DIGITAL FIRST SPOTLIGHT: Batman Beyond

Did you know that you no longer have to wait till Wednesday to read a brand new DC comic? From the early adventures of a still-developing Superman to epic-scale action set far in our future to vastly imaginative Batman tales spun by some of the best creators in comics, you can find the action you crave starring the characters you love Monday through Friday, and you don’t even need to leave your living room to do it. (Also, be sure to read to the end of the article to find out how you can win a free download of each day’s title!)

Our look at DC’s Digital First titles continues today with a look at BATMAN BEYOND, one of three “Beyond” titles that rotate every Wednesday (the other two are SUPERMAN BEYOND and JUSTICE LEAGUE BEYOND). All of the “Beyond” titles take place in the future, but it was Batman Beyond that defined the look and feel of that future when it first debuted as an animated series in the late 90s. After the series wrapped, Terry McGinnis, the Batman of the future, continued his adventures in comics and we’re very happy to continue that tradition today.

Here’s series writer Adam Beechen on why Batman Beyond is worth reading whether you’re a fan of the series or a first-timer:

“Gotham of the future: a rigid world of cold, impersonal technology; super-criminals with power beyond imagining; gang kids who rebel against the status quo by worshipping the legend of the Joker, causing chaos the way they think their hero might. Bruce Wayne as senior citizen, too old to be Batman, trying to train Terry McGinnis, a modern teenage protégé with very different attitudes, to take his place against foes Bruce never dreamed of in his prime. And now, an insane genius, who’s figured out how to turn the Joker-worshippers into a mad army of ten thousand clowns…and the deadliest threat Batman or Gotham has ever faced. Sound cool?

If you loved the classic Batman Beyond animated series, the new digital comics plunge you back into the universe that captured your imagination, and it’s like you never left.  If you’re a Batman fan of any kind but never saw the cartoon, get ready to have your mind blown by a whole new take on the character. And if you’re a reader who’s new to comics but enjoys excitement, action and thrills, have we got a world for you. Now’s the perfect time for anyone to pick up the book, as both the original Batman and the new kid in the cowl confront their deadliest challenges. Grab your utility belt and cape, and enjoy the fun—welcome to a Batman beyond your wildest imaginings!”

DC COMICS LAUNCHES BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED

(The cover for BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #1)

Beginning in February 2012, DC Comics will be launching BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED, a monthly print periodical which will collect chapters from various digital-first series. Releasing weekly, JUSTICE LEAGUE BEYOND and BATMAN BEYOND will come out as individual chapters prior to (and in conjunction with) the collected, 48-page monthly BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED print edition.

JUSTICE LEAGUE BEYOND is from the creative team of Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs, adding Batman (Terry McGinnis) to the team of superheroes to combat a Neo Goath-related enemy. And in BATMAN BEYOND, from Adam Beecham and Norm Breyfogle, McGinnis and Bruce Wayne face an onslaught of Jokerz – and the return of an old foe.

DC Entertainment has previously released digital-first series including BEYOND THE FRINGE, as well as the limited run of BATMAN: ARKHAM UNLEASHED and BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY, which was recently collected in a hardcover release last month. BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED marks the first time that DC Entertainment is launching an ongoing series digitally ahead of its planned monthly print release.

Inque’s Origins Revealed

Whether hero or villain, everyone has an origin story. In BATMAN BEYOND #8, writer Adam Beechen and artists Chris Batista and Rich Perotta weave together the never-before-told full tale of the misunderstood anti-hero Inque.

When a young girl is torn apart by personal tragedy, she does not turn onto the path of justice like her nemesis Batman once did. Instead, she channels her suffering into an involuntary transformation that results in her becoming a member of Gotham’s criminal underbelly.

BATMAN BEYOND #8 is the final issue of this run of the series. BATMAN BEYOND will return with an all-new #1 and story arc, “10,000 Clowns,” in 2012.
