One Story, Two Mediums: A Look at the Arrow Comic

Millions of Oliver Queen fans tune in to watch the Hood come to life each Wednesday on the small screen, but if you’re only watching the show, you’re only getting half the story. Every Wednesday also marks the release of a brand new chapter of the digital first comic book.

Yeah, we know what many of you are thinking. The comic’s just another television adaptation full of inconsequential stories that don’t have any real impact on the series.

We understand where that sentiment comes from, but when it comes to Arrow, it couldn’t be more off target. The weekly comic book series was designed from the very start to go hand in hand with what’s happening onscreen each week. Unlike most television adaptations, the Arrow comic is actually written by the same team working on the show, ensuring that the universe stays unified and allowing for an unprecedented level of crossover between the show and the comic book.

“For the past 22 weeks, I think we've been giving Arrow fans some very compelling short stories that really add to the mythos of the series,” says Alex Antone, the editor of the Arrow comic book. “The writers—who are also staff writers on the show—have put a lot of effort into making sure that what you see in the comic is seamlessly integrated into what you see on the screen. Whether it’s Diggle talking about his time in Afghanistan [in Chapter 4] or Detective Lance's drinking problem [in Chapter 18]—this comic gives fans a unique opportunity to REALLY get inside the heads of the characters they watch every week on Arrow.”

Sometimes the comic book’s connection to the series is more background in nature—giving us an exciting look at Ollie in action as he fulfills the promise he made to his father. Other times, it’s very closely tied to the series, filling in details that are crucial to the onscreen story. Frequently, this involves giving the villains more time in the spotlight than a weekly hour-long program allows.

Next Wednesday’s Chapter 22, “Back from the Deadshot,” follows in this tradition with a story that bridges Deadshot’s first appearance in the series (way back in episode 3) with his return in last night’s episode, “Dead to Rights.”

“It's great to finally see Arrow's Deadshot make his first appearance in comic book form—and boy did the creative team nail it!” Antone expands. “Like we did with China White in Chapter 3, Huntress in Chapter 9 and 11, and Deathstroke in Chapter 19, we love using the digital comic to tell the ‘untold’ villain backstories.”

The excitement at bringing Deadshot to the Arrow comic is echoed by Chapter 22’s creative team.

“I think fans of the show are really going to appreciate seeing how Floyd Lawton gets his groove back after his defeat at the hands of the Arrow in ‘Lone Gunmen,’” says Ben Sokolowski, co-writer of the installment. “Deadshot is death incarnate...someone I think our fans will love to hate. He is becoming such a cornerstone to our mythos, especially with Diggle, that missing this chapter should get you on Oliver’s list.”

Another benefit to reading the comic is the thrill of seeing the residents of Starling City drawn in the distinct style of some truly amazing artists. Bringing the Deadshot tale to life is Sergio Sandoval, who’s become a regular to the world of Oliver Queen.

“This chapter has two things going for it. Deadshot and the super talented Sergio Sandoval,” says Wendy Mericle, the chapter’s other co-writer. “As a writer, I really couldn't ask for anything more to work with.”

Pencil art from "Back from the Deadshot" by Sergio Sandoval

“It's been really cool bringing back such a dark and evil character,” explains Sandoval. “Now I feel responsible for what happens to him! Deadshot needs his own spin-off!”

“Back from the Deadshot” is available digitally on March 6th, but what adventures can Arrow fans look forward to after that? Well, since the comic intertwines so closely with the television series, the folks involved with both projects are loath to reveal too much. However, Antone did offer up a few tantalizing hints…

“In addition to the usual Arrow butt-kicking, we've got a special Tommy and Laurel chapter, appearances by Detective McKenna Hall and Felicity Smoak, and a shocking flashback to the island featuring Deathstoke, Yao-Fei, and the comic debut of Shado as drawn by creator Mike Grell!”

So…where is Walter? Which other villains will be coming to Starling City before the season’s over? And what will happen between Oliver and Slade Wilson on the island?!

The team isn’t about to give up those green-hued goods, but with a steady stream of adventures on both the small screen and the comic page one thing’s for certain—Oliver Queen’s arrows won’t run out anytime soon.

Look for new digital first installments of the Arrow comic every Wednesday in the DC Comics Digital Store!

Arrow from Script to Screen with Geoff Johns

Deadshot. China White. Malcolm Merlyn. On their own, they’re dangerous and deadly. So what happens when all three converge in Starling City? Fans of Arrow will find out in tonight’s new episode, “Dead to Rights.” In addition to a generous helping edge-of-your-seat action, look for more flashbacks with Slade Wilson, some significant developments in Tommy Merlyn’s relationship with his father, and the first appearance of Laurel’s mother, Dinah Lance!

