Everyone’s Talkin’ About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Friday Afternoon (ET) Edition

It's almost the weekend, but that's not stopping people from writing and talking about DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

CNN’s GEEK OUT interviewed ACTION COMICS writer Grant Morrison. “Superman is very much a physical character,” responded Morrison when asked about the differences between writing Superman and Batman. “The confrontations are very direct - he fights giant robots and monsters and things, so the kind of symbolism the two of them work on are very different.”

COMIC BOOK RESOURCES has your exclusive first look at next week’s BATGIRL #3 by Gail Simone, Ardian Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes.

Meanwhile, the ASSOCIATED PRESS quotes John Rood, DC Entertainment's Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Business Development for a story about the commercial success of DC Comics-The NEW 52. "We like what 'DC Comics — The New 52' is doing to bring new attention to comics and to comic shop retailers. And we like hearing that other publishers are being helped too. . . The market-share battle is not the one we care to win... We are battling to deliver great stories and characters, and to support comic shops so that they're the ones who win every month."

Dick Grayson looks into the ‘Black Mirror’ in DETECTIVE COMICS #871

Somehow, tools, evidence and weapons relating to some of Batman’s deadliest foes are ending up in the wrong hands – and people are dying because of it.

Newly ensconced Batman Dick Grayson must piece together the pieces of the mystery, which point to a deadly new adversary. But will he be able to bring down his new enemy before more die?

Writer Scott Snyder, the co-creator of THE NEW YORK TIMES-bestselling AMERICAN VAMPIRE (which just got a very nice writeup in the ASSOCIATED PRESS, featuring an interview with the legendary Stephen King) joins forces with artist and LOSERS co-creator Jock to kick off “Black Mirror,” the creative team’s first arc on DETECTIVE COMICS – and it’s as on target as you can imagine. This issue puts the emphasis on the “detective” part of the book’s title, putting Grayson a few steps behind a new adversary while lives hang in the balance. For more hints, swing by USA TODAY, which featured a first look at the series along with some comments from Snyder.

But that’s not all. The issue also features Snyder and artist Francesco Francavilla’s COMMISSIONER GORDON co-feature, which brings a haunting ghost from Gordon’s past screaming into his present. Creepy, chilling and must-read stuff.

A few links of not for Thursday: BATMAN AND ROBIN #16’s big reveal

If you’ve been following us on Twitter or Facebook, you’ve probably noticed that there’s been a huge outpouring of press in reaction to the shocking conclusion of BATMAN AND ROBIN #16. It all started early yesterday, as THE ASSOCIATED PRESS broke the news that (stop reading now if you haven’t picked up the issue) Bruce Wayne had been secretly funding Batman for years, and would expand his funding and launch BATMAN INCORPORATED in an interview with the man behind it all, writer Grant Morrison.

With that, we were off to the races. DC Comics Editor in Chief Bob Harras did a number of interviews, including chats with USA TODAY, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, CNN’s MARQUEE BLOG, TIME TECHLAND, AOL COMICS ALLIANCE, THE L.A. TIMES' HERO COMPLEX, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, NEWSARAMA and IO9.

And in case you missed it, WIRED’s Scott Thill had an epic, engaging and all-around interesting interview with Morrison, which is a must-read for fans of the man’s work. Also, the issue's been getting raves -- with glowing reviews at POP MATTERS and IGN to kick things off.

Another day, another dose of major, mainstream press attention for writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis’ SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE original graphic novel. Have you snagged your copy? I suggest you get to it, post haste.

Why the rush? Well…

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS announced that the OGN has sold out of inventory, meaning people are really, really excited by this take on the Man of Steel. In addition to the AP, the last 24 hours saw in-print and online coverage at USA TODAY, a sterling review by Bryan Young at THE HUFFINGTON POST and another review at NPR’s MONKEY SEE blog.

So, yeah. Fairly quiet week here.
