5.2 Reasons DC Entertainment is the Place to Be for SDCC

San Diego Comic-Con is upon us! It's a celebration of all things great—from comic books and movies to toys and video games and everything in between—but for comic fans especially, it's the chance to meet the makers, get access to exclusive items, and discover the latest news and announcements concerning your favorite heroes and titles. It's absolutely fan-tasmic! That's a word, right? That should be a word.

Not everyone can make it to this sold-out event. But worry not because DC Entertainment has you covered with nonstop Comic-Con coverage right here on DCComics.com—your "Con Away from Con!"

Whether braving the crowds in San Diego or enjoying it from home, we're giving you 5.2 Reasons DC Entertainment is the Place to Be for SDCC!

1. Exclusive Panel Coverage

One of the biggest draws of Comic-Con is the panels—like this year's Batman: Beyond the Night of the Owls panel or the Justice League and Green Lantern panel. Fans and creators alike gather to discuss what's currently happening and what's still to come in the DCU. And you can keep up-to-date on what's going on in almost every single one of them with LIVE panel coverage here in THE SOURCE. Even better, as the official DC recap, all of our panel coverage will include every photograph, piece of art or image shown during our panels!

2. #AskDCComics Fan Questions

Have you always wanted to ask Geoff Johns a question but haven't gotten the chance? Well, we're giving you that opportunity—and you don’t have to be at the show to take advantage. Throughout Comic-Con, we'll be conducting interviews with various creators—and we'll be asking them YOUR questions! Follow us on Twitter (@DCComics) for updates on who we'll be interviewing throughout the show and use #AskDCComics to tweet us your questions!

3. DC University

For the very first time, we’ll be hosting some special interviews with our artists in the DC Entertainment Booth (#1915). They'll be taking suggestions from the audience on what to draw while fielding questions on their latest projects, their favorite characters and much more! If you're at the show, keep your eye to the booth stage where these interviews will be taking place. If not, no problem! We'll be filming and posting them onto the site.

4. The Instant Super Fan Sweepstakes

Everyone loves swag. But getting said swag can be a little difficult. To make things easier and awesomer, we're holding a special sweepstakes open to both attendees and those at home via e-mail entry where the winner receives a collection of all of the best DC products, exclusives and giveaways from Comic-Con. Click here for everything you need to know about becoming an instant super fan.

5. 5.2 Questions

Our Comic-Con sister feature! Creators answer 5.2 Questions (natch)—but unlike DC University and our Twitter-fueled interviews, these questions are fun, informal and designed to shed some light on what sort of things your favorite writers and artists enjoy. Find out what Jim Lee's favorite late night snack is or Scott Snyder's first-ever comic book purchase!

Exclusive DC Dog Plushes – Free at Comic-Con!

For those of you who feel guilty about leaving your dog at home while you head to San Diego for Comic-Con, we think we might have just the thing to help.

DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Consumer Products have partnered with Fetch…for pets! to produce a line of unique DC super hero-themed pet products which will be available at Petco stores in the fall. However, if you’re going to Comic-Con, you won’t have to wait till then to unleash your dog’s inner geek…

Say hello to the special San Diego Comic-Con edition dog plushes! These one-of-a-kind chew toys are dressed to impress and absolutely FREE during Comic-Con weekend. We’ll randomly be giving away a limited number of these adorable dog toys at the Warner Bros. booth (#4545), Friday through Sunday. If your dog is a really big DC fan, then you’re going to want to collect all three. And if one of them happens to wind up on your collectibles shelf rather than on your dog’s bed…well, we won’t say a word.

Don’t miss out! They’re cute, cuddly and the only Comic-Con souvenir that’s guaranteed to get your dog as passionate about DC comic books as you are!

SDCC Survival Tip #3: Set Up a Strategy

This is it. One more day until the official start of Comic-Con. As you read this, thousands of comic book professionals and fans the world over are boarding flights heading in to San Diego. They’re locking down signing schedules and confirming dinner reservations. Why? Well, if you’ve been to Comic-Con before, you know preparation is key. And the heart of preparing for Comic-Con is to have some sort of strategy.

There’s a reason why so many people love Comic-Con. It really does have something for everyone. However, because of that, it can all feel very overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you’ve never been to Comic-Con before, let us offer you one final suggestion: Decide right now what you want to get out of it. Are you going to Comic-Con primarily because you want to get sketches from all of your favorite comic book artists? Are you heading to San Diego because you want to check out never-before-seen trailers and clips from some of the biggest upcoming movies? Is your goal to snag the best free swag available on the show floor? Are you an aspiring comic book writer, looking to find an artist to collaborate with?

