This Just Happened: Calling In Reinforcements

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read JUSTICE LEAGUE #16 yet and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoiler alerts ahead!)

From the creative team of writer Geoff Johns and artists Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, JUSTICE LEAGUE #16 serves as the next chapter of the monumental “Throne of Atlantis” crossover event that is currently spanning the pages of both JUSTICE LEAGUE and AQUAMAN.

In “Friends and Enemies,” the third chapter of “Throne of Atlantis,” Aquaman stands between his Justice League allies and his brother Orm, the King of Atlantis. As he tries to explain Atlantean law and defend the actions of his sibling, Batman launches an attack against the king. Aquaman has no choice but to fight his friends in order to protect both the Surface World and Atlantis.

But his actions are not enough to stop his brother’s final decision about the fate of the surface dwellers … the time has come for war!

Meanwhile, Cyborg attempts to gather all the knowledge he can on Atlanteans and how to stop them. In a desperate attempt to end the war, he rescues Dr. Shin, who was Aquaman’s ex-mentor and was once considered to be his greatest enemy! But can Dr. Shin reveal the secrets of Atlantis needed to defeat their forces once and for all?

Now that King Orm has finally released the forces of Atlantis, the remaining members of the Justice League are the Surface World’s only defense. Superman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman fight back as an unconscious Batman lies helpless. Their combined power is not enough to defeat Orm, who controls both the oceans and the storms, and as a result they become his prisoners.

With The Flash off battling Gorilla Grodd and Green Lantern presumed dead, Cyborg is now earth’s only protection against Atlantis. Or so it seems …

As Cyborg prepares for surgery in S.T.A.R. Labs to enhance his powers and help the imprisoned Leaguers, he broadcasts a distress call to save the world. But who will answer the call? Place your bets in the comments section and find out what happens when “Throne of Atlantis” continues in next week’s AQUAMAN #16.

Below, take a look at the final page from “Friends and Enemies” as Cyborg calls in a team of reinforcements to help the Justice League with their greatest threat yet! And don’t forget to pick up your copy of JUSTICE LEAGUE #16, in stores now!

12 "Holy Smoke!" Moments in Comics from 2012, Part 2

Over the past few weeks, “Best of” lists dominated the Interwebs—ranging from music to television to, of course, comic books. We even made a blog post linking a few of them that featured some of the great DC titles from THE NEW 52, Vertigo, and more.

Yesterday, we posted the first half of our own list celebrating the awesomeness of DC Comics in 2012 with the 12 "Holy Smoke!" Moments in Comics from 2012—six moments that had us screaming in excitement and surprise and that pumped us full of unbridled fan-thusiasm. It’s like regular enthusiasm covered with a healthy dose of fantasticness!

Today, we finish up our list with the final six "Holy Smoke!" Moments in Comics from 2012!

Aquaman’s Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

For anyone who doesn’t like venturing into the ocean, this moment is probably one of your biggest fears. You’re swimming along—an act of which the sole purpose is to make sure you don’t die—when all of a sudden you look behind you and you see rows of giant white gleaming fangs. This is exactly the situation a young Arthur Curry found himself in while diving into the deep in AQUAMAN #0. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, indeed.

Penguins Can't Fly
From the first image released of Alfred of BATMAN: EARTH ONE fans knew one thing for sure: this it not the Alfred we’re used to seeing. Needless to say, Alfred proved how much of a badass he was throughout the entirety of the Geoff Johns-penned OGN. But without a doubt, the ultimate "Holy smoke!" moment came during the book’s climax when Alfred blew the Penguin out the window with a shotgun. Jaw-dropping and insanely awesome.

Superman Goes Home
SUPERMAN #0 presented an interesting tale stunning illustrated by Kenneth Rocafort that explored the lives of Jor-El and Lara as the pair discovered not only that Lara was pregnant with the would-be Man of Steel, but that Krypton was doomed. However, the real twist came at the end, when we observed Superman on the planet during this time. How he got there and what it means is still yet to be seen, but he was wearing a costume similar to the one in the promo image for Andy Diggle and Tony Daniel's upcoming run on Action Comics.

Gods, Old and New
This was a bit of a tough one. With a single splash page, Brian Azzarello capped off his first year on Wonder Woman with a literal "BOOM," one that sent fans into a frenzy of delight and excitement. It seemed impossible for him to top it, but with the very next issue—WONDER WOMAN #0—he did it through sheer ingenuity. Not only did Azzarello present a wonderfully engaging flashback story beautifully illustrated by Cliff Chiang, but he also told it in a very clever way through Golden Age-style narration.

