THE FLASH ANNUAL #1 Spotlight

This month, DC Comics will release its next batch of Annuals. These special oversized issues will not only build off of the events in their respective series, but will also greatly impact the expanding DC Universe. Every day this week on THE SOURCE, we’ll be putting individual spotlights on each of these Annual issues by talking to various writers, artists, and editors to give you special sneak peeks at what’s to come! Next up is THE FLASH ANNUAL #1.

"THE FLASH ANNUAL #1 is the culmination of the past six issues, as we finally get to see the DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Rogues team up against the Flash,” co-writer Brian Buccellato revealed to THE SOURCE. “[Co-writer and artist] Francis Manapul and I are bridging the gap between the old ‘gun-toting’ Rogues that everyone remembers from previous continuity, and the new meta-powered incarnations. In the Annual, we finally reveal HOW the Rogues got their super powers and at what cost."

"We couldn’t be happier with the collection of talent we assembled to work from Francis’ layouts. Broken up into chapters, on art duties we have Marcus To, Diogenes Neves, Marcio Takara, Wes Craig, and FLASH legend Scott Kolins! We just had to offer Scott the Rogues ‘flashback chapter,’ and were delighted that he accepted. His take on ‘The Old Rogues’ is new and fresh, yet pays homage to the gang’s history. It might sound clichéd, but it’s truly everything we hoped for and more."

"While the Annual does answer a lot of questions and give context to Flash and his relationship with the DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Rogues, it also propels the book into the next major story arc,” Buccellato continued. “We got the biggest thrill out of having Flash team up with someone unexpected in his fight versus the Rogues. I don’t want to spoil anything, but his uneasy partnership is with a former Rogue that was recently left out in the cold."

THE FLASH ANNUAL #1 speeds into stores on August 29.

Announcing Marcus To and Ray McCarthy’s Guest Arc on THE FLASH

Earlier this week, we told you about THE FLASH ANNUAL #1 coming your way this summer. This morning, we’ve got some more exciting news for fans of the Scarlet Speedster. Joining the acclaimed creative team of THE FLASH for a special guest arc on issues #10 and #11 are BATWING artists Marcus To and Ray McCarthy.

“FLASH #10 spotlights the reimagined Weather Wizard and his twisted family tree, and we’re thrilled to welcome artist Marcus To and inker Ray McCarthy on board to tell the tale,” Editor Matt Idelson told THE SOURCE. “Marcus shares studio space with regular FLASH artist Francis Manapul (we’ve enjoyed hearing his snarky comments in the background of our calls with Francis), so we’re keeping things in the family, as it were... and as you can see from the double-page spread below, Marcus is gonna blow through this book like a hurricane! Issue #10 is going to be a blast, but just wait until July’s scorching issue #11, where — fittingly for the height of summer — you’ll be re-introduced to the very nasty, very crispy Heat Wave!

And while you’re impatiently drumming your fingers on your desk, waiting for these two issues (you are annoying everyone seated nearby, and you should really stop), why not check out the terrific work Marcus and Ray have been doing on BATWING recently?”

Following Marcus and Ray’s 2-issue arc, Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato will return as the regular art team of THE FLASH (beginning with issue #12). Below, take an exclusive first look at Marcus’ artwork for THE FLASH #10, which goes on sale June 27th.

Francis Manapul Celebrates Mother's Day

Mother’s Day may not be until this weekend but we here at THE SOURCE thought we’d jumpstart our celebration by asking some of our creators to reflect on how their mothers inspired their careers in the comic book industry.  Francis Manapul, artist and co-writer of THE FLASH, shares a personal story below.

As an adult we all have fond memories of the superhero comics we read as kids. To tell you the truth, I honestly don’t remember very many of them. With their complex plot points and years of continuity, I was just excited to see bright colorful heroes saving the day. But there’s one heroic story that I do remember.

When I was a kid having just arrived to Canada, I struggled to fit in. But as a keen observer of the cultural difference there was one thing I did notice. If you had cool shoes, kids would think you were cool. Now, being newly immigrated with a single mom wasn’t exactly the ideal situation to be able to dress to impress. But my mom was an artist herself, and did quite good at improvising. She got a hold of these used , but cool looking high top black shoes. She bought new laces to make them look slick, and to add a bit of a personal touch, she put neon green laces on one shoe, and hot pink on the other. I thought they were cool as hell, but the real test was how well the other kids would receive them.

So there I was in the schoolyard, on a nice summer day, chin up, thinking, “Alright this is when I get to be one of the cool kids”. Done deal right? Uhm… not so much. One of my classmates strolled up to me, looked down at my shoes and asked me a question. While trying to hold back a snicker, he cackled, “Why are you wearing winter boots?” He cracked up and proceeded to tell all the other kids that I was some weirdo wearing winter boots in the middle of summer. I didn’t know any better, and neither did my mom; they looked like normal shoes to me. Needless to say, I was embarrassed and felt even more of an outcast. So I did what every kid did in grade school feared doing… I started crying.

