FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “It’s about not being afraid of change.”

flashpoint-logo_whiteAfter a savage attack on his company that left him as a sole survivor, Oliver Queen is haunted by the final words of Roy, one of his closest friends: “You have it in you to do something inspiring, Ollie, and I’m going to watch you do it.”

While he seeks out a mysterious female raider he caught on camera during the attack, Oliver can’t help but wonder about the potential of his Green Arrow Industries. Can he fulfill Roy’s dreams of turning his corporation itself into a superhero? What would it take for a big business to not only fight for people but also inspire them?

“One of the (many, many, MANY) cool things Geoff has going on in FLASHPOINT is that for all the epic superhero moments, at its heart is a story about people dealing with change,” said Pornsak Pichetshote. “And, I don’t know, it seems like that’s the undercurrent of every major news story right now. Plus, from his hard-hitting heroes days, hasn’t Green Arrow had its roots in using cool superhero action to comment on the world? So why not keep that tradition going in a story that involves blood, super-weapons and archery?”

FLASHPOINT: GREEN ARROW INDUSTRIES is written by Pornsak Pichetshote and features art by Marco Castiello, Ig Guara, Vincenzo Acunzo, and Ruy Jose, and arrives in stores next week. Head over to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES to view exclusive preview pages.

Dan DiDio and Keith Giffen talk O.M.A.C.

Cover2

This September, Dan DiDio and Keith Giffen reunite for O.M.A.C. This new series tells the story of Kevin Kho’s transformation into a One Machine Army Corp, an unwilling participant in a brutal war. NEWSARAMA and COMIC BOOK RESOURCES have the first interviews about the book.

So who is this new character, Kevin Kho, and what can we expect from his story?

“It's really about a person who lives his life under a lot of control and is used to being able to have things in a very orderly fashion. Enter into his life ‘OMAC’ and the events that occur, and basically, he loses control of his own life. A lot of the story is about his struggle to regain control, to re-establish himself as an individual again, as other events are pressing against him,” DiDio told COMIC BOOK RESOURCES.

“The first issue introduces O.M.A.C. and the circumstances he's in now. But we'll get some flashbacks to his life before he was O.M.A.C. in the first issue, and you'll see that there's nothing about this guy that makes you think he's going to be a superhero. He's just an ordinary guy named Kevin Kho. He's an adopted Cambodian orphan, but he's not a black-belt or anything like that,” Giffen said to NEWSARAMA.

Be sure to check out both NEWSARMA and COMIC BOOK RESOURCES for full coverage as well as exclusive first looks at the interior art for O.M.A.C. #1.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: Lois' Mission Revealed

flashpoint-logo_whiteWith preparations for a massive world war underway, reporter Lois Lane finds herself to be among the sole survivors of one of Emperor Aquaman’s city-demolishing attacks. As a result, she’s forced into an Amazonian holding camp on New Themyscira to train to fight against the Atlanteans. But a concealed device from a fallen ally reveals that Lois’ fate may not be on the battlefield after all …

“Lois is a great character – one of the rare iconic characters in comics who have no powers. This series makes her the eyes on the ground in the middle of war between SUPER superpowers,” writer Dan Abnett told us. “Should a reporter cross the line and get involved the story? And if they do, can they make a real difference when the other players are demi-god superheroes?”

Head over to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES to view exclusive preview pages. LOIS LANE AND THE RESISTANCE #1 is written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning and features art by Eddie Nunez and Don Ho.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: From The Editor’s Desk: Eddie Berganza on EMPEROR AQUAMAN #1 Cover

flashpoint_fri_white

Earlier today, I gave you a step-by-step visual rundown of how a script page turns into a final piece of art. Now I want to show you two more process pieces by breaking out a couple covers. Let’s start with the cover to FLASHPOINT: EMPEROR AQUAMAN #1 – the same issue I gave you a sneak peek of this morning.

Covers tend to be tricky because not only does the artist need to capture the essence and themes of the whole book, but they also have to be careful not to reveal any spoilers. For these reasons, FLASHPOINT: EMPEROR AQUAMAN #1 is the perfect example of a successful cover. Looking at it, you certainly don’t get the impression that Aquaman is, to put it lightly, the nicest guy. He’s a warrior – one with attitude. He towers over a scene of destruction with his trident glimmering and ready for battle. So while the cover does not reveal any plot-specific spoilers, the overall feel of the book is made very evident upon first glance at it.

1. It all starts with a rough sketch based on brainstorming ideas about what the cover could look like.

fp_ea1_cover_sketch

2. Next, penciller Ardian Syaf takes this sketch and provides more detail and context.

fp_ea1_cover_pencils

3. Vicente Cifuentes then expertly layers on his inks.

fp_ea1_cover_inks

4. And to conclude the process, Kyle Ritter fills in the inks with eye-popping colors.

Pretty cool stuff, right?

Tons and tons of work goes into this process. This is world-building one page at a time. Head on over to Comic Book Resources for two exclusive interviews with FLASHPOINT creators Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning and Scott Snyder & Lowell Francis for a more in depth breakdown of these processes (and for some sneak peeks at the FLASHPOINT titles they’re working on).
