Geoff Johns Talks “Throne Of Atlantis”

This winter, it’s not safe to go in the water.

Back in September, USA TODAY announced “Throne of Atlantis,” a crossover of epic proportions that will be spanning across the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE and AQUAMAN.

While next week's AQUAMAN #14 serves as a prelude to the event, “Throne of Atlantis” will officially kick off in JUSTICE LEAGUE #15, followed immediately by part two in AQUAMAN #15. With both issues hitting shelves on December 26, writer Geoff Johns teased what readers can expect from each series and “Throne of Atlantis” at large.

“It’s the Justice League going up against Atlantis,” Johns described to MTV GEEK. “The complexities to that, what Atlantis is, why they attack, what are their view points is really at the heart of the story. The politics and the laws of Atlantis are extremely different than ours and the reasons they attack are a set of circumstances that are a mystery at the center of the story. What triggers the war is a part of the mystery that unravels.”

Below, take a first look at Ivan Reis and Joe Prado’s interior art for JUSTICE LEAGUE #15. For more sneak peeks at this game-changing issue and to read more of what Johns had to say about “Throne of Atlantis,” check out the interviews that he conducted with MTV GEEK, IGN, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, NEWSARAMA, and COMIC VINE.

AQUAMAN, BATGIRL and SWEET TOOTH spotlighted in THE NEW YORK TIMES’ 2012 Graphic Novel Holiday Gift Guide

Last week, we told you about the various DCE titles making the best-of-the-year lists over at AMAZON.COM and BARNES AND NOBLE.

Today, we’re pleased to announce that THE NEW YORK TIMES has published their 2012 Holiday Gift Guide, and making the Graphic Novels list was AQUAMAN, VOL. 1: THE TRENCH and BATGIRL, VOL. 1: THE DARKEST REFLECTION.

“Two of the best series to emerge from DC Comics’ decision to reintroduce its heroes feature characters that embrace what came before and move forward,” wrote THE NEW YORK TIMES. “In AQUAMAN: THE TRENCH, the writer Geoff Johns is providing the building blocks to make the undersea hero an A-lister, and the artwork by Ivan Reis is magnificent. Over in BATGIRL: THE DARKEST REFLECTION, Gail Simone has returned Barbara Gordon to the cowl, after a miraculous end to her paralysis at the hands of the Joker — though the post-traumatic stress lingers.”

Also mentioned on the list was Jeff Lemire’s SWEET TOOTH, which THE NEW YORK TIMES described as “engrossing.” Click here to check out the full list and congratulations to all!

5.2 Reasons We’re Addicted to Our Super-Heroines

BATGIRL #14 hit comic shops this week, and reading that issue reminded us of exactly how strong Barbara Gordon is—both in the physical sense (we'd last about three seconds doing what she does, as that's probably how long it would take for us to fall over and curl into the fetal position) and in the sense of being just a fantastic, all-around-amazing example of a great, well-written female character.

In fact, we here at DC love our female characters. We love them in the totally respectable "we love to read them" way…and, uh…not in the weird "they're printed on our cuddle pillow" way. From the super-strong to the willfully powerful to even the psychotically malicious, we've got some of the most fun, creative and widely recognizable female characters in comics—heck, pop culture, even—and every week a number of them prove their awesomeness by taking center stage in some of the best titles currently on shelves.

Whether via comic books, toys or collectibles, it truly is a great time to be a fan of the DCU females. We’re certainly in that camp. You could even say we have a bit of a heroine addiction. It’s one addiction we’re very proud to have. So proud, in fact, that we’re listing off the 5.2 Reasons We’re Addicted to Our Super-Heroines!

1. Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman has been around since 1941 and she still looks great—especially with Cliff Chiang drawing her monthly in the pages of the critically acclaimed and brilliantly written Wonder Woman series by Brian Azzarello. Infusing Greek mythology with superheroics, Azzarello has crafted a Wonder Woman tale that encompasses everything that makes the character great and conveys it all through a tone vastly different from what's come before—one a little more mature and sophisticated while still balancing superhero adventure and fantasy. From her compassion and strength of character to her, you know, actual strength and general badassery, it's really no wonder we love Wonder Woman.

