Grant Morrison on his Legendary BATMAN Run

"Little did I suspect when I accepted the BATMAN writing assignment back in 2006 that I’d wind up spending the next six years writing the longest continued comic story I’ve ever attempted. I thought I’d said most of what I had to say about the character with Arkham Asylum, Gothic, and Batman’s appearances in JLA. Clearly, I was wrong.

The original pitch was for 15 issues winding up with BATMAN R.I.P. but something happened along the way and, as I was researching his rich history, I became fascinated by the idea that every Batman story was in some way true and biographical - from the savage, young, pulp-flavored “weird figure of the dark” of his early years, through the smiling, paternal figure of the 1940s and the proto-psychedelic crusader of the ‘50s, the superhero detective of the ‘60s, the hairy-chested globetrotting adventurer of the ‘70s, to the brutally physical vigilante of the ‘80s and snarling, paranoid soldier of the ‘90s.

By taking his entire publishing history as the story of his life, I was able to approach Batman from a different angle and the multifaceted character that was revealed became the subject of my story.

What would such a man be like, realistically? This was a man who had saved countless lives, faced innumerable perils, and even prevented the destruction of the world itself. This was a master of martial arts, meditation, deduction, yoga and big business. This was a man who had tamed and mastered his demons and turned personal tragedy into a relentless humanitarian crusade.

Taking that man seriously meant I had to throw out a few of the accepted ideas about Batman as a semi-unhinged, essentially humorless loner struggling with rage and guilt. The totality of his history and accomplishments made that portrayal seem limited and unconvincing, so instead, my Batman was a true superhero at the height of his powers and the peak of his abilities, surrounded by a network of friends and associates, all of whom had been inspired by his lead.

I chose to build my story around the basic trauma, the murder of his parents, that lies at the heart of Batman’s genesis. It seemed to me there would be a part of Bruce Wayne that resented his parents for leaving him and especially resented his father for not being Batman that night, so the principal villains were an archetypal bad father figure in the form of Dr. Hurt and a dark mother in the form of Talia, our villain for the concluding chapters of the story.

This master theme of damaged and ruined families was nowhere more in evidence than in the creation of Damian, the first “Son of Batman” to be acknowledged in the canon. In many ways this has been Damian’s story as much as it has been the story of Bruce Wayne and it’s a story that had its end planned a long time ago - for what son could ever hope to replace a father like Batman, who never dies?

And so, via Batman, Batman and Robin, Return of Bruce Wayne and Batman Inc. this epic tale has finally reached its finale.

Thanks to all the artists who helped realise the story – Andy Kubert, JH Williams, John Van Fleet, Tony Daniel, Ryan Benjamin, Lee Garbett, Frank Quitely, Philip Tan, Cameron Stewart, Andy Clarke, Frazer Irving, Scott Kolins, Chris Sprouse, Ryan Sook, Yanick Paquette, Georges Jeanty, David Finch, Scott Clark and of course, Chris Burnham.

Thanks to the inkers, colorists and letters and to my indefatigable editors.

Thanks to the readers who joined in the fun and contributed to the thought-provoking debates and analyses online.

The conclusion is finally here, with only four more issues to go. Four issues which take Batman to dark places he has never had to visit before. Four issues and I’m done, while Batman himself continues into as yet unimagined future adventures. He’ll still be here long after I’m dead and forgotten; long after all of us have come and gone, there will be Batman. It’s been a joy and a privilege to spend so much time in the company of pop culture’s greatest character but it’s going to feel weird waking up and not having Bruce Wayne’s calm, commanding, ever-so-slightly cynical voice in my head.

Batman forever…

This Just Happened: Superman Watches The Destruction of Krypton

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read ACTION COMICS #14 yet and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoiler alerts ahead!).

A few weeks back, we teased that ACTION COMICS #14 would feature a game-changing back-up story. Well if you picked up the issue when it hit stores this past Wednesday, you now know exactly what we were talking about!

From the creative team of writer Sholly Fisch and artists Chris Sprouse and Karl Story, “Star Light, Star Bright…” changes the history of Superman forever. Fans finally found out why Superman was making regular trips to a particular planetarium located in New York City: to locate his home planet of Krypton. And helping him? Real-life world-renowned astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

In “Star Light, Star Bright…” Superman visits the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium to see Dr. Tyson. In a room full of his colleagues, Tyson focuses telescopes from all over the world on the Corvus constellation. One particular star in this constellation, LHS 2520, holds special meaning for Superman. This star is Krypton’s red sun, Rao.

