DC Week-In-Review: October 12th

Yes, we’re currently in New York providing our informative, innovative and downright inspirational Con Away From Con coverage. Yet, busy as we are and as amazing as this convention has been (is that guy over there wearing a Vibe costume?), we couldn’t possibly let a week like this pass us by without reviewing it. Not when we have a major publishing event, a major TV show debut and a major comic book convention all hit in the exact same week. Heck, we need to review this bad boy just so we know it wasn’t all a dream. So, let’s recap, shall we?

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

We started things off by offering up a few survival tips for those of you making the trip to Manhattan. First, we discussed the importance of planning ahead, then instructed all of you to take care when cosplaying, then reminded all of you to bring money. Because, no, we’re not going to spot you a twenty. (You still haven’t paid us back from SDCC.)

The super-villains also seem to be growing in numbers on our character page. Take a look at the latest bad guys to be added to the lineup:

Black Adam

Captain Cold

Bizarro

Catwoman

Just don’t let them see you looking…if you know what we mean.

This Wednesday, we celebrated Arrow Day. And when we celebrate something, we don’t hold back. Television premiere, free comic book, new digital first series…

Speaking of Arrow, it was also the target of this week’s 5.2 Reasons column. We’re firing off about everything we loved in the premiere and taking a shot at predicting what’s ahead. (Let’s hope it’s not more archery puns. By now, we’ve all gotten the point. Sorry...couldn’t resist!)

DC Collectibles revealed their latest statue, the All New Metallic Superman by Frank Miller, in a soaring new trailer.

We also introduced our latest Twitter giveaway. Two lucky winners this week will receive LEGO Batman prize packages, which include copies of the new LEGO Batman Visual Dictionary, as well as the best-selling LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes videogame!

But it was a Batman of an entirely different sort we found ourselves thinking about on Wednesday evening. Did you read BATMAN #13 yet? It marks the start of “Death of the Family,” but we gave you a glimpse of what you were in for earlier that day with this reveal of the Joker.

And what about that identity switch near the end of the issue? You know the one we’re talking about. You don’t? Then check out today’s This Just Happened. Though, you may want to read the issue first, unless you’re the sort of person who reads the end of a book first.

Once we hit the midway point of this week, it was just a steady stream of news and announcements here on DCComics.com, as New York Comic-Con kicked into gear.

First we announced that Ethan Van Sciver will be joining the Batman: The Dark Knight creative team starting with issue #16, and showed off a new cover that we’re absolutely mad for.

Then we gave you a nice look at some of the DC Collectibles that will be unveiled at New York Comic-Con. And we found ourselves wishing we had an antique plane we could paint some of those DC Bombshells on. (Think we could get one on Ebay?)

After that, we announced our new Action Comics creative team, while teasing Superman’s new Action Comics look. No, he’s not going back to the blue jeans.

We also announced our new writer for Demon Knights. We’re looking forward to discovering Mr. Venditti’s great gift for rhyme. (Yes, yes, some other time.)

As the week wore on, we let you all know about our latest batch of Annuals, which will be hitting shops in January, and giving us all the more incentive to hold to our resolution of visiting our local comic shop more regularly.

Not a bad batch of announcements, eh? But you know what would make it even better? Oh, how about a brand new Superman series written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Jim Lee?

Yeah, like we said, it’s been a monster of a week, and it’s not over yet. In fact, New York Comic-Con is just getting started, which means you can expect more news, announcements and just overall wicked cool stuff all weekend long.

Keep your eye on our Con Away From Con page during New York Comic-Con. It’ll continue to be updated with new panel recaps and videos, making sure you stay in the know about all the stuff worth knowing.

Have a great Comic-Con weekend, and we’ll see you again in seven!

5.2 Reasons to Look Forward to the First Season of Arrow

Last night, the first episode of Arrow premiered on The CW—and whether you’re a comic book fan or simply an interested newcomer, we hope you found it as entertaining as we did. However, if you happen to be a fan of comics and a fan of Green Arrow in specific, you likely found yourself jumping on top of your coffee table and shouting “Bulls-eye!” as soon as the episode ended. (Or maybe that was just us. Note to self: Ikea coffee tables are not built to support the weight of excited fanboys.)

In all seriousness (and with the obligatory bulls-eye joke out of the way), Arrow did a great job balancing its love for the fans with making sure not to alienate those unfamiliar with the character. And if that first episode set the standard for the tone for the show moving forward, there's a few reasons we're pretty excited for what's to come. In fact, we can think of at least 5.2 Reasons to Look Forward to the First Season of Arrow!

But before we get into them, a warning for those of you time-shifters who haven't yet watched the premiere...there be spoilers ahead! So go watch the episode and then come back and read this column.

1. References Galore

The first episode alone contained a number of references for sharp-eyed and eared comic book fans. The biggest three of course came from the appearance of a certain villainous mask, the name Tommy Merlyn, and Ollie's sister's nickname of Speedy—but more on those a little later. More obscure references came in the form of some other names comic fans might recognize: Ollie's bodyguard Diggle (most likely after writer Andy Diggle who penned the critically acclaimed GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE), Judge Grell (after writer and artist Mike Grell, arguably the most influential Green Arrow writer in comic history), and Adam Hunt's security head Drakon.