It may be one of the above goals, or something entirely different. But regardless, the difference between a successful Comic-Con experience and a frustrating one will be staying committed to it. For example, some of the best swag actually requires some action on your part—often a scavenger hunt or completing some objective. That takes time, which you’re not going to have if you’re spending most of the convention sitting in portfolio review lines. Decide on your top two or three goals for this trip and make those your focus. Everything else you happen to have time for is just gravy.

Of course, regardless of what that strategy is, we hope you’ll swing by the DC booth. We’ll have swag. We’ll have nonstop creator signings. We’ll have some of our best artists drawing live in our booth while fielding your questions. We’ll have portfolio reviews and panels. Props and costumes from DC movies and TV shows. Art from MAD Magazine. And much, much more.

And if you’re not going to be in San Diego, we’ll be bringing the best of the con to you right here on DCComics.com, so check back all throughout the weekend. After all, it’s Comic-Con—you never know what you might see!

SDCC Survival Tip #2: Planning Out Your Panels

Yesterday, we covered getting around when you leave the convention center. Today, we’re staying right where all the action is and discussing the best way to catch all of the panels you want to see.

Obviously, you should start by checking the programming schedule. If you have, it’s a fair bet that some panels you’d like to see are scheduled at the same time as others you’d like to see. If there are conflicts, our advice is don’t try to resolve them now. More often than not, these things tend to resolve themselves organically during the con. Maybe one of the two conflicting panels is nearby when it’s time to head up and the other is all the way on the other side of the show. Maybe you get word that a special, unexpected guest will be appearing on one of them, which tips the scales for you. The bottom line is that it’s not worth stressing over now.

Even without any conflicts, it’s not always easy to make all of the panels you want to make, especially when some of them are in Hall H. The lines for most Hall H panels get big enough to be seen from outer space. (All right, we did just make that up on the spot, but it feels about right when you find yourself at the end of a Hall H line.) If there’s a panel you want to see in Hall H on a given day, you may want to consider getting there first thing in the morning—even if the panel’s at night. Don’t forget, they don’t clear out the rooms in between panels, so once you’re in the panel room you want to be in, you can stay as long as you’d like.

Of course, if you aren’t able to get into Hall H, or just don’t want to deal with the line, there are plenty of smaller panels taking place at the same time. Many of these provide a great opportunity to meet and interact with industry talent. After all, with Comic-Con getting larger and panel rooms at a premium, there are some pretty high-interest panels being held in smaller rooms. There’s little that can compare to seeing one of your favorite artists, writers or celebrities in an intimate setting, so look for those opportunities and again…arrive early!

Finally, be sure to check out San Diego Comic-Con’s website for their rules about attending programming. You need to know them.

Speaking of panels, DC has a full slate of programming scheduled for Comic-Con, with over 20 panels planned over all four days. Check your panel guide for listings, and if you miss a panel—or just aren’t going to be at the show—don’t forget that we’ll be covering most DC, Vertigo and MAD panels live on our websites. That includes all images and art shown during the panel. If you can’t be there, there’s simply no better place to experience a DC panel than on DCComics.com.

One more day to the official start of Comic-Con. That means we have one more tip remaining. Check back tomorrow to see what it is!

SDCC Survival Tip #1: Getting Around

Comic-Con is now only three days away (or two if you count preview night), and as survivors of many SDCCs past, we thought we’d help prepare those of you who are going for the first time by putting together a few Comic-Con Survival Tips. Comic-Con can be loads of fun and an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your lives, but it can also be overwhelming and many people spend an entire day just getting acclimated to the sheer scope of the show.

Well, as a DC fan, you deserve better than that, and so we’re going to do our best over the next three days to prepare you for what awaits you in San Diego. With a little luck, you’ll hit the convention floor running and ready to grab some of that great Comic-Con swag.

By the way, when we say running, we’re speaking figuratively. You don’t want to run around at Comic-Con, it’ll tire you out and it’s possible you’ll set people into a panic when they mistakenly assume you’re running towards something cool. Besides, there are so many other ways to get around while you’re at Comic-Con.

One of the best things about SDCC is that everything you’ll need is pretty much in walking distance. There are plenty of hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, bars, clubs and movie theaters all a short stroll from the convention center. If you do need to go beyond that, the convention shuttles are your best friend. This year they’re running 24 hours for the very first time and stop in over 60 locations. Yes, they’re meant to get attendees from the convention center to their hotels, but those hotels are next to all sorts of great things and a savvy shuttle rider can go hundreds of places without ever having to hail a cab.

