5.2 Reasons to Look Forward to 2013 So Far

Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of 5.2 Reasons in 2013! After taking a week off for the holidays, your favorite DCComics.com number-and-decimal-based weekly column is back and ready to list the heck out of things!

We all survived the impending apocalypse, drank copious amounts of eggnog, stayed up all night to watch the ball drop, and then passed out for 12 hours out of sheer exhaustion and enthusiasm over counting down the numbers (the Count and us need to hang out more often). But now we're awake and excited for the brand new year! Why? Well, we're about to tell you.

Last year was a great year for comics, with some all-around fantastic moments. But as awesome as 2012 was, 2013 is already shaping up to be a great one, which is why we're giving you the 5.2 Reasons to Look Forward to 2013 So Far!

1. Joker's Last Laugh
Writer Scott Snyder simultaneously put a smile on our face and a scream in our throat when he brought the Joker into the spotlight and kicked off the "Death of the Family" crossover event running through the various Bat-books. Systematically and psychotically, the Joker has personally attacked every member of the Batman Family, striking them at their deepest core. However, that was all the setup to the punchline that finally plays out in BATMAN #17.

2. Jeff Lemire Goes Green
Since the launch of DC COMICS—THE NEW 52, writer Jeff Lemire has been dealing with the Red in the pages of Animal Man. Starting in February, he'll be adding another color to his repertoire by picking up the bow as the ongoing writer on Green Arrow. We've long been fans of Lemire's work, so seeing him take aim with Oliver Queen gets us all aquiver. Oh, also, yadda yadda yadda, something about a bulls-eye. (We're required to do that whenever we talk about archery.)

3. The Wrath of the First Lantern
First introduced in the GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, the mysterious First Lantern enters the galactic playing field in a big way following the conclusion of the "Rise of the Third Army" crossover currently running through the various Lantern titles. Not much is known about the "Wrath of the First Lantern" arc, which begins in GREEN LANTERN #17, but if Johns' previous work is any indication, it's sure to be game-changingly brilliant.

4. Morrison, Exit Stage Awesome
In a very, very bittersweet moment, writer Grant Morrison wraps up both his Action Comics run and his Batman magnum opus in 2013. While we greatly look forward to seeing how his two epics—starring the two biggest characters in comics—conclude, we're even more excited to be able to go back and read both from start to finish in what is sure to be one mind-bending, awe-inspiring sitting. We can only imagine afterward that it will be like in "2001: A Space Odyssey." Only, instead of stars, it’ll be, "My god. It's full of awesome."

5. Justice League of America
Geoff Johns brought together the World's Greatest Heroes in the pages of Justice League. Now, he's bringing together another team, consisting of heroes like Green Arrow, Stargirl and Green Lantern, along with some other characters with more questionable moral standards (we're looking at you Catwoman—really, who could blame us?). The reason behind this new team and the role they'll play remains an enigma for now, but the cast of characters and the teaming of Johns with artist David Finch already has us intrigued.

5.1 Anyone Else Notice SHAZAM! in This?

5.2 Vibe. Clearly.

Seriously though, we're actually pretty excited to see what Geoff Johns and Andrew Kriesberg can do. What are you all excited for this year? Let us know in the comments below!

This Just Happened: The Joker Recruits The Riddler

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read BATMAN #15 and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoilers ahead!)

From the creative team of co-writers Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV and artist Jock, “Red Light, Green Light” serves as more than just the back-up story to BATMAN #15. It also marks the return of one of the most infamous members of Batman’s rogue gallery: The Riddler!

In “Red Light, Green Light”, Edward Nigma aka The Riddler witnesses The Joker’s “remodeling” of Arkham Asylum firsthand. But when the Clown Prince of Crime makes a personal visit to Nigma’s cell, he discovers the horror that The Joker has in store for Gotham. Will The Riddler play a role in The Joker’s grand scheme or does he have plans of his own? Share your thoughts and predictions in the comments section below!

“The fun thing about the backups is that they're where James Tynion and I can take a little time to slow down with Joker and explore his relationships with the other rogues (even as he enlists them in whatever it is his bigger plan may be),” Snyder exclusively told THE SOURCE. “In this one, James and wanted to push the story forward, giving hints of the terrible things coming in #16, but also to take a moment to play the Riddler against Joker, to see what they think of each other. For us, the Joker is the devil's tongue to the heroes, he's all about whispering your nightmares to you, making them come to life. But with Riddler, it's very different. Riddler is someone Joker respects, or wants to respect, if that makes sense. He wants to see Riddler be the scariest villain to Batman he can be, and in doing so, make Batman stronger. And the way Riddler can be stronger, according to Joker, is to challenge Batman's intellect - no one can best Batman in smarts like the Riddler. It’s his job, then, to keep Batman sharp as a blade. It was a blast writing this one - and Jock and David's art is perfect for it: unsettling, kinetic and scary. I hope you enjoy it.”

