New on Google+: Preview The Flash #3!

Yesterday we announced the launch of our DC Comics Google+ Page, something we were among the first companies to get a chance to create. We kicked that off with a preview of Batman #3 from writer Scott Snyder and today we've got even more good stuff for you there.

The Flash has realized that his Speed Force-fueled powers didn't come with an instruction manual. There's no reference guide he can turn to and learn that, hey, he can create tiny vortexes with his arms that can keep someone - or something - aloft. So his life is a lot of trial and error. Now he's learned that not only does the Speed Force allow his body to move super-fast, it can also allow his mind to move faster than a normal persons. But it's still a learning-as-he-goes situation that's taking some getting used to.

On the DC Comics Google+ Page today we have a preview of The Flash #3 from Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato that show Barry Allen still getting a grip on just what his new fast-thinking abilities can do while also continuing to deal with situations that require his physical powers. Can he get the his brain and his body both moving at the same speed?

You'll find The Flash #3 on sale Wednesday 11/23 both digitally and in print. Visit Read.DCComics.com for more information and stay tuned to our DC Comics Google+ Page for more as we continue to experiment with this exciting new platform.

“OMG…WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO FLASH IN THE NEW 52?”

Let me say this up front: FLASH is the DC series I’ve always loved the most. I own more Flash comics than I can count, and have adored the character since I was a 4-year-old living in a tiny Queens apartment. So it’s an understatement to say that editing this series in DC Comics – The New 52 is a true privilege.

And what a series it is! The super-talented writer-artist team of Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato has me running giddy on a cosmic treadmill! FLASH remains a very fun series to read — it’s got drama, intrigue, tragedy, humor…everything you want out of your entertainment!

But it also has something else. It’s something we let slip at Comic Con, but many of you might not have heard it, so brace yourself for this SPOILER WARNING:

The Flash is a single man. He’s a bachelor who has never been married.

I’ll give you all a few seconds to take that in and digest it.

Yes, folks — in the post-FLASHPOINT world, Barry Allen has not only never dated Iris West, but he’s dating someone else entirely in issue #1! And that someone is…his longtime coworker Patty Spivot!

If that upsets you, sorry about that. But I make no apologies for opening up a traditional storytelling avenue with our hero’s romantic life, something that’s been shut closed for a very long time now. This is no indictment of marriage. I’m a married man and wouldn’t trade it for anything. But in the realm of fiction, I feel strongly that this change to Barry opens up fresh, new creative directions and exciting new storylines.

But don’t fret—Iris West remains an active supporting cast member. And a wonderfully entertaining one, at that! Who else could possibly hit up Barry for anonymous crime-story tips to fill her blog on the Central City Citizen’s website? No one but the go-getter Iris could consume so much caffeine and live to tell about it.

And who knows, maybe someday we’ll have the opportunity to see why Barry and Iris fell in love in the first place. Or maybe not! Stay tuned — I can assure you Barry’s love life will never, ever be boring!

The life and times of Barry Allen are as familiar today as they were yesterday, but his love life is one of the things that have been freshened up for 2011. New fans will fall in love with the fastest man alive for the first time, and I guarantee that longtime Flash fans will not only still recognize the world of Barry Allen, they will be hooked like they were the first time.

I should know, because one of those longtime fans is me!

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: Must Be A Speedster Thing

flashpoint-logo_whiteRemember when Barry Allen woke up in an unfamiliar world in FLASHPOINT #1? Turns out he’s not the only speedster with that problem. In KID FLASH LOST, Bart Allen finds himself noticing considerable changes in the people and places he thought he knew. He enlists Hot Pursuit for help …. but is the Hot Pursuit coming to his aid the same one he remembers?

"KID FLASH LOST is a FLASHPOINT mystery, as Bart and the mysterious character known as Hot Pursuit try to unravel what has happened when the world they wake up in is not their own. Bart will deal with many of the character threads set up in Geoff Johns' "Road to Flashpoint" storyarc even as he confronts the greatest danger the 31st century has ever seen,” writer Sterling Gates told us.

Like the saying goes, everything you know will change in a flash.

It goes without saying that Geoff Johns is a talent to be reckoned with. For the past several years, Johns has been writing numerous FLASH titles – including the recently released THE FLASH OMNIBUS Vol. 1.