So what does it take to put together such a high-stakes episode? In the case of “Dead to Rights,” it starts by hiring comic book writer and
DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns to write the script. Below, Geoff shares two exclusive scenes from tonight’s episode as well as his thoughts on each. For the first scene, we’re giving you a look at a page from his script, and for the second, a clip of the scene as you’ll see it tonight.

Enjoy this journey from script to screen, Arrow style!

SCENE #1

Ah! Look at that -- revised pages on my birthday -- January 25th! So you can see the character, dialogue and action -- everything is in italics, which in Arrow-scriptese means that this is indeed a flashback on the island. And those two names should stand out to fans -- you've got Oliver Queen, pre-Green Arrow, and Slade Wilson, pre-Deathstroke. This relationship that's developed between the two on the island during the course of the last episodes has really sparked to life I think -- and is beginning to build the foundation of a Green Arrow/Deathstroke duo that we've never seen before.

Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kriesberg and Marc Guggenheim -- the producers and showrunners of Arrow -- obviously took a page from GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE by Andy Diggle and Jock when it comes to the island -- Oliver's not alone. And the team has taken that further by developing a complex world of characters, events and a timeline that takes us through the five years Oliver was trapped on the island.

SCENE #2

This scene from "Dead to Rights" cuts to the heart of the episode which explores Tommy's relationship with his father and how Oliver attempts to help Tommy deal with it. I think there have been a lot of questions from the diehards who know Merlyn from the comics about how Tommy and his father, Malcolm Merlyn, fit into the big picture. This episode will bring everything one step closer to the lore in the comics, particularly in a scene later on in the episode.

Speaking of the comics...what other characters would you like to see in the show?

Hope you enjoy it and thanks for watching!

Geoff

Q&A with Geoff Johns on this Week's All-New Episode of 'Arrow'

DC Entertainment’s very own Geoff Johns wrote this week’s all-new episode of ARROW and we had a chance to chat with him about what fans can expect. It sounds like an action-packed episode, take a look:

Q: What are you most excited for fans to see in this week's episode, “Dead to Rights”?

Geoff Johns:  I have to start by acknowledging and tipping my baseball hat to the director Glen Winter. Glen and I have worked together previously on episodes of Smallville including the Justice Society ep ABSOLUTE JUSTICE. Like comics, this is a creative collaboration between writer and visionary. And like the artistic greats I work with again-and-again — Ivan Reis & Joe Prado, Gary Frank, Doug Mahnke — Glen is someone that I connect with on a creative level. We both set out to do the very best we can together and I’m proud of the episodes of television we’ve made, especially this one. Add to that the producers, writing staff and cast of Arrow and I feel very privileged to be a part of it all. I’m glad the show has found such a great audience — it deserves it.

As to what I’m most excited for people to see? I’d have to say the developing relationship between Oliver and Tommy and ultimately the situation they find themselves in together. It reveals a lot about how much Oliver has grown since he was first stranded on that island and how painful Tommy’s life has been because of it — something we haven’t quite seen yet. Beyond that, it’s the return of Deadshot, China White and the introduction of Laurel’s mother Dinah Lance, who any self-respecting comic fan will know in the comics is the original Black Canary. The last line of the episode will have people exploring possibilities in their head that bring this show full circle.

Q: What kind of repercussions will Oliver face after the dust settles?

GJ: The dust settles from what exactly? Does someone die? You’ll have to watch.

Q: What was it like to team up again with your SMALLVILLE collaborator, director Glen Winter?

GJ: I’m glad you asked (even though I already half-answered above!). When Greg [Berlanti] called me about the episode and I spoke to Andrew [Kriesberg] about tackling this and teaming up with Glen again, I was unbelievably excited. Like I said, Glen is someone who deserves to be known by comic fans. He’s brought so many characters to the television screen — from his episodes of Smallville to his episodes now of Arrow. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in crime on this.

Q: For fans of the show who may not be as familiar with GREEN ARROW comics, what are the key storylines you recommend they read to get a feel for the character that inspired the TV show?

GJ: I’m glad you asked this too because I will tell anyone I can get to listen to pick up GREEN ARROW #17 which is the first issue by my good friend and amazing writer Jeff Lemire and artist Andrea Sorrentino. I know what these two have planned and it’s going to be a ride worth getting on board with — especially if you like the mysteries of the island Oliver Queen was stranded on. Both the TV show and now the series are exploring it in unique ways. I also can’t recommend enough GREEN ARROW: THE LONGBOW HUNTERS by Mike Grell, GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE by Andy Diggle (who subsequently had a character named after him) and Jock and GREEN ARROW: QUIVER and SOUNDS OF VIOLENCE by Kevin Smith and Phil Hester. All fantastic Green Arrow stories and seminal ones.