The data from all of the telescopes are integrated and assembled by Superman to create images of Rao and Krypton. The images of Krypton’s tragic death have just reached the Earth, twenty-seven years after the event. Surrounded by astrophysicists, Superman witnesses the destruction of his home planet. In other words, Krypton was located on its final day of existence.

"This is a major milestone in the Superman mythos that gives our Super Hero a place in the universe,” DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio said in a press release earlier this week. "Having Neil deGrasse Tyson in the book was one thing, but by applying real world science to this story he has forever changed Superman’s place in history. Now fans will be able to look up at the night’s sky and say – ‘that’s where Superman was born’."

Below, take a look at a page from “Star Light, Star Bright …” as Krypton is located and the Man of Steel witnesses its destruction. And don’t forget to pick up your copy of ACTION COMICS #14, in stores now!

DC COMICS AND NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON PUT KRYPTON ON THE MAP WITH HISTORIC SUPERMAN STORY

World Renowned Astrophysicist Makes Guest Appearance In ACTION COMICS #14 And Helps Pinpoint Icon’s Home Planet In Our Known Universe

BURBANK, Calif. (November 5, 2012) – Fact and fiction merge in the newest issue of DC Comics’ ACTION COMICS #14, bringing real world implications to the iconic Superman story. In the explosive back-up story for ACTION COMICS #14 titled “Star Light, Star Bright”, world-renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson helps Superman find his home planet of Krypton on its final day of existence. Today, Dr. Tyson announces an actual location for a Krypton-like system in our known universe. ACTION COMICS #14 hits stores on November 7.

"This is a major milestone in the Superman mythos that gives our Super Hero a place in the universe,” said DC Entertainment co-publisher, Dan DiDio. "Having Neil deGrasse Tyson in the book was one thing, but by applying real world science to this story he has forever changed Superman’s place in history. Now fans will be able to look up at the night’s sky and say – ‘that’s where Superman was born’."

The red dwarf star designated for having the ability to support a Krypton-like planet is located in the constellation Corvus 27.1 light years from Earth. The star, designated LHS 2520, possesses a red, highly turbulent surface, somewhat cooler and smaller than the Sun. To find it in the night’s sky, amateur astronomers and Superman fans can follow these coordinates:

J2000

Right Ascension: 12 hours 10 minutes 5.77 seconds

Declination:  -15 degrees 4 minutes 17.9 seconds

Proper Motion: 0.76 arcseconds per year, along 172.94 degrees from due north

Dr. Tyson has a well-documented history applying science to entertainment in order to make the subject accessible and exciting to the public. He is the Director of Hayden Planetarium at the AmericanMuseum of Natural History, which since its founding in 1935 has served as the premier conduit between the frontier of cosmic discovery and the public's appreciation of it.  Tyson also recently made headlines by getting film director, James Cameron, to alter the night’s sky as seen in The Titanic due to inaccuracies. The adjustment was made and can be seen in the re-release of Titanic 3-D.

Tyson noted, “As a native of Metropolis, I was delighted to help Superman, who has done so much for my city over all these years.  And it’s clear that if he weren’t a superhero he would have made quite an astrophysicist.”

“Star Light, Star Bright” is written by Sholly Fisch, a veteran in the educational media field and longtime comic book writer. Fisch and DC Comics editor Wil Moss collaborated with Dr. Tyson on the creation of this epic tale and its real world applications. The story is supported by the stellar art team of Chris Sprouse and Karl Story. “Star Light, Star Bright” appears at the end of ACTION COMICS #14, which features a lead story  penned by comic book industry superstar Grant Morrison with art by Rags Morales and Mark Propst.

ACTION COMICS #14 To Feature A Game-Changing Back-Up Story

Next month, Superman fans will witness an explosive and defining revelation in “Star Light, Star Bright…,” the back-up story in ACTION COMICS #14.

Regular ACTION COMICS back-up writer Sholly Fisch welcomes aboard the stellar art team of Chris Sprouse and Karl Story for a tale that finds the Man of Steel making a mysterious trip to an observatory. But why is he there? Why would someone so well versed in other planets need the help of an observatory? We asked the back-up story’s editor Wil Moss to give us a clue as to what Superman is up to. Take it away, Wil!

