Previews of Wednesday’s DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Releases

Here’s a round up of the exclusive previews from this week’s DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 releases, on sale Wednesday.

USA TODAY has your first look at BATMAN #6 and interviewed series writer Scott Snyder and series artist Greg Capullo. “The fun of the court is that they are faceless and that Bruce is frustrated by the fact that he can't figure out who they are, and that even when he was a boy he couldn't put a finger on what they've done to affect his destiny. That is going to play a very big part coming up,” Snyder said of the Court of Owls and the upcoming “Night of the Owls” crossover event that will be spanning all the Bat-books. “This second half of the story really is going to explore who is behind the mask — both in a way where you will find out some of the people who are Owls, but more importantly you'll find out who they've been historically to Gotham and how they've shaped the Bat-mythology in ways that I think will be really shocking to people.”

COMIC BOOK RESOURCES has a sneak peek at NIGHTWING #6, NEWSARAMA unleashed their claws by revealing four pages from CATWOMAN #6, COMICVINE previewed BLUE BEETLE #6 and IFANBOY took you to the 31st century with their preview of LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #6.

Meanwhile, MAXIM debuted a sequence from SUPERGIRL #6, GAWKER’s IO9 ran an exclusive preview of WONDER WOMAN #6 and IGN premiered the first four pages of BIRDS OF PREY #6. BATMAN #5 GOES BACK TO PRESS

BATMAN #5 has sold out, and will be going back to press for its second printing. From the critically acclaimed, fan-favorite creative team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, the issue pits Batman against himself; trapped in a deadly maze deep beneath Gotham City, he must fight just to stay sane in the Owls’ nightmarish labyrinth. But turnabout is fair play, and this is just prelude to the Bat-tle royale that’s coming in the “Night of the Owls” crossover event this May.

The second printing of BATMAN #5 will be on sale in comic book stores on March 7, 2012.

BATMAN ANNUAL #1 INTRODUCES MR. FREEZE INTO DC COMICS: THE NEW 52

Coming this May, BATMAN ANNUAL #1 features the hotly anticipated introduction of Mr. Freeze into DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. But what is the icy villain’s role in the machinations of the sinister Court of Owls and their plot to control Gotham City? Is he friend or foe, ally or enemy?

“Mr. Freeze is a character full of pathos and tragedy and at the end of the day, he's one of Batman's deadliest,” said writer Scott Snyder. “So as you can imagine, I'm very excited to be able to do a story that establishes him in the new DCU, with rising stars James Tynion IV and Jay Fabok. This will be tale that really digs into Freeze's psyche, explaining his connection to the Court of Owls in the present, and exploring dark secrets about his past. Really thrilled to see what you guys think!”

Critically acclaimed for his work on the ongoing BATMAN series, Snyder will be joined by artist Jay Fabok for the oversized issue, with James Tynion IV co-writing.

Expanding the story of the “Night of the Owls” and introducing one of Batman’s classic rogues, BATMAN ANNUAL #1 is not to be missed. Check out Fabok’s cover right here on THE SOURCE.

BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM HITS BOOKSTORES TOMORROW

Released in comic book stores last week, BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM will be in bookstores everywhere beginning tomorrow. Collected in its entirety for the first time, the critically acclaimed miniseries is written by fan-favorite Gotham scribes Scott Snyder (BATMAN) and Kyle Higgins (NIGHTWING).

Together, they explore the shadowed history of Gotham City, setting the stage and laying the foundation for the action that is still to come in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. Uncovering secrets of Gotham’s mysterious and violent past, BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM provides insights into the upcoming “Night of the Owls” crossover, establishing the city itself as one of the major players in the ongoing adventures of the Bat-family.

“GATES OF GOTHAM is the culmination of a lot of firsts – my first miniseries at DC Comics, my first time collaborating with the amazing Scott Snyder, the first in depth look at the history of Gotham City, and most important of all, the first chapter in one of the biggest Bat stories ever – THE CITY OF OWLS,” said Higgins. “With the relaunch of the DC Universe on the horizon, Scott, Mike Marts, Ryan Parrott, Trevor McCarthy, Guy Major and I set out to uncover the untold secrets of comics' most famous city while also laying the groundwork for Batman's greatest challenge yet.  For anyone enjoying our current runs on BATMAN and NIGHTWING, I can't recommend GATES OF GOTHAM enough – this is where it all began!”

EVERYBODY’S TALKIN’ ABOUT BATMAN

Friendless and alone, the Dark Knight is currently under attack by the Court of Owls in BATMAN – but the “Night of the Owls” is coming, and Batman will turn the tables on the sinister secret society. Anticipating the epic Bat-family crossover event coming in May, Scott Snyder spoke about the story to come.

Head over to COMIC VINE for an exclusive first look at the cover to BATMAN #9 – a thematic mirror of the distinctive cover to BATMAN #4.

And then check out an exclusive page from BATMAN #6 at IFANBOY.

"I don't want to give away too much, for a long time now, we've seen Batman struggling to disprove the Court of Owls, Batman on the defensive,” Snyder told THE SOURCE. “But with ISSUE 6, that starts to turn - there's no denying the Court anymore, and Batman is going to come at them with a vengeance. Expect the Court to fight back though, in a big way... It's all going to escalate into a war for Gotham City, with some big and game-changing surprises coming up along the way very, very soon. And again, thanks so much to all of you from team Batman. Ok, to Gotham!"

BATMAN #4 Goes Back To Press

BATMAN #4 has sold out, and will be going back to press for its second printing. Deepening the mystery of the Court of Owls, the issue looks at Bruce Wayne’s own past with the sinister secret society – but the more he explores the shadows, the darker they become. If you missed the first run of this issue, now’s your chance to catch up. It’ all prelude to the “Night of the Owls” crossover event coming in May.

The second printing will be on sale in comic book stores on February 22, 2012.
