like WATCHMEN and a number of series, is what many point to when discussing comics as high art. It’s not a stretch to call it a masterpiece.

But why are we talking about SANDMAN on the DCU blog, you ask?

act894cvrinks-cmyk1

For those unfamiliar with the character at the center of the cover – and shame on you if you don’t know who that is – that’s Death, sister to Dream of the Endless and one of the most enduring characters introduced during Gaiman’s 75-issue SANDMAN series. Beautifully presented by ACTION COMICS cover artist David Finch, the cover begs the question – what is Death doing in ACTION COMICS?

Though the worlds of the Sandman and the DC superheroes have bled into one another from time to time, ACTION COMICS #894 marks a unique moment for not only Death, but the star of ACTION – Lex Luthor. Luthor, as fans of the series know, is in the midst of a storyline that takes him on a winding and dangerous quest for power – a quest that will bring the megalomaniacal villain into close proximity with characters in and beyond the far reaches of the DC Universe.

We touched base with writer Paul Cornell who, along with artist Pete Woods, are the team entrusted with the task of chronicling this special issue. Take it away, Paul:

“Death appearing in Action Comics was my own mad idea, the extreme case of putting Luthor up against characters he's not used to dealing with.

“I'm very pleased that, after I ran the idea by him, Neil Gaiman approved me using Death in this issue. He's been very supportive. It's so interesting to see her back in the DC Universe. Though Vertigo readers can rest assured that the character, and the way she's used, will be true to the spirit of what has gone before.”

ACTION COMICS #894 hits in October.

PAUL CORNELL ON ACTION COMICS #890 AND BEYOND

SM_Cv700_ds.indd

All this week, we’ll not only be checking in with writers and artists about their contributions to SUPERMAN #700 and their thoughts on the character, but we’re also getting sneak peeks into the upcoming events unfolding in the pages of ACTION COMICS, SUPERGIRL, SUPERMAN and SUPERBOY. First up, we have writer Paul Cornell – who, in a bit of news we’re happy to announce here, just signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics – talking about his first arc on ACTION COMICS, which pairs him with artist Pete Woods. The focus? Someone we’re all familiar with – the evil mastermind known as Lex Luthor.

But first, let’s see what Paul has to say about his new exclusive deal. Take it away, Paul:

“I'm delighted to have signed exclusively to DC Comics. The work Pete, Matt, Wil and I are doing as a team on Action Comics has been tremendously satisfying, and I'm enjoying my other creative partnerships here just as much. I feel thoroughly cosseted! And hey, Lex Luthor! Who wouldn't be psyched to get to play with name recognition like that?”

Thanks, Paul. But don’t stop there. What’s coming up in the pages of ACTION COMICS?

“With his experiences in BLACKEST NIGHT, LEX LUTHOR learned what true, unbridled power feels like, and it’s left him focused on regaining that power—and more. He’s an addict now. So Lex has found himself a plan, a way to scratch that itch.

“As Lex proceeds on his quest, we’ll see more of what drives him, what’s inside this man. We’ll also see how he deals with encounters with the greatest villains of the DC Universe, characters from outside his genre and his comfort zone, as he discovers the path to ultimate power leads him to several surprising places on Earth and beyond.

“To name just a few of the villains we’ve got lined up… in the forbidding terrain of Antarctica, Lex will face off against DEATHSTROKE. He’ll match brains and brawn with VANDAL SAVAGE, leading to a crossover with SECRET SIX. He’ll find himself the target of LARFLEEZE, the Orange Lantern, himself still lusting for power. And he’ll match his own savagery against that of GORILLA GRODD. That battle leads to an encounter with a really unexpected character. And we’ve held back a few of the most interesting and surprising names he’ll be going up against.

“All of this leads to issue #900. Which will be a responsibility, and a milestone, and a beast of a book. So no pressure. It brings Lex’s quest to an end, and solves several mysteries introduced along the way. I think it’s a great story, and I’m proud to be working with a great team to bring it to life.”

ACTION COMICS #890, featuring art by PETE WOODS, will be on sale June 30th.
