Dynamite Entertainment and many more

The Program Includes the Option to Sign up for the DC Comics Exclusive Stand Alone Store

New York, NY [03/17/11] – From Metropolis to Gotham City, retailers everywhere will be able to sell digital comics from DC Comics through comiXology’s recently announced Digital Storefront Affiliate program, an initiative focused on empowering merchants to thrive in the digital marketplace. In addition, Image Comics (including Shadowline and Top Cow), BOOM! Publishers who are participating in the program will gain additional distribution channels on the Web while also strengthening their bonds with comic stores. BATMAN 101

batman_728x276

The next two weeks are going to be chock full of news, with THE SOURCE providing a glimpse of the DCU in 2011 and GRAPHIC CONTENT teasing highlights from Vertigo in 2011. Expect high profile announcements, exclusive previews and some definite surprises along the way. We think it’s a great way to kick off the New Year right—and to thank you, the fans, for the enthusiasm and passion you have for our creators, our characters and the books we publish.

And it all starts today with BATMAN 101.

It’s simple, really: 101 issues of Batman on sale today, 1/01/11.

For one day, you could download issues #600-700 available for $.99 each at the DC Comics Digital Store, the DC Comics App, and the ComiXology App. BATMAN 101 provides a crash course in some of the greatest Batman stories ever published: “Hush”, “Broken City”, “Under the Red Hood”, “Batman and Son”, and “BATMAN: R.I.P.” to name a few. That means stories by amazing creators like Brian Azzarello, Tony S. Daniel, Geoff Johns, Andy Kubert, Jim Lee, Jeph Loeb, Grant Morrison, Dustin Nguyen, Eduardo Risso, James Robinson, Bill Willingham and Judd Winick.

Some of you might remember our “Blackest Friday” sale. That promotion proved so popular that Hank Kanalz and our digital team wanted to kick off 2011 with another fun promotion. And just like with “Blackest Friday”, these issues will return to their regular price point tomorrow. So start downloading now, because the sale ends at 11 PM Eastern Standard Time. Then come back to THE SOURCE on Monday for a look at what the future holds for the DCU in 2011.

Happy New Year, SOURCE readers.

Celebrate ‘Black Friday’ by revisiting the DCU’s BLACKEST NIGHT

Layout 1

As most skilled shoppers know, the day after Thanksgiving is “Black Friday,” because it’s a day of deals, bargains and – well, let’s not sugarcoat it – pure, unbridled shopping frenzy. But why get elbowed and shoved by zombie-like shoppers at the mall when you can stock up on some essential comic book reading from the comforts of your own home? I guess you could call this the DC Digital Store’s very own “Blackest Friday.”

For 24 hours, starting now (midnight EST), you can snag every chapter of the NEW YORK TIMES-bestselling BLACKEST NIGHT series, from writer Geoff Johns and artist Ivan Reis for $.99 each at the DC Digital Comics Store and via the DC Comics App and the Comixology App (both available via iTunes). After this “Blackest Friday” deal, though, prices will return to our standard $1.99 and $2.99 price point.

This is a rare chance to get the epic, universe-altering series from Johns and Reis at such a bargain price. And it’s essential reading. Not only is BLACKEST NIGHT a superhero romp of the highest caliber, it’s a story that pits the heroes of the DC Universe against former friends, lovers and foes, as the dead rise to destroy everything that surrounds them. Can Green Lantern, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Flash band together to stop the swarms of Black Lanterns from dragging the entire universe into a new Dark Age?

What better time to find out? Make sure you get in on this amazing offer while it lasts and read some of the best, most compelling comics in recent memory for an unheard-of price.

DC Digital Comics Store

cx_dcGot some amazingly exciting news to launch this week off with.  Yeah, I count Wednesday as the beginning of the week as it’s New Comic Book Day!  (It’s the same way the New Comics Year ends and starts again with every San Diego Comic Con in July).  So every Wednesday, I actually am now in the habit of checking for both new print and digital releases and sure enough, we’ve got some downloadable gems this week.  In fact, we’re rolling out Frank Miller’s seminal work , The Dark Knight Returns. This is the book that brought me back into comics when I was in college and truly inspired me to become a comic book illustrator and is a must have for every Comics Cognoscenti.

What makes it even more special is that we are offering it up through our very own DC Digital Comics Store!

Yep, you heard that right.  We’re thrilled today to announce the opening of our brand new DC Comics storefront.  What does the latest development to our ongoing Digital Publishing Initiative mean for you, the ever-devout DC Comics fan?  Well, for one--it’s going to allow you all the ability to purchase and download comics from your desktop and laptop computers from our very own website.  And because we want to make the purchasing, storage and management of your comics digital library as easy and convenient as possible, we’ve made sure that our storefront is powered by comiXology which means if you buy a DC digital comic like the chart-busting Death of Superman on your Mac or PC at home, you can read the very same series on-the-go using your iPhone, iPad or laptop using our DC App without paying any a penny more or creating any new logins.  Or vice versa.

We call it convergence.  You will find it simply easy.

And you know what? Given the proliferation of digital comics apps, mobile devices and platforms, I know as a consumer of digital comics that I appreciate that kind of convenience.  And as a Co-Publisher who finds time to catch up on his comics reading while on-the-go, I love the fact that I can carry around not just the latest digital issue of The Authority, one of my favorite all time comics, but my entire DC digital collection on any one of the devices I schlep with me to the far corners of the earth.  And we’ve made many of the first issues of these great series free in commemoration of today’s news.

So check out what’s available for download this week--we run the gamut from Vertigo’s ground-breaking Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson to Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles to the DCU’s outstanding Identity Crisis series by novelist Brad Meltzer and artist Rags Morales.  It really is an embarrassment of riches and honestly, we have many, many internal discussions about what we should be rolling out next...should it be material from our classic archives or more recent tales of our iconic characters or the works of DC’s greatest creators? In cases such as writer Brian Azzarello who’s best known for his riveting Vertigo opus 100 Bullets but also for his poignant take on the Man of Steel in Superman: For Tomorrow, we couldn’t choose between the two and ran with both to celebrate the launching of our new storefront.  But please, sound off on our Facebook page and be heard—at the end of the day, we really do strive to make the DC Digital Offerings reflect not just the very best works of DC Comics but what YOU, the reader, wants out of very your own DC Digital Comics Experience!