2. Action!

Those muscles actor Stephen Amell displayed during the training sequence are obviously not just for show, as he was bouncing off walls, jumping across roofs and arrowing the heck out of baddies. But what got us really ecstatic was the quick peek at Ollie's arsenal. We saw him use standard arrows regularly, but Oliver also put to use a grappling hook as well during last night's episode. Hopefully we'll get to see more inventive arrows as the show continues (no word yet on the boxing glove arrow).

3. Green Arrow/Black Canary

The ending of the episode confirmed something a few of us have been wondering for a while: is that or is that not Dinah Lance? Originally, actress Katie Cassidy was credited as Laurel Lance, but not we know for sure that her full name is in fact Dinah "Laurel" Lance. We also know she dated Oliver, he cheated on her (which also happened in the comics), and she enjoys "saving the world." Could Black Canary be in the show's future?

4. Upcoming Characters

Speaking of other comic book characters possibly arriving in the show's future, it's already been confirmed that both Deadshot and the Huntress will be appearing (which, in a pair of words, is totally awesome), but Tommy Merlyn and Ollie's sister Thea raised a few eyebrows. Merlyn is one of Green Arrow's most central villains, so we're left wondering if Ollie's best friend might be walking a dark path in the near future. Meanwhile Thea's nickname and her apparent drug addiction both point to Green Arrow's comic book sidekick. Incidentally, we loved the explanation of the nickname Speedy.

5. Deathstroke's Mask

When Oliver left the island at the beginning of the episode, the camera lingered briefly on a mask—one that comic fans recognized as belonging to the incredibly popular DC villain Deathstroke. This of course very much leaves us wondering HOLY CRAP WHAT HAPPENED ON THAT ISLAND?!

5.1 Arrow’s as Dangerous with his Hands as his Bow

5.2 Why, Hello there, Ladies

DC Comics Celebrates Arrow Day

Today marks a really awesome day for comic book fans. Yes, it's Wednesday, and therefore new comic book day, but along with that, DC Comics is also celebrating Arrow Day! Why today? Well, we're glad you theoretically asked! It's because there's some awesome Green Arrow greatness going on all day long!

Check out all the stuff happening:

Tonight marks the premiere of the highly anticipated CW television series Arrow, which stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen and Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance. Be sure to give the episode a watch and return here tomorrow for 5.2 Reasons, where we'll be breaking down the episode and fans can share their thoughts in the comments!

However, before tonight's premiere, we recommend heading over to your local comic shop where you can get a FREE copy of ARROW #1 SPECIAL EDITION, featuring an original 10-page story tying into the television series and a preview of GREEN ARROW #0! And for those who can't make it out to the store, worry not! Head over to the DC Digital Store where you can get the 10-page Arrow story also for FREE!

Speaking of the DC Digital Store, today also marks the release of the very first issue of our weekly digital first Arrow comic. Written by series writers and executive producers Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim, our new Arrow comic tells crucial in-continuity stories designed to fill in important details about the series’ characters and give fans an even deeper glimpse into the world of Oliver Queen. And with a first chapter drawn by legendary Green Arrow artist Mike Grell, it may be fair to call this comic a can’t-miss.

Finally, today’s also the last full day of our Green Arrow 101 Sale, which has over 100 Green Arrow comic book issues featuring the eagle-eyed archer—all for only 99 cents each! The sale ends tomorrow, so act while you can.

With all the options available to you today, Oliver Queen fans don’t need to be world-class archers to hit the bullseye. Don’t miss out!

Geoff Johns Writing Episode of CW's ARROW

DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns has been involved with the production of this fall's new CW show ARROW from the beginning, and now he's taking things to the next level by writing an entire episode with Executive Producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg.  Keep an eye out for episode 107 this fall titled "Muse on Fire" to see what Johns has up his sleeve.

"I'm thrilled to be writing this episode of ARROW, and while I can't give too much away, I think comic fans are going to like what we have in store for them – keep an eye out for the Huntress," said Johns.

Tune into ARROW on The CW Wednesdays this fall at 8/7c starting with the premiere on October 10.

New Digital Comic Based on CW's ARROW to Launch on Oct. 10

As comic fans eagerly await the October 10 premiere of the new CW show ARROW, we have news that will make the countdown even more exciting. DC Entertainment is producing a new, weekly digital comic book based on the show that will also debut on October 10.

The new digital comic series will take fans deeper into the world of ARROW, delving further into character back stories and often filling in the gaps between episodes. With ARROW Executive Producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg on writing duties – this comic is a must-have for fans of the show. On the art side, legendary GREEN ARROW comic book writer and artist Mike Grell is on board to draw the first two covers, with rising stars Sergio Sandoval and Jorge Jimenez tapped to do artwork in subsequent chapters.

“This is incredibly exciting for us.  For one thing, Andrew and I are not just television and comic book writers -- we're comic book fans.  We're also extremely excited to be doing something that I don't think has ever been done before:  a weekly comic which ties directly into a TV series with stories that fill in important gaps in the television narrative and written by the show's writing staff,” said Guggenheim.

The first digital chapter of ARROW will go on sale for $.99 on October 10, followed by new weekly chapters each Wednesday.  The comic series will also be collected in print with three digital chapters on sale in one print issue for $3.99 starting on November 28.