The teachers brought me down to the office, and assured me they were cool looking shoes. But the thought of going back to class in those boots petrified me. So they let me call my mom from her work to tell her what had happened. Much like the super heroes of the comic books I used to read, she up and left her work, went home and grabbed me my “normal” pair of shoes and came down to the school with them. What made this even more amazing was that she did all this while taking the bus. She easily could have said no, that’s reasonable. But not her, she really was like a superhero to me. She did what she could to come to the rescue no matter how unreasonable the situation was. I’m still stunned to this day at how awesome my mom is for doing that.

This single event doesn’t even scratch the surface of all the amazing sacrifices she’s made in order to give her kids a better opportunity in life. She left a promising career in the Philippines in order to give us a better future. Nothing is more heroic than that. It’s this sense of sacrifice and heroism that I try to infuse into my stories. If Barry Allen can do half the things my mom did, then I’d have told a pretty heroic tale for the Flash.

Announcing THE FLASH ANNUAL #1

Over the past two days, we’ve told you about the upcoming releases of DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1 and SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1. The fun doesn’t stop there because today, we’re here to tell you about another member of the Justice League getting his own Annual issue: The Flash.

“One by one, the Flash’s rogues have been returning to the pages of THE FLASH — along with some new faces, like the mysterious Turbine,” Editor Matt Idelson told THE SOURCE. “But surely everyone’s been waiting for the main event, and we’re thrilled to tell you it’s coming your way in THE FLASH ANNUAL! The reunited Rogues hate the Flash just as much as they always have (if not more) -- but this time, they’re gunning for Captain Cold, too! It’s all-out mayhem, everybody vs. everybody, with an even bigger and nastier threat preparing to swing into the fray at exactly the wrong time...

We couldn’t be more excited about this one, and we hope you will be too! It really is a story so big, it needed the giant size of an Annual to contain it... and we’re still kinda worried it might blow the cover off. So please use caution when purchasing.”

EVERYBODY’S TALKIN’ ABOUT THE FLASH #6

Captain Cold makes his return in THE FLASH #6, available this week. Speaking with POPMATTERS about the re-imagined rogue and what’s on the horizon for Barry Allen, co-writers Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato also addressed the design of the series and their unique use of real-life science to tell a science-fiction story. “We have certain goals in terms of where we want to take Barry Allen, and the Flash,” said Manapul. “And what ends up happening usually is we’d kinda just look around the internet and do some research and see what science we can incorporate into our story. There’s been certain instances where the science has dictated more where we’re going. But for the most part the story has always been pretty clear, and it just so happens that certain science fits and falls right into what we’re doing. It’s pretty amazing what’s out there, what’s real and what’s happening and what’s about to happen. And what we’re able to do is even take speculative science and bring it a little further as if it was real. So that’s what we have in this medium.” “I don’t think we’re scientific geniuses or anything,” Buccellato continued, “but we have some vision for the character, and we’re inquisitive and we’re able to find scientific explanations to justify the stories we want to tell.” And CNN’s GEEK OUT highlights THE FLASH #6 as part of their New Comic Wednesday, saying that the story by Manapul and Buccellato highlights “everything that is great about the speedster his Midwestern setting and blue-collar roots in his secret identity as Barry Allen, and his way of fighting crime both in and out of costume (he was all over CSI before most people knew what that was).” THE FLASH #6 is available in comic book stores this week.

Mike Choi’s variant cover for THE FLASH #6

Paving the way for the return of Captain Cold in THE FLASH #7, Mike Choi’s awesome variant cover for THE FLASH #6 depicts a frozen Barry Allen mid-movement. Below, take an exclusive first look for yourself. “THE FLASH is one of my favorite books right now, so it was a real pleasure and honor to get the chance to work on a cover for the title,” Choi exclusively told THE SOURCE. “I'm good friends with both [series writers and artists] Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato, whom I've known pretty much my entire career, my first professional gig being the follow-up to Francis' run on WITCHBLADE for Top Cow, with Brian being my colorist on the book, so of course this was a title I was definitely rooting for. Hopefully I've done just a little bit to add something to their book and its run. “Another incentive to try and do a great job on the cover was working with Brian Cunningham, who's an editor I've been really enjoying working with. I've come to really appreciate editors who are very straightforward with constructive criticism when it comes to improving your craft on longer and more general terms, because they've seen it all and probably know best in terms of how your stuff might be lacking or need improvement. From the get-go, he told me to try and infuse more dynamism to my figure work by looking at artists like John Buscema and Wally Wood, and hopefully that's coming through bit by bit as my career progresses. “Anyway, I hope everyone digs it!” THE FLASH #6goes on sale February 22nd.