2. Bats and Cats and Birds (Oh My!)

When it comes to strong female characters, like with all things, Batman has it covered. From the feline fatale Catwoman to the aforementioned butt-kicking Batgirl to the all-female team the Birds of Prey (whose member Katana will soon be getting her own ongoing) to the Batwoman and even the Huntress (and by extension her BFF Power Girl), the female members of the Bat Family almost make us want to go to Gotham and commit a crime just so we can experience their awesomeness firsthand. We don't think we'd be able to handle the hospital bills, though.

3. Amaya, Princess of House Amethyst

Although a newer member of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52, Amaya of House Amethyst (appearing monthly in the pages of Sword of Sorcery) had us along for the ride from the get-go—simply by way of its cool creative team—but once the story’s action took us to Gemworld, things took a turn toward Awesome Town (about 28 miles outside of Crazy Town and a few stops away from Amazingville). Amaya’s hilarious sarcasm and "what am I even doing here" attitude brings a great level of fun and teenage cynicism to an already entertaining fantasy adventure.

4. Ame-Comi

We've been really big fans of the Ame-Comi line of statues for quite some time. From the extremely creative designs to the fun little details, they're a great addition to our shrine of nerdiness (also known as, you know, our office). But what's even more excellent is that their popularity spawned a new digital first series Ame-Comi Girls, which features characters inspired by the line. It's a really fun read scripted by the All-Star Western team of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, and each installment gets us excited about who is going to appear next and what twist to classic comic mythos and characters will occur.

5. Kickass Co-Stars

Whether we’re talking about the water-controlling warrior queen Mera from the pages of Aquaman, the alluring, if psychotic Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, the face-punching powerhouse Cassie Sandsmark in Teen Titans, or Horsewoman, Exoristos and Shining Knight from Demon Knights, you don't have to headline a title to steal the show.

5.1 The Awesomeness that is Supergirl

5.2 The Upcoming Return of Stargirl

Nothing like awesome comics and stunning statues to feed our little Heroine addiction. So what are your reasons for loving DC’s heroines? Let us know in the comments!

Paul Pelletier joins AQUAMAN as new regular artist

Aquaman’s getting a new look in February – courtesy of new artist Paul Pelletier.

Pelletier will team up with regular writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and colorist Rod Reis starting with February’s AQUAMAN #15 for the soon-to-be-epic “Throne of Atlantis” storyline, which crosses over between AQUAMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE – featuring the art of recent Atlantis resident Ivan Reis.

Pelletier boasts a stellar resume that includes stints on SUPERMAN, THE FLASH and more – but it’s been a while since he’s graced the pages of a DC title. We reached out to Paul to get a sense about what his plans are for the new gig. Take it away, Paul:

“I really want to push myself to do the best work I can for Aquaman. Over the years, Geoff Johns and I have had a couple of near misses, so it’s really cool to finally get the chance to work with him on this book. Ivan Reis has set a really high standard for the art on Aquaman, so I’ve got some big shoes to fill. I think Aquaman is going to be a lot of fun to work on, and I look forward to the challenge.”

We also reached out to Johns for some thoughts on Paul joining the art team.

"I've been a fan of Paul's for a long time now, his HULK work was phenomenal and I'm anxious for everyone to see his work on Aquaman as we delve into the second year. Paul's bringing a sense of regal power to Arthur and Mera,” Johns said. “As we head into THRONE OF ATLANTIS we'll see the Justice League and Aquaman's relationship evolve when the team comes face-to-face with a mystery that explodes into an all-out war between land and sea. We've held off on Atlantis for awhile now, because Atlantis is a place of mystery. They aren't simply people that live underwater. Their society is extremely different from ours. Part throwback and almost part alien. They aren't what you expect. Especially, Aquaman's brother - Ocean Master. They've barely spent any time in our world. They don't understand it. And they don't understand while their former King would ever abandon Atlantis for the chaotic, war-torn surface world we call home. Paul's jumping into the deep end (Sorry! Trust me, aquatic puns just happen when you're working on this book.) with THRONE OF ATLANTIS. Paul and Ivan Reis & Joe Prado tackle a story that goes from Smallville to Gotham to Atlantis to places yet explored in the sea, as the Justice League uncover a secret about Aquaman that no one, not even Arthur himself, knows."

