Countdown to Comic-Con: Adam Glass on SDCC

Every day until the start of Comic-Con, we’re bringing you something cool to help you count down the days to the start of the big show. Last week we debuted our new Comic-Con print ads. For this week, we reached out to some of our favorite writers and artists to ask them what they enjoy most about San Diego Comic-Con.

Today’s Comic-Con recollection comes care of Adam Glass, who’s been showing us what it’s like to live (extremely) dangerously in the pages of Suicide Squad. Here’s what Adam had to say about Comic-Con:

“1988, fresh from the big apple, I went to San Diego Comic Con with a buddy of mine. It was my first real ‘Fanboy’ experience, though back then I think we were just called ‘nerds.’ Little did the world know we would soon rule it!

But I regress. We'll get back to world domination later.

At the Con, I remember just being blown away by the costumes, art, merchandise and of course the writers and artists. I felt at home amongst the sea of fans who, just like me, dared to dream a little differently and weren’t afraid to express it. It was like the comic book spring break, and I was in awe. Ever since that experience, I can’t wait to go back every year. But now I go with my family and watch my children and others with their eyes wide open as they watch this crazy circus we call Comic-Con. Dreaming of something we haven’t even thought of yet, but will probably see there some day soon...”

Adam will be signing in the DC booth and will be a part of the DC Comics – The New 52 panel on Friday, July 13th at 4:15 p.m. (also in Room 6DE). But don’t sweat it if you can’t be there, because we’ll be covering that panel live as it unfolds right here on DCComics.com. Don’t miss it, and be sure to swing by THE SOURCE again tomorrow for our next Countdown to Comic-Con feature!

SUICIDE SQUAD #6 Goes Back To Print

SUICIDE SQUAD #6, featuring the beginning of “The Hunt for Harley Quinn” storyline, has sold out and will be going back to press. Written by Adam Glass with art by Clayton Henry, SUICIDE SQUAD #6 reveals glimpses of Harley’s origin as the Squad attempts to find her now that she’s escaped Belle Reve Penitentiary. Glass told USA TODAY, "This is Harley's solo album," he says. "She's going out and trying to see what the world is like out there. It doesn't mean she doesn't love Mr. J — that's the love of her life. So if you didn’t get a copy yet, you still can. The second printing will arrive in stores March 21, 2012. Mark your calendar!

USA TODAY previews SUICIDE SQUAD #6

Harley Quinn has escaped Belle Reve Penitentiary and is on the run. In next week’s issue of SUICIDE SQUAD the Hunt for Harley begins.

USA TODAY features an exclusive preview of SUICIDE SQUAD #6 and spoke with the comic book’s writer, co-executive producer on the CW TV series Supernatural, about the storyline and the Squad. Head on over to the interview and look for SUICIDE SQUAD issue #6 on Wednesday!

DC Comics All Access: Pat McCallum

I'm on a Suicide mission.

No, wait, that sounds way too dramatic. The truth is I'm holding a donut, checking e-mail and I work in comics. It's March 2011, and I'm in the opening stages of putting together a new SUICIDE SQUAD monthly series as part of The New 52.

I've just hung up the phone with the series writer Adam Glass - his SQUAD pitch is fantastic. His two big guns: Deadshot (classic SQUAD character, no problem getting that approved), and ... Harley Quinn. Hmmm. It's an intriguing idea. Harley's a great character, she's a fresh face on the roster and she - as a Batman villain - brings star power to the team. Most important, Adam's got a take on the character that pushes her in a new direction. Trick is she's outside the SUICIDE SQUAD stable of characters. Unlike Deadshot, Harley's under the BATMAN umbrella. I gotta work this through with BATMAN Group Editor Mike Marts.

Mike's crazy busy prepping all (!) the Bat books that launched as part of The New 52, but he makes the time. We talk it through and he digs it. Greenlit.

We're rolling.

Plots get approved, scripts get written, and we're almost ready to start drawing. The last piece of the puzzle comes in the form of an e-mail attachment: DC Co-Publisher and guy-who-is-crazy-good-with-a-pencil Jim Lee steps in with a new look for Harley. With all character designs in place, pages for the series begin pouring in.

That launched SUICIDE SQUAD #1 and it's all been building up to SUICIDE SQUAD #6 and #7: The Hunt for Harley Quinn. Harley searching for the missing (dead?) Joker, her new origin revealed, the Squad relentlessly chasing their AWOL member through Gotham City ... by story's end, dirty secrets are exposed, characters die, and we make the team rue the day the Squad writer requested Harley for the team.

Place your bets: SUICIDE SQUAD #6 & 7, Harley Quinn vs. the Suicide Squad!

- Pat McCallum

Pat McCallum is the editor on SUICIDE SQUAD and a bunch of other stuff. He enjoys donuts.

New origin for Harley Quinn revealed in SUICIDE SQUAD #6 & #7

In this two-part story “The Hunt for Harley Quinn” written by Adam Glass with art by Clayton Henry, Harley’s former teammates on the Suicide Squad track her through Gotham City as she tries to discover the truth behind the Joker’s disappearance.

Along the way we’ll learn Harley’s origin as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a groundbreaking psychiatrist who works her way into the Joker’s mind as he works his way into hers, revealing her own madness within.

When we asked editor Pat McCallum about this storyline here’s what he had to say, “We don’t promise a happy ending. But the book’s called SUICIDE SQUAD, so I guess that should be obvious. 'The Hunt for Harley Quinn' is the mission we’ve been building to since SQUAD #1. While we’ll learn Harley’s origin, observe her first meeting with the Joker, see a new Squad lineup AND learn why King Shark has been acting so weird, it’s the last few pages of issue #7 that are a punch to the gut. For the Squad members that survive (and not all will), 'The Hunt for Harley Quinn' will leave them scarred both inside and out. Deadshot fans be warned.”

