NPR Names WONDER WOMAN, VOL. 1: BLOOD on their List of "Graphic Novels That Flew Under The Radar in 2012"

Yesterday, we told you about how AQUAMAN, BATGIRL, and SWEET TOOTH were all spotlighted in THE NEW YORK TIMES’ Graphic Novel Holiday Gift Guide for 2012.

Well, as the year continues to wind down, we’re pleased to announce that another DCE title has made an additional best-of-2012 list. This morning, NPR published their list of “Graphic Novels That Flew Under The Radar in 2012,” and making the list was WONDER WOMAN, VOL. 1: BLOOD by Brian Azzarello, Cliff Chiang, and Tony Akins.

According to NPR, WONDER WOMAN is “easily the best series to emerge from DC's recent New 52 initiative … Azzarello breathes dark new life into Wonder Woman's world of petty, spiteful and manipulative Greek gods, and in the process transforms her from superhero to Classical hero. He is aided in this endeavor by artist Cliff Chiang, who has infused the book with a decidedly creepy note of Jungian horror, using bold, thick linework to depict a world of myth that's not remotely fantastical, but instead grimly, disquietingly real.”

AQUAMAN, BATGIRL and SWEET TOOTH spotlighted in THE NEW YORK TIMES’ 2012 Graphic Novel Holiday Gift Guide

Last week, we told you about the various DCE titles making the best-of-the-year lists over at AMAZON.COM and BARNES AND NOBLE.

Today, we’re pleased to announce that THE NEW YORK TIMES has published their 2012 Holiday Gift Guide, and making the Graphic Novels list was AQUAMAN, VOL. 1: THE TRENCH and BATGIRL, VOL. 1: THE DARKEST REFLECTION.

“Two of the best series to emerge from DC Comics’ decision to reintroduce its heroes feature characters that embrace what came before and move forward,” wrote THE NEW YORK TIMES. “In AQUAMAN: THE TRENCH, the writer Geoff Johns is providing the building blocks to make the undersea hero an A-lister, and the artwork by Ivan Reis is magnificent. Over in BATGIRL: THE DARKEST REFLECTION, Gail Simone has returned Barbara Gordon to the cowl, after a miraculous end to her paralysis at the hands of the Joker — though the post-traumatic stress lingers.”

Also mentioned on the list was Jeff Lemire’s SWEET TOOTH, which THE NEW YORK TIMES described as “engrossing.” Click here to check out the full list and congratulations to all!

Barnes & Noble Lists BATMAN: EARTH ONE as one of the "Best Quirky, Beautiful, Different Books of 2012"

A couple of days ago, we told you that SWAMP THING, VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES and WONDER WOMAN, VOL. 1: BLOOD made AMAZON.COM’s list of Best Comics and Graphic Novels of 2012.

Today, we’re pleased to announce that BARNES & NOBLE has released their top picks of the year, and making the list of “Best Quirky, Beautiful, Different Books of 2012” was DC Comics’ BATMAN: EARTH ONE.

In case you missed it when it hit shelves this past summer, BATMAN: EARTH ONE is an original graphic novel re-imagining the World’s Greatest Detective as a flawed and fallible young man fumbling his way through feelings of isolation by pinning them on a quest for vengeance. This Batman is no protector of innocents; he’s an angry vigilante with little interest in heroics, and with a lot to learn about the city’s mean streets.

BATMAN: EARTH ONE comes to you from the acclaimed and reunited creative team of #1 New York Times bestselling author Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank. Together, these two talents have presented a new vision of the Batman mythology – not as a caped crusader, but as a lonely young man lashing out at the city that robbed him of his family. In this book, Johns and Frank explore the story you think you know, but with new twists on the well-known origin, new interpretations of classic characters and a gritty, contemporary setting as the narrative’s backdrop.

“BATMAN: EARTH ONE is a modern retelling of the beginning of Bruce Wayne and Batman and it’s a look at the man more than it is the mask,” Johns told BUZZFEED upon the book’s release in July. “For Gary and I, we wanted to take a very human approach to these characters … you’ll see a very different Gotham and a very, very different Alfred and a Bruce Wayne who is not quite the Batman that everyone knows. He’s not very good yet, he’s not a fighting machine. He’s just a guy who is seeking vengeance.”

AMAZON Releases Best Comics and Graphic Novels of 2012 List

This week, the editors at AMAZON.COM released their picks for Best Books of the Year. And making their list of top Comics and Graphic Novels was SWAMP THING, VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES and WONDER WOMAN, VOL. 1: BLOOD.

“SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES is the first part of a story I've been dreaming about doing since I arrived at DC,” writer Scott Snyder told THE SOURCE upon the book’s release in August. “[Artist] Yanick Paquette has done the work of his life on this book, and I couldn't be prouder of him, or it. And Marco Rudy and Victor Ibanez, Val Staples and Nathan Fairbairn all brought the world of Swamp Thing to life in wonderfully nightmarish ways. So come to the swamp. The Green is waiting.”

And written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Cliff Chiang with art by Tony Akins and Dan Green, WONDER WOMAN, VOL. 1: BLOOD gives the iconic character a new origin (Zeus is her father) and extends her family to include various Greek Gods. Since it’s debut, this acclaimed series has brought darker aspects to Diana’s stories by blending superhero, mythological and horror genres to create a fresh take on the story of the Amazon warrior.