As he did with Hal Jordan and GREEN LANTERN, Johns has completely reinvigorated the character of Barry Allen and THE FLASH. Working with such incredible artists including Scott Kolins, Ethan Van Sciver, Angel Unzueta, Andy Kubert and rising stars like Francis Manipul, Johns has solidified The Flash’s place in the DC Universe. In fact, he’s placed Barry Allen front and center of this summer’s bestselling event, FLASHPOINT.

But like issue #12 was the final issue of THE FLASH by Johns, the final issue of FLASHPOINT will conclude Johns’ run on FLASH titles for the foreseeable future.

What happens post FLASHPOINT you ask?

As Johns says, “the first rule about FLASHPOINT is, don't talk about what comes after Flashpoint.”

So for now, we thank Geoff Johns for his run on THE FLASH and look forward to what he’s got planned next.

Stay tuned.

The final issue of THE FLASH is here

Barry Allen is having a tough time balancing his life. Not only is he faced with his job as a CSI, his family, and being a super hero, but he's struggling with a past that still haunts him.

In the conclusion of THE FLASH (on sale tomorrow), written by superstar writer Geoff Johns and drawn by the amazing artists Scott Kolins and Francis Manapul, emotions are running high and Barry needs to make a change...fast.

THE ROAD TO FLASHPOINT storyline ends here and then everything you know will change in a Flash.

SOURCE SPECIAL: GEOFF JOHNS TALKS THE FLASH, PART 2

Yesterday, we talked to THE FLASH writer Geoff Johns about Barry Allen, his Rogues and what it means to be a hero. But there’s more to cover, folks, so why stop there?

We’re happy to present the conclusion of our two-part chat with Geoff, where we talk about his amazing artistic collaborator Francis Manapul, what’s coming with the new series and the one page that’ll keep you guessing.

Alex Segura: Let's talk about Francis Manapul for a second. He brings a very neo-classical look to THE FLASH and his previous work in ADVENTURE. He's got the goods -- excellent storytelling, stunning splash pages/covers and a style that is both fresh but also rooted in the classics. What makes him the perfect guy to relaunch THE FLASH with? What's it like working with him?

Geoff Johns: Francis Manapul brings a renewed energy to the world of the Flash and in particular Barry Allen. We're really looking at this book as taking place firmly in the present (unless the cosmic treadmill is involved) and moving the Flash, his supporting cast and the Rogues into the future. Francis is key to that. His work really speaks for itself, but the energy he's given the Flash -- and you can see it in just a few of the sample pages -- is undeniable. His Barry Allen is earnest, smart, strong and methodical. His Flash never stops. I'm honored to be teamed up with such a fantastic artist on the first ever Barry Allen Flash #1 issue. Couldn't ask for more.

AS: Now, it's obvious you're no stranger to the world of The Flash, with your previous, lengthy run on the book, which dealt mainly with Wally West and his role. In many ways, you created very strong connections and parallels between Wally and Barry: the Rogues, the return of Wally's secret identity and the roots of the Flash stretching backward and forward in time. How are the other characters who've been called Flash going to fit into the new book? Are we going to see them crop up later, with the first few arcs cementing Barry in his new/old role?

GJ: You'll have to be patient to see the other heroes and villains who tap into the Speed Force show up. There's a story, a big one, but we won't get there right away. I love long term planning and this is a book I have a story to tell. More will be clear in issue #1.

AS: Going back a bit to Barry's history -- what are the stories that stand out for you as the best examples of what you're trying to do with this chapter of THE FLASH? Did any in particular provide some inspiration?

GJ: I don't want to select a single story. It's more the inception of the character and the creation of a new age of heroes. Barry Allen, for me, represents that optimism and forward thinking that reignited superheroes in the first place. Our approach to the book isn't what a lot of people will expect, especially with that story title of the first arc - CASE ONE: THE DASTARDLY DEATH OF THE ROGUES. There are a lot of mysteries here and a lot of crimes to solve and crimes to stop. There's an exploration of speed and what it does to us today, how we can succumb to it or be seduced by it. What do we have time for in our "busy" lives? Are we really too busy we have to send text messages instead of calling someone? Or is it easier to keep in touch with our loved ones that way? Do we need more hours in the day or do we need to stop overfilling up the hours we have? What is speed? What is time? What does it all mean to us in our lives day-to-day and year-to-year?

FLSv2_6pp_prev.qxp

AS: In closing, I'd like to tap into your inner fan a bit. How exciting is it to be bringing back such a beloved character to the DCU? Are there any moments that you've written or seen on the finished page that have made you stop for a second and smile? What can readers expect from THE FLASH book that'll hook them?

GJ: The last page of issue #1. That oughta do it. :)