3 Things You Need To Know About 2 New Members of Suicide Squad and 1 Major Betrayal

Some have said that three is the magic number. If that’s the case, November should be a fascinating month. Here at THE SOURCE, we’ll spotlighting key third issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with an ongoing series of posts titled “3 Things You Didn’t Know About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.” Expect the unexpected–in threes.

Two new members join the Suicide Squad in issue #3, one from the classic line up (and that’s all I’m saying about that for now), and one brand new character. The newbie is called Yo-Yo, and he can alter his mass and thickness, perfect powers for a thief… or a member of a covert operations squad. We’ll see him in action for the first time, and start to slowly peel back the layers of his personality, who he is, and how he ended up in the Squad.

The other big thing coming up happens a little further down the road. One of the Squad members betrays the team in about the worst way possible, turning their world upside down and threatening to expose them. There’s nothing more worthless than a burned covert operative, so we’ll see what lengths Waller and the Squad will go to maintain their cover. We’ll also learn a lot about our rogue when they go off the reservation, their back story, and what their agenda is. It’s a big, wild two-part story, so buckle up because it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

52 Thanksgivings!

Really. Here we are into the third month of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, and you have all helped us turn it into a runaway success we can all be thankful for.

I personally am thankful for having been involved in this history-making venture, and we are not about to let up.

On a recent mini-trip out west, one of the days involved getting up at 5 A.M. Pacific Time to make sure it would be in the right time zone to go over JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK with writer Peter Milligan in England. We talked over how to grow the threat of the evil witch Enchantress and what it would mean to Deadman.

Then Group Editor Ben Abernathy and I reviewed what is happening in the HUNTRESS mini (which I had just expressed to artist Marcus To the week before in Canada how he is kicking butt with Helena) and the big surprises there.

Next, I met up with Mike Johnson, one of the Mikes writing SUPERGIRL (the other is Green). We talked about some of the epic adversaries that Kara will soon face as she begins to understand her origins and place here on Earth. Next, Creative Executive Adam Schlagman and I braved L.A. traffic (a challenge not for the week willed--seriously, anybody who drives out there deserves a GREEN LANTERN ring) to go over with Scott Lobdell what the evil organization N.O.W.H.E.R.E., that we so far have seen only in TEEN TITANS and SUPERBOY, is up to and what it means to the Young Justice of the DC Universe.

Barely scratching the surface of the threats that could be uniting against our heroes, we had to rush back to West Coast DCE offices so Adam Glass and I could talk about some rather nasty things that he is planning for the SUICIDE SQUAD. Some of it is gut wrenching, if not stomach churning. In a good but "eww" way.

Somewhere in there I fit in time to see Kevin Kiniry, Executive Director of Creative Services, who gave me a walk-through of what DC Direct will be putting out in the coming months. Such cool stuff! Good thing the holidays are around the corner!

So yes, a time to give THANKS to all of YOU for supporting all our efforts. Who needs rest when there's soooo much excitement around here??!!

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Monday Afternoon (ET) Edition

Sunday’s NEW YORK POST covered this weekend’s New York Comic Con and teased upcoming convention announcements. “It’s a great thing it’s here in New York,” said DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras. “It’s very exciting for us.” The POST's coverage broke the very first DC Comics news of the Con: Andy Kubert will be illustrating a two part story in ACTION COMICS.

This morning, THE NEW YORK POST followed up with another exclusive announcement sure to get folks talking: Wonder Woman's new origin in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. “In this case, making her a god actually makes her more human, more relatable," said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee. Head over to THE NEW YORK POST’s website for their full coverage, including the first look at WONDER WOMAN #2, in stores next week.

Can't wait for more announcements at NYCC? There are plenty of previews to keep you occupied ‘til then. Witness:

USA TODAY has the exclusive preview of SUICIDE SQUAD #2 by Adam Glass, Federico Dallocchio and Andrei Bressan. “They're making decisions and doing things that have real costs to them, and those costs are people's lives: their own or other people's," Glass said of the Suicide Squad. "You're on a team with a group of people and you don't know if someone's gonna stick it in your back."

WIRED’s GEEKDAD has your first look at DEATHSTROKE #2 by Kyle Higgins, Joe Bennett and Art Thibert. “It won’t be very long until the heroes and villains alike know just who the scariest dude in the new DC universe truly is,” GEEKDAD wrote of Deathstroke.

COMIC BOOK RESOURCES previewed RESURRECTION MAN #2 by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning and Fernando Dagnino. They also interviewed BATMAN and SWAMP THING writer Scott Snyder as part of their ongoing BAT SIGNAL coverage. “What Gotham does is try to convince you that the things you consider your great strengths as a hero are your weaknesses, your weak spots,” Snyder said about BATMAN. “For Bruce that really is his confidence and his sense of knowledge and wisdom about the city, his confidence as its protector.” Be sure to read the full interview for your exclusive look at the cover to BATMAN #5.

Meanwhile, YAHOO!’s ASSOCIATED CONTENT interviewed writers Geoff Johns about AQUAMAN and Judd Winick about BATWING. “The goal of the first adventure takes place to establish how Aquaman is perceived on land and how he's perceived in the ocean,” Johns said of AQUAMAN’s premiere story arc. “Then we send him off on a journey to find out the biggest mystery of all: who sank Atlantis and why.”

And over at GEEKDAD, writer Corinna Lawson decided to do some research on Duane Swierczynski’s previous work before checking him out as the new writer for BIRDS OF PREY. “There’s no doubt that if non-stop, cool action sequences with fun characters are your thing, you need to read some Swierczynski stories.”