“The back-up in ACTION COMICS #14 is a really terrific little story, but we can’t tell you much about it yet,” Moss teased. “All we can say is that it’s IMPORTANT! Historic, even! Superman has been making these regular trips to an observatory. But why? What is he searching for? Find out this November … and wait’ll you see who’s helping him!”

Place your bets in the comments section below about what you think Superman is looking for, and don’t forget to pick up ACTION COMICS #14 when it flies into stores on November 7th.

Chris Sprouse on The Return of Bruce Wayne

[Note: To celebrate the release of BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE DELUXE EDITION – now available in comic shops and book stores everywhere – we’ve asked the artists on each chapter to give us a few words on what it was like to work with Grant Morrison to adapt one of the world’s greatest superheroes to different periods of history. Keep watching The Source throughout the day for more from these spectacular artists!]

robw-issue1-page26-outtake-copy

Chris Sprouse, artist on THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, PART I: SHADOW ON STONE:

"This was one of the most unusual projects I've drawn. It was quite a challenge drawing a Batman story where almost everything visual about the character as we know him is missing. Therefore my main goal while drawing my chapter was to make Bruce Wayne stand and move and act like Batman even while out of his normal costume. I wanted readers to know that this was without a doubt the man under that mask and cape. When he finally dons the giant bat-hide, it had to be as creepy as possible--I wanted to play up that that Bruce was absolutely terrifying the cowardly and superstitious cavemen! I went a lot darker than I usually do, and the results pleased even me most of the time (not a common occurrence, as I'm my own harshest critic). I can only hope it all worked for Grant and the readers!"

DC NATION: Wil Moss on T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS

thunderag1page30-color

Wil Moss here, editor of the new T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS comic. Now, I know there are a lot of great DC titles right now competing for your dollar, so why should you check out next week’s T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1? Lemme give you some reasons…

• It’s got a terrific hook. Would you rather burn out or fade away? That’s the question at the heart of this series. People at the end of their rope are offered a chance to become super-heroes, but the powers they’re offered will end up killing them. The concept’s been explored before, sure, but this series offers a unique take on it, and the concept actually comes from the original T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS comic anyway. Which brings me to my next reason …

• It celebrates the past while living fully in the present. You don’t need to know a thing about the original T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS comic -- created in the 1960s by the legendary Wally Wood -- to enjoy this new version. This is a new cast and a clean entrance to the concept. But if you’re a fan of the old series, know that this book actually takes place in the same continuity as the original! (And if you’re curious about the classic material, check out the DC COMICS PRESENTS: T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1 reprint edition next month!)

• It’s written by the ingenious Nick Spencer. You know him from the JIMMY OLSEN co-feature and seemingly about a million other projects (including a no-nonsense run on SUPERGIRL that starts in January!). Now’s your chance to see him flex a completely different set of muscles in this world of espionage, morally gray conflicts, twists, and, of course, superpowers. You’ll be shocked by the stuff Nick has planned for this book!

• It’s drawn by one of the industry’s best-kept secrets, CAFU. As you can see from the art on this page, CAFU is an extremely talented up-and-comer, one who is just as comfortable drawing quiet moments of treachery and duplicity as he is drawing bombastic moments of action and mayhem. Mark my words, this guy’s gonna be a star -- get in on the ground floor here!

• It’s got an all-star lineup of cover artists and guest interior artists. #1 sports a cover by Frank Quitely and a variant by Darwyn Cooke (featuring the classic team!), #2 has a cover by Gary Frank and a sequence illustrated by ChrisCross, #3’s got a cover by Chris Sprouse and a sequence by Howard Chaykin, and I’m not even gonna tell you which stellar artist has agreed to close out the first arc with #6, or the name of the amazingly gifted artist who just agreed to do the covers for #7-12 -- an editor’s got to have his secrets!

• It’s is the first great comic of 2011. And you get to read it two months early!

Still not sold? Then check out a free 10-page preview available now via the DC Comics App or through Comixology.com and see for yourself what an amazing book this is gonna be!

In the meantime, I’ll go back to trying to memorize what T.H.U.N.D.E.R. stands for …
