Preview Monday: SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1 and AMERICAN VAMPIRE #32

For this week’s installment of Preview Monday, we’re giving you exclusive first looks at SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1 and AMERICAN VAMPIRE #32!

“Rotworld” continues in SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1, as the origins of Alec Holland and Anton Arcane's epic feud are explored. Years ago, when Holland was a young man and still a student botanist, he traveled to the Carpathian Mountains, at the request of Arcane, to study the residual radiation from Soviet testing. But something strange was also happening in this small and barren mountain town. How has it avoided conquest for hundreds of years from invading armies? And don't miss Holland's first meeting with Abby Arcane. From co-writers Scott Snyder and Scott Tuft and artist Becky Cloonan, SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1 arrives in stores this Wednesday. Earlier today, we showed you a sneak peek at the issue, but if that left you wanting more, click here to see a full exclusive preview!

It's the penultimate issue of “The Blacklist”! Pearl is held captive as Hattie reveals how she became allies with B.D. Bloch. But why did Hattie betray Pearl and what does she have planned for her as revenge? And where does Skinner fit in all of this? There are a ton of surprises in this issue you don't want to miss! Written by acclaimed author Scott Snyder and featuring explosive artwork by Rafael Albuquerque, AMERICAN VAMPIRE #32 lands in stores this week. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue.

Annuals Spotlight: SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1

This Halloween, DC Comics will release its next batch of Annuals. These special oversized issues will not only build off of the events in their respective series, but will also greatly impact the expanding DC Universe. Leading up to their October 31 releases, we’ll be putting individual spotlights on each of these Annual issues by giving you special sneak peeks at what’s to come! You’ve already seen us tease JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK ANNUAL #1 and BATGIRL ANNUAL #1. Today, journey into “Rotworld” with SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1.

Examining the classic rivalry between Alec Holland and Anton Arcane, SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1 shows not only the duo’s first encounter, but also introduces Alec to the beautiful Abby. Planting the seeds of “Rotworld,” this must-have issue is co-written by Scott Snyder and Scott Tuft and features stunning art by Becky Cloonan.

“Several years before the gory encounter seen in SWAMP THING #0, Alec Holland and Anton Arcane met for the first time, in the twisted little town in the Carpathians that Anton calls home,” teased Associate Editor Chris Controy. “But it wasn’t just Anton that Alec met there — he also fell hard for the tragic love of his life, Abigail Arcane. So why don’t either of them remember that meeting? How did Alec survive Anton’s wrath? And who’s the mysterious benefactor that comes to Alec’s aid?”

“Scott Snyder and Becky Cloonan’s first collaboration on BATMAN #12 was a spectacular success, so reuniting them on a classic, spine-tingling monster story was irresistible,” Conroy continued. “Becky had a blast drawing a story that combined romance and horror (as she put it: ‘I live to draw tension building up to a kiss ... and people peeking through doors’), and Scott’s co-writer on the acclaimed SEVERED, Scott Tuft, brought a modern take to the ‘evil town in the mountains’ vibe of Arcane’s seat of power. Wrap it up in a framing sequence set in ‘Rotworld’ by Andrew Belanger and Karl Kerschl, which features a brief taste of events to come in SWAMP THING #14, and you’ve got an Annual we’re awfully proud of! And getting a double-sized serving of Swamp Thing on Halloween? TOO perfect. We’re happy to be that one house in your neighborhood that gives out the full-size Snickers bars, instead of the wimpy ones.”

Spotlight on BATMAN #12 Guest Artist Becky Cloonan

Earlier this week, we showed you an exclusive preview of BATMAN #12. A stand-alone issue starring the esoteric Harper Row, BATMAN #12 comes to you from the creative team of New York Times bestselling writer Scott Snyder and acclaimed guest artist Becky Cloonan.

“If I could go back in time and tell myself ten years ago that I would be drawing Batman ... well I don't know if I would because I might mess up continuity, so here I am,” Cloonan told THE SOURCE. “I admit that I had some stage fright going in to this book, but Scott Snyder wrote an awesome script about a character that I could instantly identify with, and was on top of that, fun to draw. Harper is my kind of girl- I even had a similar haircut when I was 20, although I was admittedly not as cool."

"Scott had me drawing her in such cool environments too, from living in her crappy slum apartment to working on The Grid – even stealing cupcakes at Wayne Manor (what did I tell you? She's my kind of girl!). Every scene had me thinking of how Harper would react in each new environment."

"A lot of time was spent thinking about her facial expressions and hand gestures, how she does her hair and what her posture is like, building on what Scott had told me about her and using Greg Capullo's amazing designs to help inform my sense of who this character is. I had a great time drawing this book, and I can't say how happy I am to have the opportunity to help bring Harper to life. Also, BATMAN!!”

“This is an issue that means a lot to me for a couple reasons,” added Snyder. “First, I got to work with an artist I've looked up to for a very long time – Becky Cloonan. I first became aware of Becky nearly ten years ago, with the great series, DEMO. What I've always loved about her work is its emotional expressiveness. She has an incredible ability to convey emotion in story. Not just through her characters - their facial expressions and nuanced body language - but also through her storytelling, through the directorial choices she makes, the angles chosen, the lines (sometimes crisp and dark, sometimes lush with brushwork). The bottom line is she's an incredibly empathetic storyteller, someone who brings a story to life on the page in such emotionally enveloping ways."

"Which is why I thought she'd be perfect for this story. BATMAN #12 properly introduces a character I care a lot about, Harper Row. You saw Harper briefly in BATMAN #1 and in BATMAN #7 (when she basically jump-started Batman's heart), but her story - her relationship to Gotham and Batman - has yet to be told. So this is where you'll learn all about her, and why she seems so familiar with the Dark Knight. Hers is also a story that matters a lot to me. She's a young woman facing tremendous odds. She's emancipated from her parents, living and working in Gotham, struggling to get by and take care of her younger brother, Cullen. She's got a lot of problems, a lot of issues, and a lot of heart. And like I said, with Becky on art, Harper practically jumps right off the page. So check out BATMAN #12 - I can't wait for you to see how Becky has brought this story to life."

"And a final note: I've been told that Becky is actually the first woman to draw Batman in the main series. Which stunned both me and her. But if that's so, I just want to say that I'm really happy and proud that she's the one to do it. And Gotham is a better place for having her in it.”

Below, take a sneak peek at some of Becky’s stunning art from BATMAN #12 and don’t forget to pick up the issue, in stores today!
