AMERICAN VAMPIRE VOL. 5 Debuts at #2 on THE NEW YORK TIMES’ Graphic Books Best Seller List

On Friday, THE NEW YORK TIMES published their Graphic Books Best Sellers Lists, and debuting at #2 on the Hardcover list was AMERICAN VAMPIRE, VOL. 5 from writer Scot Snyder and artists Rafael Albuquerque and Dustin Nguyn!

Scott Snyder is one of the comic book industries most talented breakthrough writers. With the launch of AMERICAN VAMPIRE written and created by Scott Snyder and co-written by none other than Stephen King, VOLUME 1 quickly became a New York Times bestseller. Snyder has reinvigorated vampire lore, not only by making vampires scary again, but by having his main character Skinner Sweet, become the first American vampire born of the American West. Through the lens of this eternal character, he explores what is both horrific and wondrous throughout the history of the United States.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE, VOL. 5 follows Skinner Sweet, Pearl and company as they return to Hollywood in the ‘50s during the Red Scare. Elsewhere, retired vampire hunter Felicia Book gets called back into action to kill the most powerful vampire of all time. Brought to you by critically acclaimed writer Scott Snyder (BATMAN and SWAMP THING), this hardcover volume collects issues #28-34 of the monthly series illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque (BLUE BEETLE), and the 5-issue miniseries AMERICAN VAMPIRE: LORD OF NIGHTMARES, drawn by Dustin Nguyen (DETECTIVE COMICS and BATMAN: LI’L GOTHAM).

5.2 Reasons We're Excited for Injustice

We’ve all be there. Discussing our favorite super heroes with our friend (let’s randomly say, oh, Jimmy) and suddenly the conversation turns to who would win a fight. Not between us and Jimmy (obviously, that’d be us—what now, Jimmy?!) but in match-ups between Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman and SHAZAM!, the Flash and Green Lantern. The debate rages, and even though Jimmy is clearly wrong because he’s a big, stupid, jerkface, you never come to an agreement.

Well, things are about to change because with the release of the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game on April 16, you can finally take the debate to the ring by pitting your favorite super heroes and super villains against one another in a scenery-smashing, face-punching, level-exploding brawl across the DC Universe.

The early videos got us buzzing and the more we’ve seen—between online reveals and convention demos—the more that buzzing became an all-out electrocution of anticipation. With the game’s release less than a week away, we’re breaking down the 5.2 Reasons We’re Excited for Injustice!

1. The Story

Yes, we realize Injustice is a fighting game and generally speaking, who needs a story when Catwoman is dropkicking Solomon Grundy in the face—but we’re actually really interested to play through the story mode and explore a world where Superman and other members of the World’s Greatest have taken over, turning the Earth into a totalitarian regime. And have Catwoman dropkick Solomon Grundy in the face while doing so.

2. The Battles

There’s just no getting around it. We’re really excited to pit these characters against one another, to finally settle these debates once and for all... at least until the next round. And for those who have been joining us each week for Injustice Battle Arena—which culminates on Monday night in a final fight between Batman and Superman—and demanding rematches, well, now you can have it! There’s definitely going to be a lot of “best two out of three,” “best six out of ten,” “okay, okay, best eleven out of twenty.”

3. The Cast

Sure we’ve got the basics we all wanted—Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Cyborg—but some revelations about the extended cast got us incredibly excited: Nightwing, Raven, Ares, SHAZAM! AND Black Adam, Hawkgirl, Sinestro and more. Not to mention who knows who else they’ll bring out for DLC.

4. Interactive Environment

Each level comes equipped with a multitude of environmental weapons at your disposal with unique usages depending on your particular character build. Powerhouses like Doomsday and Bane can pick up cars and bash them into their opponent’s heads while acrobats like Nightwing and Deathstroke can utilize overhead items to escape from a tricky situation. Not to mention being able to knock your opponents through buildings or floors of the Batcave into a whole new section of the level.

5. Multiple Game Modes

We’ve mentioned the Story Mode and of course there’s your standard versus mode, but Injustice also includes Battle Mode, an online “King of the Hill” mode, and S.T.A.R. Labs, which include 240 character-specific challenges.

5.1 Super Moves

In Superman’s Ultimate Attack, he punches you into freaking space!

5.2 Alternate Costumes

Nothing quite beats Red Son Wonder Woman uppercutting the hell out of Blackest Night Batman.

What are you most excited for and what characters would you love to see as DLC? Let us know in the comments! In the meantime, we’re going to prepare to prove to Jimmy once and for all that Harley Quinn could totally beat Doomsday in a fight!

BATMAN Vol. 2: THE CITY OF OWLS Debuts at #1 on THE NEW YORK TIMES’ Hardcover Graphic Books Best Sellers List

BATMAN’s hot streak continues.

This morning we announced that BATMAN Vol. 2: THE CITY OF OWLS was the best-selling graphic novel and BATMAN #18 was DC Entertainment’s top-selling periodical to comic shop retailers in March 2013, according to the world’s largest comic book distributor, Diamond Comic Distributors.

And now, BATMAN Vol. 2: THE CITY OF OWLS debuts at #1 on THE NEW YORK TIMES' Hardcover Graphic Books Best Sellers List today.