Can’t wait? Here’s a handy Throne of Atlantis checklist, so you don’t miss an issue:

Prelude to Throne of Atlantis: AQUAMAN #14

Throne of Atlantis Chapter 2: AQUAMAN #15

5.2 Reasons to Look Forward to Year Two of The New 52

This month marked the one-year anniversary of DC COMICS—THE NEW 52. It's hard to believe a whole year has gone by, but times flies when you're having fun and reading some rad comics. Also when you're playing video games. You think, "One more level and then I'll go to sleep," and next thing you know it's 4 a.m. so you might as well play through till morning.

Excuse us for the ramble. We're a little sleepy...

Anyway, over the past twelve months comic readers saw the early days of the Man of Steel as he rose from champion of the people to the world's greatest super hero, the formation of the world's premiere super team, a Bat punch the heck out of some Owls, a war of the gods, the rise of the Rot and much, much more.

It's been an insanely fun journey so far—but it's only just begun.

As much as we loved Year One, we're incredibly excited for what comes next and so, this week, we're giving our fans 5.2 Reasons to Look Forward to Year Two of The New 52!

1. Comics' Power Couple: Superman and Wonder Woman
In the Justice League arc "The Villain's Journey," two of the world's most powerful heroes began a relationship—one that's sure to have lasting consequences and repercussions throughout the entirety of the DC Universe. We're rather excited to see their relationship unfold and the impact it will undoubtedly have on the rest of the team. And there's also the fun of coming up with couple names: Dian-El... Kaliana... Dialark... Then again, maybe we should leave that to the professionals.

2. The Rise of the Third Army
We spoke about the awesomeness of the Green Lantern Universe previously, but it absolutely bears repeating. Over the past year writer Geoff Johns built an amazing story featuring (among so much more) the almost buddy cop-like relationship between Hal Jordan and Sinestro, the introduction of a new Green Lantern of Earth, and the decent of the Guardians into near kitten-punching villainy. And as fantastic as that's been, we know it'll only keep getting better:

3. Earths of the Multiple Variety
Writer James Robinson and artist Nicola Scott launched Earth 2 as part of the New 52's "Second Wave" of titles and introduced readers to a whole new world of super heroes similar, yet vastly different from our own. From the very first issue it has been a thrill ride filled with unexpected twists and turns—from the sudden death of the Trinity to emergence of a new breed of heroes—and there's literally a whole world of possibilities still out there to explore!

4. Girl Power
Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Batwoman, Worlds' Finest, Birds Of Prey, Catwoman—there are a number of phenomenal books currently on shelves that are written and drawn by all-star creative talent and headlined by female heroes, and this month Amethyst joins those ranks with SWORD OF SORCERY #0. Not to mention brilliant characters like Sir Ystin and Exoristos in Demon Knights, Zatanna and Black Orchid in Justice League Dark and more! Plus, one of our favorite female characters, Stargirl, returns in January in the pages of JLA!

5. Aquaman's Revenge
For quite a while Aquaman held a pretty bad rep. Even just recently he was lampooned in the extremely hilarious Robot Chicken DC Comics Special. But when writer Geoff Johns relaunched Aquaman last year, he accomplished something incredible: he made Aquaman one of the best-selling comics out there, period. It's been a breakout year for our aquatic hero and earlier today USA TODAY broke the story of what's coming next: the "Throne of Atlantis" crossover with Justice League! We can't even begin to imagine the depths of awesomeness this new storyline will take us, but we are more than ready and willing to take the plunge (puns!).