Q: Do you approach writing Comics and TV differently, from the way you block a scene to the dialogue to the characterization?

GJ: Yes. It’s great because you aren’t limited to page and panel count, but you do have a budget. You also have actors, sound and music. But the DNA of the characters, no matter the medium, remains the same. I love writing television because, like comics, it’s collaborative and it’s ongoing serial storytelling.

Q: Who is your favorite Green Arrow villain who has yet to appear on the TV show?

GJ: That would be Kevin Smith’s Onomatopoeia! Andrew is a big fan so I wouldn’t expect him before too long...

Q: Arrow hasn’t used many of Green Arrow’s trademark gimmick arrows.  Given his competition in Starling thus far, any recommendations for the small screen archer?

GJ: I think he’s doing just fine with the regular old razor tips.

5.2 Reasons it's a Great Time to be a Green Arrow Fan

If you love the color green and you love people that shoot other people with arrows—and the idea of those two things together gets you more excited than Wonder Woman at a sword sale—then slip on an extra pair of your excitement pants because right now, it’s all about Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow.

From his own television series to showing up as a playable character in the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us to multiple appearances in multiple comic book titles, Green Arrow seems to be hitting the mark all across the pop culture board. And as fellow fans of the Emerald Archer, we’re so ecstatic that we’re ready to slip on a green hoodie and run down the street firing sticky arrows onto the sides of buildings proclaiming our love of the character.

However, since the police department and general public frowns on that sort of behavior (a lesson we learned the hard way after repeated viewings of Lord of the Rings), we instead decided to present you with the 5.2 Reasons it’s a Great Time to be a Green Arrow Fan! Sadly, the existence of this column isn’t included as one of those reasons, even though we totally know you all love it so much.

1. Arrow Stikes Again

Yesterday marked the return of the popular CW television series Arrow. Besides the obvious thrill that comes with being able to see Willa Holland, Katie Cassidy and shirtless Stephen Amell again, the simple fact of the matter is that Arrow is an insanely awesome action series that has only gotten better and better with each passing episode and each introduction of a new DCU character. Firefly served as the antagonist in last night’s episode, and upcoming eps are set to include Count Vertigo, Roy Harper and more Deathstroke!

2. Jeff Lemire’s Green Arrow

We’re interested in just about everything that Lemire chooses to take on, but for Green Arrow fans, his taking the reins of the hero’s self-titled series beginning with February’s issue #17 is particularly exciting. Lemire has a knack for humanizing characters and injecting a great bit of humor into his stories, and after hearing him talk about the character in interviews, we trust him enough to put an apple on our head and let him fire away—blindfolded!

3. Bringing Arrow-y Justice to Injustice

The upcoming fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us by NetherRealm Studios looks to utilize the DC Comics stable of characters in face-punching, wall-smashing and other sure-to-leave-a-bruise ways of beating the ever-living crap out of each other. Green Arrow joins the likes of Superman, Batman, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Nightwing and many yet to be revealed characters for the game, which arrives in stores this April.

4. Statues, Figures, and Toys, Oh My

Green Arrow is also taking stage in the collector’s realm with a number of statues and figures from DC Collectibles—including a beautiful Arrow statue, a 3.75-inch figure based on his appearance in Injustice, and a DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 action figure! Put them all together with others heroes from across DC Collectibles and you can reenact your very own Crisis on Multiple Earths crossover! Cause, you know, what else do we do in our spare time?

5. Arrow Goes Online

Things usually come in threes—strikes, great film franchises, celebrity deaths—and Green Arrow gets his own triple treat by not only starring in the monthly Green Arrow and the upcoming Justice League of American, but also the weekly digital first series Arrow, which ties into the television series and explores the background of various characters such as Huntress, Firefly, Diggle and more.

5.1 Green Arrow Joins the Justice League of America

5.2 Oliver Queen Joins Facebook!

Be certain to like Green Arrow’s brand spanking new page on Facebook so you can stay in the know about the latest vigilante sightings (otherwise known as Green Arrow news). And don't forget to tune in Arrow on The CW, Wednesdays at 8/7c! Be sure to tell us why you love Green Arrow in the comments below! What current or upcoming Green Arrow project do you feel hits the bulls-eye?