But that’s not all: appearing on both the hardcover and paperback list is BATMAN Vol. 1: THE COURT OF OWLS!

As stated by George Gustines in the NEW YORK TIMES Arts Beat, “The top spot is not unfamiliar to Mr. Snyder and Mr. Capullo — they were there last month with “Batman: Night of the Owls.”

So, if you haven’t picked up the books yet, it’s time to catch up. Then get ready for Snyder and Capullo’s next storyline which begins next month - BATMAN: THE ZERO YEAR.

Superman and Batman: Best Friends...and Brothers?!

If you visited either DCComics.com or VertigoComics.com yesterday, you likely saw our slides suggesting that Alfred E. Neuman was joining the DCU as our newest Robin or teasing a new spinoff series called Canadian Vampire—co-written by Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire. They were, of course, a joke, and anyone who clicked on either of the slides was taken to a page revealing the gags.

Unsurprisingly, many of you called these as jokes before you clicked on the link. But how many of you caught our other April Fool’s Day prank?

In addition to the fake projects, we posted a link to “newly updated” profile pages for Batman and Superman, and if you read any of them, you may have noticed a shocking connection between Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent…and their mothers.

Here are the profiles, if you didn’t catch them yesterday:

BATMAN

Dark Knight. Caped Crusader. World’s Greatest Detective. Whatever you know him as, wherever you know him from—the blockbuster movies, TV shows, video games, cartoons, or millions of comics—Batman is proof you don’t need superpowers to be a superhero… and the poster boy for what a bad childhood can do to you.

Millionaire Bruce Wayne was just a kid when he watched his parents get gunned down during a mugging in Gotham City. The crime would define his life, as he dedicated himself to becoming the world’s greatest weapon against crime—the Batman. What the world doesn’t know is that Bruce’s mother, Martha Wayne, was the real target for the mob hit the night that Bruce’s parents were murdered. While in the ambulance it was discovered that she was still alive, and the doctors were able to save her. She signed over guardianship of Bruce to the family butler, Alfred Pennyworth, in hopes that the young boy would be protected, and she was put into the Witness Protection Program and sent to Smallville, Kansas—a quiet town where nothing ever happens.

There Martha met and married a nice young man named Jonathan Kent. With a new inability to carry a child due to the bullet wound, Martha and Jonathan were unable to have the baby they so longed for. However, their prayers were answered when out of the sky, a rocket landed in a nearby field as the couple was driving by. There was a small baby in the rocket who they adopted and gave the name Clark Kent, and who would grow up to be Superman!

Forget his Batarangs, Batmobile, or Utility Belt filled with high-tech weapons. Batman is the most feared superhero of all, because he’s pushed himself to the absolute pinnacle of human achievement. He’s a brilliant detective who’s mastered fighting techniques the world’s barely heard of. An Olympic-caliber athlete with a plan for every occasion, Batman’s seemingly always five steps ahead of his foes. But in his crusade against injustice, two questions always loom: How far will he go to protect the innocent, and will he sacrifice his humanity along the way? And how long can he team up with Superman and yet remain oblivious to the family connection?

SUPERMAN

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…Well, you know how it ends, don’t you? It’s a sentence so iconic, there are probably kids shouting it in Swahili as you read this.

The most recognized superhero in pop culture, Superman has been elevated to mythic folk hero status. Rocketed to Earth from the dying planet Krypton, baby Kal-El was found by a farming couple, Martha and Jonathan Kent, who named the boy Clark Kent and raised him as their own. Discovering his enormous powers, they instilled in him strong moral values—and inspired him to become a hero.

Superman has super-everything—strength, speed, flight, invulnerability, X-ray, heat vision…and a world-famous brother. What the world doesn’t know is that Clark’s mother, Martha, once changed her name from Wayne to Kent. Martha was the real target for the mob hit the night that her husband Thomas Wayne was murdered. While in the ambulance it was discovered that she was still alive, and the doctors were able to save her. She signed over guardianship of their son Bruce to the family butler, Alfred Pennyworth, in hopes that Bruce would be protected, and she was put into the Witness Protection Program and sent to Smallville, Kansas—a quiet town where nothing ever happens.

There Martha met and married the local farmer Jonathan Kent. With a new inability to carry a child due to the bullet wound, Martha and Jonathan were unable to have the baby they so longed for. However, their prayers were answered when out of the sky, a rocket landed in a nearby field as the couple was driving by. There was a small baby in the rocket who they adopted and gave the name Clark, and who would grow up to be Superman!

A universal icon, Superman means different things to the many diverse people he inspires: He’s an alien; an immigrant from a faraway land just looking to help; a country boy fighting the never-ending battle for truth and justice. He’s the most powerful being on the planet, yet Superman’s amazing abilities are also a melancholy reminder of how different he is from the people he’s dedicated to protect.

Yes, they’re not just best friends and two of the most beloved super heroes on the planet. Superman and Batman are also half-brothers.

Or at least they were for one day in the hearts and minds of some of our fans. The authentic profiles have now been restored to the Batman and Superman pages, but not before several of you commented on the changes. And why not? Stranger things have happened in comics. And it is a pretty big coincidence that both their mothers are named Martha.

So what do you think? Were you fooled by the fake bios?
