FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: The end of an era

flashpoint-logo_white

Like the saying goes, everything you know will change in a flash.

It goes without saying that Geoff Johns is a talent to be reckoned with. For the past several years, Johns has been writing numerous FLASH titles – including the recently released THE FLASH OMNIBUS Vol. 1.

As he did with Hal Jordan and GREEN LANTERN, Johns has completely reinvigorated the character of Barry Allen and THE FLASH. Working with such incredible artists including Scott Kolins, Ethan Van Sciver, Angel Unzueta, Andy Kubert and rising stars like Francis Manipul, Johns has solidified The Flash’s place in the DC Universe. In fact, he’s placed Barry Allen front and center of this summer’s bestselling event, FLASHPOINT.

But like issue #12 was the final issue of THE FLASH by Johns, the final issue of FLASHPOINT will conclude Johns’ run on FLASH titles for the foreseeable future.

What happens post FLASHPOINT you ask?

As Johns says, “the first rule about FLASHPOINT is, don't talk about what comes after Flashpoint.”

So for now, we thank Geoff Johns for his run on THE FLASH and look forward to what he’s got planned next.

Stay tuned.

He's a hero who plugged in 24/7 and constantly in touch with technology and information. He's a product of the day, he really is the twenty-first century everyman."

Flashpoint Friday: Andy Kubert on the Canterbury Cricket

Designing a new costume and look for Wonder Woman or Aquaman is one thing, but an entirely new character like the Canterbury Cricket requires a few extra steps, even for a superstar artist like Andy Kubert.

canterburycricket

"I had no idea who or what this was...but he's in the story. Geoff described him as a humanoid insect along the lines of...a cricket. I researched crickets, bugs and arachnids which are all cut-throat nasty little creatures but crickets in general are really not that menacing looking. They have big, round eyes that are soulful (to me, anyway). I tried to give him a bit of an attitude with some heavy, pointed brows along with some rigid body armor. A couple of spiky things off of his long, skinny arms and elbows, legs and anywhere else I thought worked. All this stuff brings out the fighter in him. Also an ultra thin thorax type of waist and I thought always being in a crouched position would be a good character niche. Canterbury is also pretty short...maybe about 4 feet tall. Lots of spots on him as I picture his color scheme to being like a just pulled from the ocean lobster."

Flashpoint Friday: Andy Kubert on Aquaman

It's been a big week for Aquaman, with Geoff Johns announcing a new series continuing out of BRIGHTEST DAY. Here's Andy's take on Aquaman as you'll see him in FLASHPOINT.

fpaqfinmodelsheet

"What you're looking at is probably my very first drawing of Aquaman. For Flashpoint, he's military, tough and rugged with a scar on his face. You can see a lot of Sgt. Rock in his look...but that's probably in my genes! I gave him the buzzcut to help with his background and decided to keep the trident like the original one...why mess with a good thing? The fins on his boots in this sketch didn't make the final cut for the series. I like the take no prisoner attitude that he portrays since that's his character. Someday, I'd love to take a crack at a hard-hitting mini-series with him. There's so much visual that can be done with underwater techniques."

Flashpoint Friday: Andy Kubert Takes you behind the Scenes on Wonder Woman

flashpoint_fri_white

New FLASHPOINT details come to light in Newsarama's exclusive interview with Geoff Johns. Head on over to check out what Geoff has to say about the series, including the important role Batman will take in it.

But we won't leave you high and dry here on The Source. Last Friday we broke out some designs from FLASHPOINT by Jim Lee and Andy Kubert. Andy Kubert was so excited that he got into the act and wanted to provide more of his behind-the-scenes takes on additional characters. Take it away, Andy.

"Character designs are a unique thing...some just roll off the top of the pencil, and some take some time, which can turn into weeks, to figure out. With the three characters shown here, I tried to provide my insights without spoiling the Flashpoint storyline, which isn't an easy thing to do since their stories reflect their looks...but here it goes."

fp_ww_model_fin

"When Geoff and I were going over the characters and their backgrounds for the Flashpoint series, he told me that Wonder Woman would be wearing medieval armor and that it's an integral part of her background story (she leads an army!). I LOVE drawing armor. I immediately knew what she should look like and the attitude I wanted to give her was akin to the Ripley character Sigourney Weaver played in the Alien movies. And I wanted to put her in a helmet but not make the helmet too knight-ish but something that would be a bit more appropriate for her at the time Flashpoint was taking place. After the sketch was completed, I sent it to Geoff, Eddie and Adam Schlagman for approval and feedback. They loved it, but what they really liked was the helmet which now has a great back story that goes along with it (which they would clobber me for if I spoiled it here)."
