Atom

Big things come in small packages. Just an age-old cliché, right? Actually, it turns out there’s quite a bit of truth to it…if you’re talking about the Atom.

A gifted physicist, Dr. Ray Palmer put his genius mind to good use by laboring tirelessly to help create a better world. His hard work led to advancements in matter compression and the discovery of white-dwarf star remnants on Earth. Creating a specialized, size-changing belt that houses a lens filled with star matter, Ray has the ability to shrink his size down to subatomic levels. This unique power inspired his heroic moniker and allows the Atom to handle things most other heroes can’t even see: viruses, parasites, nuclear reactions and beyond. Using phone, fiber-optic cables and even the bloodstreams of other heroes and villains, Ray can get wherever he needs to be at incredible speeds.

The Atom is constantly learning and has become a leading mind in some of the most progressive areas of scientific thought and inquiry. This thirst for knowledge has made him the go-to hero when facing problems rooted in science, but it can sometimes cloud his judgment when the enemy is powered by the supernatural or motivated by something that seems irrational. Ray can tackle the world’s biggest quandaries and tiniest threats, but there’s one fight he always struggles with: accepting that some things in life just can’t be explained.

FIRST LOOK: Brandon Routh as the Atom

When Arrow announced that Brandon Routh would be appearing as Dr. Ray Palmer on the show’s third season, fans knew the announcement was huge.

Or rather small. Very, very small.

That’s because Ray Palmer is the civilian identity of the Atom in the DC Universe, and over the show’s first eleven Season 3 episodes, we’ve seen Palmer inch ever closer to the discovery that will turn him into the microscopic hero.

Justice League Unlimited (2004 - 2006)

In a world of extraterrestrial invasions, powerful sorcerers, vast shadowy conspiracies and ancient gods, the galaxy's most powerful superheroes return to battle the allied villains and criminal plots that endanger the universe. Two years ago, the world's greatest heroes banded together as the Justice League and dedicated themselves to battling threats too great for any single hero to handle. Since then, they've saved the world countless times from unimaginable dangers. But the price has been high. With their ranks diminished after fighting off an alien invasion and with new dangers arising at an ever-increasing pace, the remaining Justice League crime fighters realize that protecting the entire world is going to take more technology and manpower than they have at hand. A lot more. These heroes come home to roost in their high-tech Watchtower, sporting space-based energy weapons and a powered-up fleet of Javelin spaceships. The team members tap innovative matter-transporters that zip them from one location to another in a flash. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern continue to lead the universe's most powerful superheroes, including such well-known defenders as Supergirl, Green Arrow and the Atom as well as Booster Gold, Hawk & Dove, Elongated Man, Mister Miracle, Big Barda and Zatanna. These fearless fighters and many others are the Justice League Unlimited.

Some BLACKEST NIGHT news on a Monday night

bn-one-shots As some of you know, the Baltimore Retailer Summit is in full swing. We've got some news breaking during our presentation, so what better place to unveil it than here, on The Source?

It's time to CRY FOR JUSTICE

Batman and Martian Manhunter are gone. But these aren't the first heroes to fall prey to the villains populating the DCU. And, not surprisingly, some heroes are tired of reacting, and instead want to take the battle to the bad guys themselves. The new team of Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Supergirl, Atom, Shazam, Congorilla and Starman unite in JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE, a six-issue mini-series from writer James Robinson and rising star artist Mauro Cascioli.