The One Who Knocks
We’ve been anxiously anticipating the Joker’s return to Gotham ever seen he disappeared at the end of DETECTIVE COMICS #1. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo sent chills down our collective spines in BATMAN #13 and made sure to keep the Joker in the shadows until the climatic final scene. The issue ended with the Joker revealed in all his gory glory... while attacking Alfred at Wayne Manor. It was a moment that immediately set the stage and raised the stakes for this Batman epic.

Trinity War
The DC COMICS—THE NEW 52 FREE COMIC BOOK DAY special answered some questions and asked one really, really big one (with a really, really big gatefold illustration): what is the Trinity War?

5.2 Reasons Aquaman is the Sexiest Super Hero Alive

You know that story about that person who was a geek when they were younger but then grew up to become super attractive and successful and popular? Kind of like Ryan Reynolds in "Just Friends" or Anne Hathaway's journey from the beginning of "The Princess Diaries" to becoming Catwoman at the end (that was the plot of that movie, right?).

It's a tale many of us have heard and are familiar with, and in the world of comics, we just saw fiction become reality when after years of being the butt of countless jokes, Aquaman has officially made the leap from most picked-on member of the Justice League to Sexiest Super Hero Alive—as voted by fans in MTV's Geek's recent reader poll!

The King of the Seven Seas has recently become a major force in the DC Universe. From his role in the pages of Justice League and his top-selling self-titled series to the upcoming "Throne of Atlantis" crossover event, Aquaman seems to be making a splash across the comic book world—which is why we're in complete support of his recent win and are breaking down the 5.2 Reasons Aquaman is the Sexiest Super Hero Alive!

1. He's Actually Pretty Badass

Aquaman has recently leveled up in butt-kicking—especially in the pages of his own series where he's taken on monstrous creatures from the depths, his villainous nemesis Black Manta, and soon enough, his own brother and the armies of Atlantis. However, his arguably most jaw-dropping moment came in the Justice League animated series episode "The Enemy Below," in which Orm tied Aquaman and his infant son over a vein of molten lava set to erupt. Freeing one hand and rapidly running out of time, Aquaman proceeds to CUT OFF HIS OTHER HAND in order to save his son. That, friends, is beyond hardcore. That is insanely badass. And if you think being tough doesn't make someone attractive, there's a literal legion of people in love with Batman and Wonder Woman that would like to have a word with you.

2. The Dates Would be Amazing

Some dudes might take you to a nice restaurant. Aquaman can take you to palatial restaurant deep under the sea in an area of the ocean people didn't even know exists. With his abilities, he can have the creatures of the sea put on the greatest show on Earth and make swimming with the dolphins something you do on the weekends for funzies.

3. Literally Everything He Does on "Batman: The Brave and the Bold"

Aquaman is OUTRAGEOUS-ly awesome on the Batman: The Brave and the Bold animated series. Humor can go a long way for a person, and although the comic incarnation of Aquaman can be a bit stoic, his animated counterpart is optimistic and happy-go-lucky to the point of hilarity and lovableness. He can even serenade you if you're feeling down as he did with Captain Atom and his "Rousing Song of Heroism."

4. Commitment

While Aquaman and Mera certainly have had their issues in the past **coughDeathofaPrincecough**, in The New 52 they're one of and arguably the biggest power couples in the DC Universe—an accomplishment greatly attributed to their commitment and love for one another. Together they've overcome ancestral and familial feuds and their differing views on the surface world, forming an amazing relationship and almost unbreakable bond. You can't help but respect and adore that kind of devotion.

5. He's Ripped

What is he, bench-pressing whales down there?

5.1 Seriously... Badass

5.2 Awesome Sideburns

Geoff Johns Talks “Throne Of Atlantis”

This winter, it’s not safe to go in the water.

Back in September, USA TODAY announced “Throne of Atlantis,” a crossover of epic proportions that will be spanning across the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE and AQUAMAN.

While next week's AQUAMAN #14 serves as a prelude to the event, “Throne of Atlantis” will officially kick off in JUSTICE LEAGUE #15, followed immediately by part two in AQUAMAN #15. With both issues hitting shelves on December 26, writer Geoff Johns teased what readers can expect from each series and “Throne of Atlantis” at large.

“It’s the Justice League going up against Atlantis,” Johns described to MTV GEEK. “The complexities to that, what Atlantis is, why they attack, what are their view points is really at the heart of the story. The politics and the laws of Atlantis are extremely different than ours and the reasons they attack are a set of circumstances that are a mystery at the center of the story. What triggers the war is a part of the mystery that unravels.”

Below, take a first look at Ivan Reis and Joe Prado’s interior art for JUSTICE LEAGUE #15. For more sneak peeks at this game-changing issue and to read more of what Johns had to say about “Throne of Atlantis,” check out the interviews that he conducted with MTV GEEK, IGN, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, NEWSARAMA, and COMIC VINE.