Stay tuned to THE SOURCE for more about “Death of the Family” and BATMAN in the coming weeks. But in the meantime, check out The Joker and The Riddler side-by-side in the last page of “Red Light, Green Light” below and be sure to pick up a copy of BATMAN #15, in stores now!

Scott Snyder Talks “Death of the Family” with THE WASHINGTON POST

BATMAN #14, by the New York Times bestselling creative team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, hit shelves earlier this week.

The issue made some major revelations about Gotham City’s Clown Prince of Crime and his ruthless plans to annihilate The Dark Knight’s allies.

“Everything that has happened to these characters in the past year is ammunition for the Joker,” said Snyder to THE WASHINGTON POST. “He’s been away for a year, so he’s been watching them all year long, and everything that they care about is something that he can burn to the ground.”

For more from Snyder about “Death of the Family” head on over to Comic Riffs and pick up BATMAN #15 December 12.

Greg Capullo Talks BATMAN #15 and “Death Of The Family”

Yesterday, “Death of the Family” continued as the eagerly-anticipated BATMAN #14 hit shelves.

From the critically revered and New York Times bestselling creative team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, the issue made some major revelations about Gotham City’s Clown Prince of Crime and his ruthless plans to annihilate The Dark Knight’s allies. And with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger for an ending, BATMAN #14 already had us clamoring for more. So what’s coming next?

“We've got some really cool, bombastic stuff here. Some explosive stuff,” Capullo teased to NEWSARAMA about the upcoming BATMAN #15. “And one of the things that The Joker is good at is getting inside people's heads, right? And so, if he can get in their heads and start to divide and conquer, how much easier is it for him to execute his plan? Which is to destroy the Bat-family. So we're going to start to see the seeds of destruction come to fruit here in this issue. And as we saw, The Joker has possession of Alfred. There's a very disturbing scene in this issue, carrying that ball forward down the field.”

Below, take a first look at some interior art from BATMAN #15. For more sneak peeks inside the book, head on over to MTV GEEK, IGN, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, NEWSARAMA and COMIC VINE, where you’ll also get to read more from Capullo about The Joker and what’s still to come in “Death of the Family”!

BATMAN #15 lands in stores on December 12.

Welcome to Li'l Gotham

They say crime doesn’t sleep, but in Gotham, it does enjoy the occasional holiday.

Batman: Li’l Gotham is a brand new, digital first series from artist and author Dustin Nguyen and co-writer Derek Fridolfs. But if you’re expecting this to be a traditional take on Batman, you might want to think again. Batman: Li’l Gotham showcases Dustin’s stylized, watercolor take on the heroes and villains of Gotham, and each new installment will be set against the major holiday of each month. You can look for the debut installment tomorrow, just in time for Halloween.

So what inspired such a different and fun approach to a Batman series? We figured it was best to let the creative team behind it answer that.

“This has been a passion project of mine for some time now, and for anyone that’s followed my work, I’m sure it’s more of an ‘its about time!’ explained Dustin Nguyen. “The look and style is a slight departure from my usual (think the exact opposite of serious), but the idea has always been the same—to take our favorite existing Gotham characters, place them in fun scenarios without having to be tied to just one continuity or look and feel. It’s basically a Batman book for fans, by two huge fans.”

Derek Fridolfs shares his collaborator’s sentiment. “At times in various platforms, Batman has been extremely dark and taken very seriously,” he elaborated. “So respectfully, we’re going in the opposite direction and having a bit of whimsical fun with a whole city of characters beloved by fans and especially ourselves. Li’l size...big enjoyment.”

Equally unique is the choice to tie the series to holidays, but as editor Sarah Gaydos explains, it actually provides a wealth of opportunity. “Tying each story to that month's holiday gives us a really fun opportunity to play with the themes and traditions of each holiday,” she said. “Dustin and Derek bring something special to each and every page. There are SO many ‘Easter eggs,’ so make sure to keep your eyes peeled!”

You can expect Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s installments to follow up tomorrow’s Halloween debut. And whether you read it on your own or share it with the younger DC fans in your life, it really comes down celebrating these holidays and characters together in a fun way. As Sarah puts it, “I love Dustin and Derek's take on Gotham, and I cannot wait for the readers to see what we have in store for them over the coming months.”

