(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC Comics-The New 52, Tuesday Afternoon (ET) Edition

With the second full week of releases of DC Comics-The New 52 coming out tomorrow, more and more previews continue to roll out.

TV GUIDE MAGAZINE has the first exclusive look at SUICIDE SQUAD #1. “Espionage is not pretty, it's not martinis and tuxedos, it's usually down and dirty,” series writer Adam Glass (Supernatural) told them.

COMICS ALLIANCE debuted a 5-page sequence from BIRDS OF PREY #1 by Duane Swierczynski and Jesus Saiz (and in case you missed it last week, be sure to read Editor Janelle Asselin’s blog post on what to expect from the series).

NEWSARAMA has the exclusive preview of DEATHSTROKE #1 by Kyle Higgins, Joe Bennett and Art Thibert.

IGN continued their series of interviews with the writers and artists of all the books in DC Comics-The New 52. “Slade is a strategist—he's two, sometimes three steps ahead in a fight,” Kyle Higgins said when asked about DEATHSTROKE.

“The first thing we do is show that Batwoman just wants to be the good soldier of Gotham,” described BATWOMAN writer/artist J.H. Williams III told IGN. “She’s going after crimes and villains that really don't connect to her personal story, but they quickly become personal for her mission.”

“One of the primary aspects of his character that makes him so appealing and compelling is that he makes mistakes - big, huge messes in his life, and yet he keeps going on,” GREEN ARROW writer J.T. Krul said about the series’ protagonist to IGN. “He doesn't make excuses for himself; he doesn't pass the buck - Oliver Queen freely and wholeheartedly puts the blame on his shoulders and carries the weight day in and day out.”

NEWSARAMA also debuted the cover to DETECTIVE COMICS #4. Meanwhile, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES has the first look at the cover for ACTION COMICS #4 and WORD BALLOON premiered the cover to GREEN LANTERN #4.

Comics Alliance looks at Batwing, the Batman of Africa

One of the exciting Batman stories being told right now is the global proliferation of superheroes in BATMAN INCORPORATED. Bruce Wayne's enlisted the help of costumed crime fighters from around the world to enforce his brand of justice and prepare for a mysterious new enemy only known as Leviathan.

Grant Morrison talks RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE and BATMAN REBORN

It's a bountiful time for fans of Grant Morrison's BATMAN work, with the first collection of BATMAN AND ROBIN on shelves and the first issue of BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE speeding toward comic shops. So, a perfect time to check a few lengthy and interesting Grant interviews, no? Of course.

Morrison made the rounds in the last few days, chatting with io9, Topless Robot, MTV SPLASH PAGE and AOL's COMICS ALLIANCE, covering a ton of ground and focused on his BATMAN work -- past and present. Take a few minutes to catch up and stay tuned to The Source for more Grant Morrison news.

That was some big news on Monday, eh?

And with big news comes big reaction, with a number of outlets picking up on the fact that JMS will be writing SUPERMAN and WONDER WOMAN in July and commenting on his excellent essay, posted later in the day Monday.

Bryan Young, writing at THE HUFFINGTON POST, summed things up nicely: "I can't wait to see what he'll do." Same here, Bryan.

A few links of note for Monday

What, news happens after San Diego? Believe it or not, the answer is yes. And because I know you're surfing the web for anything that'd help distract from the fact that today is indeed Monday, here are two things well worth your time.

• THE NEW YORK TIMES has an excellent review of Neil Gaiman and Andy Kubert's WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE CAPED CRUSADER? collection. Here's an excerpt:

“Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?” has morbid moments, but also bittersweet passages. Its title story, written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Andy Kubert, imagines several variations of Batman’s death. This anthology, published by DC Comics, also includes other stories by Mr. Gaiman about the millionaire Bruce Wayne’s famous alter ego. The other tales are very good, but “Whatever Happened to ...” packs enough emotional punch to stand solo.

• COMICS ALLIANCE's Laura Hudson catches up with Blair Butler, who we recently announced would be gracing the cover to BOOSTER GOLD #23. Another sampling, because we're nice like that:

ComicsAlliance: So, how did the whole "Booster Gold" cover with DC come about?

Blair Butler: I actually got a call from Dan DiDio who said he had a crazy idea for an upcoming issue of "Booster Gold." Basically – and forgive me, because my memory sucks and I'm still recovering from Comic-Con – I recall that he said DC wanted to do a cover that sort of stood out for #23, and having a photo cover with a Booster fan was the main idea. It seemed oddly appropriate, since Booster is a bit of an attention hog. I think he'd not-so-secretly love the idea of having a lady-fan on the cover of his book. And, honestly, I was incredibly humbled that DC would ask me to don the Blue and Gold fan colors. I've loved comics since I had to stand on a stool to reach the quarter-bins at my local comic shop, so it's pretty awesome to get to be part of a DC comic.

Haven't headed over to the comic shop yet? To whet your appetite, USA TODAY has the first installment of John Arcudi and artist Lee Bermejo's SUPERMAN -- both in today's print edition and online. USA TODAY will continue to serialize the strip weekly on their site.

Still on the fence? Well, first off -- shame on you. Who can resist a weekly series that features the talents of Neil Gaiman, Brian Azzarello, Mike Allred, Karl Kerschl, Joe Kubert, Walt Simonson, Dave Gibbons, Kyle Baker, Kurt Busiek, Amanda Connor...to name a few? But because we're all about doing our due diligence here, why not peruse THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS' piece on the title and Dan DiDio's interview with THE CLEVELAND PLAIN-DEALER? Or THE TOLEDO FREE PRESS's feature on the weekly series?

More? Ok. Well, both PUBLISHERS WEEKLY COMICS WEEK and THE HONOLULU STAR-BULLETIN chatted up WEDNESDAY COMICS mastermind Mark Chiarello, who's the man responsible for gathering such an impressive lineup of A-list talent.

Dan DiDio talks Batman with COMICS ALLIANCE and a few more links of note

Over at AOL/Asylum's COMICS ALLIANCE site, our own Dan DiDio takes a moment to chat with CA's Laura Hudson about how the Batman universe will be shaping up post-BATTLE FOR THE COWL.

ComicsAlliance: What's been the reaction to the recent revelation that Dick Grayson, the original Robin, is now the new Batman?

Dan DiDio: We had a lot of speculation about who was going to be the new Batman, and one of the things that I found most surprising was that most people were trying to guess in a different direction. But from our standpoint, we were always pretty locked in on the fact that Dick Grayson was going to be the new Batman... the legacy aspect plays into everything that makes DC great, where we have so many characters that have moved from one generation to another. People have become very invested in [Dick Grayson] character over the years, and interested to see how he accepts the mantle.

• THE NASHUA TELEGRAPH had kind words for the FINAL CRISIS hardcover.

• Speaking of Grant Morrison and Batman, the writer talks to NEWSARAMA's Zack Smith about BATMAN AND ROBIN and his plans for the Caped Crusader.

• And, speaking of BATMAN AND ROBIN, IGN has a nice review of the first issue, where they call the book "an outrageously fun start for this new series. "
