Announcing SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1

Yesterday, we announced DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1. Today, we’re pleased to announce that another superhero you may or may not have heard of will be getting a special Annual issue of his own: Superman.

“Ever wonder what's out there beyond the farthest known reaches of the DC Universe?” writer Keith Giffen teased to THE SOURCE. “Superman's about to get the answer to that - in spades - as we introduce an entirely new cosmic realm and drop him into the middle of it. The DC Universe's cosmic presence is about to be dramatically expanded and it all starts with ... a game show?”

"Captured and transported to an alien world, Superman will fight for his life against the galaxy's best equipped bounty hunters,” editor Pat McCallum told THE SOURCE about the 48-page issue. “It's all part of a planet-wide reality game, televised live and used to raise money for...something. BONUS: Some unexpected help in the form of a deep-cover agent of the Green Lantern Corps!”

SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1 will fly into stores on August 29th.

With AQUAMAN #1 hitting stores tomorrow, series writer Geoff Johns was interviewed by various outlets. "I think it's a great time to try Aquaman,” Johns told COMIC BOOK RESOURCES. “It's a great challenge to see if we can make the character captivating for people. I just really find him interesting. What makes him cool is the challenge of making him cool, because he is Aquaman!"

“I think that he's the ultimate underdog to me. I think that's a good thing,” Johns said of his series’ protagonist to NEWSARAMA. “He's underestimated by everybody, except Mera. Balancing the perception of what Aquaman is, and trying to break that perception, is what the book's all about."

TRUE WEST has the exclusive preview of ALL-STAR WESTERN #1, by Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Moritat, which sets Jonah Hex in 19th century Gotham City.

And if you want to travel to outer space, NEWSARAMA has your exclusive first look at GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS by Tony Bedard, Tyler Kirkham and Batt.

The cover to GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #1 revealed

When we revealed the covers for the first issues coming out of DC Comics-The New 52, the cover for GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #1 was very ominous. Why? Because we didn’t want to spoil the line-up of the New Guardians team just yet.

Today, take a look at Tyler Kirkham and Batt’s cover for the book. Featuring a member from each of the color Corps, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #1 flies into stores on September 28th.

War Aftermath: Picking Up The Pieces

Hal Jordan stripped of his ring? Green Lanterns abruptly resign their posts? Sinestro is a Green Lantern again??

And the mystery behind the renegade Sinestro gaining a Green Lantern ring is not helping. At all. If the Guardians can explain why their greatest enemy wears their badge once again, they certainly aren’t talking. And amidst all of this turmoil, a conspiracy forms that could destroy the Corps from within.

Tyler Kirkham on GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS

(The cover for GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #1 by Tyler Kirkham and BATT)

Starting this September, artist Tyler Kirkham (GREEN LANTERN CORPS) will be illustrating (along with BATT) the new series, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS. Led by Kyle Rayner, the New Guardians are a powerful team comprised of the full spectrum of the corps. We caught up with Tyler during his early process of illustrating the new series.

THE SOURCE: What about DC's new 52 titles excites you the most?

TYLER KIRKHAM: There are still DC books I'm not familiar with so this will help me to start from scratch, and pick up books I've wanted to read for a while. I also plan on getting an iPad or tablet soon and want to start reading some of my books digitally. So with the books starting from # 1, I can have a whole series from the beginning. I'm extremely excited about it.

How and why are you shaking up the series' status quo?

Well my series is one of the new ones. GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS. I'm glad Kyle will still be staring in my new book. I really love drawing him. This book will focus on all the ring color corps, so well will get to see a lot more of the Lantern universe than the other Lantern titles.

What new characters will debut in the series?

All I can say for now is Kyle Rayner. But there will be members from all the other color corps.

Will we see new character designs?

Most likely. As of now, we’re still in the development stage.

What's the biggest surprise you've had working on this character/book?

As I'm just getting started, the whole series is a surprise to me. I think the whole story will surprise people, as we discover secrets from all the other corps.

What secret has been the hardest to keep?

Just the fact that I wasn't staying on the GREEN LANTERN CORPS series. I wanted to tell some of my friends and fans but held off until it was announced.

What’s the unofficial tagline for this series, in your own words?

“What will happen when you put a member from all the Lantern corps in the same room?”