5.2 Reasons to Stay Away from Gotham (When Starting a Criminal Empire)

So you want to launch a criminal empire.

Maybe you really, really like money, but don't want to spend years toiling away at a job and earning it through "hard work" and "dedication." Maybe you really like the idea of being in charge and having minions to do your bidding—and the idea of monologues gets you as giddy as Cookie Monster locked in an Oreo factory. Maybe you seriously love the movie Scarface but totally missed the point of that film. Or maybe Super-Villains Month on DCComics.com has brought out a bit of your evil side—which we totally get (we recently saw a sign that said "No Loitering" and stood there for, like, 20 seconds!).

Whatever the reason, being bad just seems oh so good all of a sudden, and you’ve decided it's time you started your own villainous organization. Considering the amount of heroes that generally populate the DC Universe, we don't necessarily encourage this course of action, but to each their own. We won't judge. But we will offer this little piece of advice: DO NOT GO TO GOTHAM CITY. Seriously. Start your organization somewhere else.

Gotham may seem appealing—it’s already a breeding ground for crime and seems to have a revolving door policy on criminals—but don't be fooled. In fact, we’re here with 5.2 Reasons to Stay Away from Gotham (When Starting a Criminal Empire).

1. Batman

Honestly, this should be obvious. If you didn't know, there's a nocturnal enthusiast in Gotham that enjoys dressing like a bat, hopping around rooftops, and—most importantly to you—beating the ever-living tar out of criminals. This guy has a zero tolerance policy on crime and will use not only his fists to prove it but a whole array of gadgets and gizmos designed to disable even the toughest of foes—and believe us, there are some tough ones. He got his back broken and got better. He was jettisoned back in time as a quantum-leaping bomb and still figured a way out of it. Unless you have superpowers—and even then it probably wouldn't do you much good—he is not someone you want to tangle with.

2. Criminal Overpopulation

You never want to saturate the market. Stock goes down or whatever. We're not too sure how it works. We hide our money in squirrel nests—because if they can hide their acorns in our yard, we can hide our money in theirs. The point is that too many people competing for the same steal is bad for business, and Gotham gangs are incredibly territorial. It's not uncommon for wars to break out and one gang to eliminate another. In fact, there was an instance after an earthquake where that exact thing happened. But really the biggest gangs already belong to the biggest bads, and they would not hesitate to torture or kill anyone who tries to encroach on their territory—especially some upstart newcomer.

3. Costumed Villainy

Another trademark of the Gotham City criminals is their tendency toward the spectacle—namely dressing up in costumes and running amok throughout the city committing acts of themed villainy. The most powerful villains all have their own shtick, and if you really want to become someone in Gotham, you'll have to follow suit. However, all the really good ones are already taken: ice, birds, enigmas, Alice in Wonderland-based psychotic delusions. But hey, you could always be the next Balloon Master, committing crimes and leaving behind balloon animals as your calling card.

4. It's Full of Crazy People

Look, Gotham City is protected by a potentially unstable human being that dresses like a bat. So needless to say, its villainous population isn't exactly the sanest group of individuals. One guy commits crimes on holidays dressed in a costumed based on said holiday. (Google Calendar Man if you don't believe us.) But make no mistake: crazy as they may be, they are all incredibly dangerous. Going into Gotham, you're practically walking into a madhouse...

5. Arkham Asylum

...and then you get sent to an actual madhouse. Just about all of Gotham's worst villains get sent to Arkham eventually. And of course, they respond by eventually and often violently breaking out—leaving behind a path of death and chaos with a regularity that would make the sun rising every day seem like a freak occurrence. Arkham Asylum is not a place you want to be. Ever. Unless you enjoy living each day of your life in constant fear of a guy who thinks his ventriloquist dummy is real or a girl who not only spends every day talking to plants, but somehow gets them to do what she says. In which case, maybe you belong in there after all.

5.1 There's a 10-Year-Old That Can Beat You Up... And Will Gladly Do So

5.2 You Never, Ever, Ever Want to Run Into This Guy:

So as you can see, Gotham City might not be the best place to kickstart your criminal empire. Maybe you should try Metropolis... oh wait, they have Superman. Well, there’s Star Ci... Central or Keystone... no... You know what, maybe you just shouldn't start a criminal empire. We really don't think it's going to work out. Instead, keep visiting DCComics.com and live the bad life vicariously as Super-Villains Month continues!
