Duende!

Batman calls duende “the fierce lust for life that we feel and express when we know death is near.”

In BATMAN INCORPORATED issue 3, the Dark Knight heads to the heart of South America as he attempts to reconnect with Batman Incorporated’s Argentinean representative, Gaucho.

The issue goes on sale this Wednesday and has it all:

* Grant Morrison's writing.

* Art by Yanick Paquette and Michel Lacombe.

* Duende.

* The timeless question--which kills faster? The bitter kiss of the scorpion or the poison of betrayal?

What more can I say?

A few blind items

How do I know that it's almost 5 o'clock on Friday? The big tip off is that fellow SOURCE blogger and all around good guy Austin Trunick already has his NFL game day face on. On Friday. For Sunday's games. Let's just say, Mr. Trunick takes his football very seriously.

So we're gonna have to wrap things up here this week on THE SOURCE before Austin actually puts on shoulder pads or something.

Let's end our Friday with three blind items...

* Which superhero team is losing their headquarters?

* What classic cult favorite DC horror series is getting the DC Comics Presents treatment next year

* Who is pulling the strings of the Legion of Super-Villains?

...And a look at this stunning cover to BATMAN INCORPORATED issue 5. Amazing.

See you all next week.

Who is BATWOMAN?

Today, BATWOMAN #0 hits, featuring an all star creative roster that includes writer/artist J.H. Williams III, co-writer W. Haden Blackman and artist Amy Reeder. Springing out of a best-selling, Eisner and GLAAD Award-winning arc in DETECTIVE COMICS, BATWOMAN #0 sets the stage for the ongoing BATWOMAN series slated to launch in February – and it’s a perfect primer. The issue follows the Dark Knight as he ponders the very question we kick this post off with. Can Batman put the clues together and confirm Batwoman’s identity? My money’s on yes, but the fun’s in how the story unfolds. Trust me on this one.

By now, you’ve probably seen pages at Newsarama, IGN – along with a great interview with Williams – and COMIC BOOK RESOURCES (not to mention an excellent roundtable interview with the entire creative team), but why not take another look? Consider this a gentle reminder that today is an epic new comic day. Just take a look at those pages below. And stick around for a spotlight on another must-buy Bat-book.

BATWOMAN #0 hits today.

Dick Grayson looks into the ‘Black Mirror’ in DETECTIVE COMICS #871

Somehow, tools, evidence and weapons relating to some of Batman’s deadliest foes are ending up in the wrong hands – and people are dying because of it.

Newly ensconced Batman Dick Grayson must piece together the pieces of the mystery, which point to a deadly new adversary. But will he be able to bring down his new enemy before more die?

Writer Scott Snyder, the co-creator of THE NEW YORK TIMES-bestselling AMERICAN VAMPIRE (which just got a very nice writeup in the ASSOCIATED PRESS, featuring an interview with the legendary Stephen King) joins forces with artist and LOSERS co-creator Jock to kick off “Black Mirror,” the creative team’s first arc on DETECTIVE COMICS – and it’s as on target as you can imagine. This issue puts the emphasis on the “detective” part of the book’s title, putting Grayson a few steps behind a new adversary while lives hang in the balance. For more hints, swing by USA TODAY, which featured a first look at the series along with some comments from Snyder.

But that’s not all. The issue also features Snyder and artist Francesco Francavilla’s COMMISSIONER GORDON co-feature, which brings a haunting ghost from Gordon’s past screaming into his present. Creepy, chilling and must-read stuff.

DETECTIVE COMICS #871 hits tomorrow.

Paul Cornell steps in for a three-issue arc on BATMAN AND ROBIN

A body unceremoniously dug out of its grave. A link to Bruce Wayne’s romantic past and tension among the Dynamic Duo of Batman Dick Grayson and Robin.

Writer Paul Cornell sprinkles a handful of tantalizing clues with artist Scott McDaniel and in the process builds to one of the coolest villain reveals of the last year.

We’ve got a first look at the action packed opening of the issue. Can you say Batman and Robin crash a wedding? Well, now you can.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #17 hits Wednesday.

Grant Morrison and David Finch team up to bring Bruce Wayne back in style

In addition to being a comic fan, I’m also a sports and music nerd. And like any fan, my imagination tends to wander. What if singer X played with guitarist Z? What if QB so-and-so had WR what’s-his-name to throw to? Would they have made one great, epic album? Would they have won the Super Bowl? The same kind of logic applies to comics. What if this writer worked with that artist on character X for an issue?

Well, I can check one of those fantasy team-ups off my list. This week, writer Grant Morrison -- who has masterminded the adventures of Batman to unforeseen heights over the last few years -- joins forces with superstar artist David Finch for BATMAN: THE RETURN.

The one-shot issue leads into Morrison’s ongoing BATMAN INCORPORATED series and gives fans a quick taste of what Finch has in store when he launches his own Batman title – December’s BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT – as an artist and writer. But it’s so much more than that.

In classic Morrison fashion, we’re presented with a collection of tantalizing clues, a mysterious new villain and the comfortable and flowing characterization that makes it seem much too easy. All expertly illustrated by one of the modern masters in Finch.

This is the first chapter of the next stage of the Batman books – a new status quo, a future in peril and your favorite characters presented through the mind-blowing imaginations of Grant Morrison and David Finch. Is more convincing needed?

Probably not. But here’s a first look anyway. BATMAN: THE RETURN hits tomorrow.

BATMAN in NOVEMBER starts here

Sit tight folks, because it’s gonna be a BATMAN-centric day, and I don’t think you’d have it any other way.

First up we have BATMAN #704, which marks the return of writer/artist Tony Daniel. Tony returns full force, bringing to bear his impressive array of talents for one hell of an issue. The story, which features guest spots from Bruce Wayne, Catwoman and a new, mysterious villain and the return of a classic foe, is packed with action that evokes the best of Batman’s past in an energetic and in-your-face way.

So, without further adieu, here’s a first look at BATMAN #704, which hits tomorrow. Stay tuned right here for two more major Batman previews, as we kick off BATMAN IN NOVEMBER in style.