Speaking of cabs, they’re around as well, and if you need to get somewhere in a hurry, they’re your best bet (the shuttles are free, but they can take a while). However, if where you’re going is nearby, consider taking a pedicab. They’re all over the place during Comic-Con, can often get you places more quickly than a car and you get to enjoy that great San Diego air!

If you’re a DC fan, you’re going to have plenty of reasons to leave the convention center over the weekend. From the DC-inspired art on display at the Darkness & Light Art Exhibition to the chance to see all six Batmobiles from TV and film at Warner Bros.’ outdoor “Extra” festival, there are plenty of reason to stretch your legs over the weekend.

And we have plenty more to discuss. Check back tomorrow for another SDCC Survival Tip!

Countdown to Comic-Con: Tony S. Daniel on SDCC

Every day until the start of Comic-Con, we’re bringing you something cool to help you count down the days to the start of the big show. Last week we debuted our new Comic-Con print ads. For this week, we reached out to some of our favorite writers and artists to ask them what they enjoy most about San Diego Comic-Con.

Our last Countdown to Comic-Con creator is Tony S. Daniel, the insanely talented writer and artist who recently relaunched Batman: Detective Comics as a part of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52. (The series’ first trade collection is in stores now.) Here are Tony’s thoughts on Comic-Con:

“San Diego Comic-Con is the biggest and greatest show on earth for fans and creators alike. It is the largest, most spectacular round up of the world’s greatest fans and the industry’s greatest talents. They come from all corners of the globe to experience what so many comic book and movie fans have made an annual pilgrimage. If you’re a fan, you’re in absolute science fiction and comic book heaven. If you’re a creator, you can’t help but become energized off of all the sights and sounds of the show. It is such a wonderful experience witnessing all of the excitement and passion from so many people in one giant place. I always leave inspired from looking at all the great art at the show, as well as talking with other artists whose work I admire. It’s the one place where I get to have fun as a professional and as a fan. San Diego Comic-Con is a must do and a must see.”

Tony will be signing in the DC booth and will also be a part of the Batman: Beyond the Night of Owls panel on Thursday, July 12th at 2 p.m. (Room 6DE) and the Drawing DC panel on Friday, July 13th at 3 p.m. (Room 11AB). But if you can’t make Comic-Con, you don’t have to worry about missing out. We’ll be covering DC’s slate of panels live as they take place on DCComics.com.

Next week, we’ll continue our countdown with some Comic-Con Survival Tips, all leading up to the start of our official Con Away From Con coverage on Thursday. See you there!

Countdown to Comic-Con: Jimmy Palmiotti on SDCC

Every day until the start of Comic-Con, we’re bringing you something cool to help you count down the days to the start of the big show. Last week we debuted our new Comic-Con print ads. For this week, we reached out to some of our favorite writers and artists to ask them what they enjoy most about San Diego Comic-Con.

Today’s creator is Jimmy Palmiotti, the always memorable writer and artist who’s been keeping busy by co-writing All-Star Western and G.I. Combat. Here’s Jimmy short and sweet thought on Comic-Con:

“Since I started in the business I have never missed a single SDCC, no matter how busy I am. It’s a celebration of everything I love on a global scale.”

Jimmy will be signing in the DC booth and will be discussing his current projects on the Tales from The Dark and The Edge panel on Thursday, July 12th at 11:30 a.m. (Room 6DE), the DC Entertainment – All Access: DC NOW! panel on Thursday at 3:15 p.m. (also in Room 6DE) and the DC Comics – The New 52 panel on Friday, July 13th at 4:15 p.m. (once again in Room 6DE). We’ll be covering every one of these panels live as they unfold right here on DCComics.com, so don’t miss them. And don’t miss our last creator tomorrow as our Countdown to Comic-Con continues!

Countdown to Comic-Con: Adam Glass on SDCC

Every day until the start of Comic-Con, we’re bringing you something cool to help you count down the days to the start of the big show. Last week we debuted our new Comic-Con print ads. For this week, we reached out to some of our favorite writers and artists to ask them what they enjoy most about San Diego Comic-Con.

Today’s Comic-Con recollection comes care of Adam Glass, who’s been showing us what it’s like to live (extremely) dangerously in the pages of Suicide Squad. Here’s what Adam had to say about Comic-Con:

“1988, fresh from the big apple, I went to San Diego Comic Con with a buddy of mine. It was my first real ‘Fanboy’ experience, though back then I think we were just called ‘nerds.’ Little did the world know we would soon rule it!

But I regress. We'll get back to world domination later.

At the Con, I remember just being blown away by the costumes, art, merchandise and of course the writers and artists. I felt at home amongst the sea of fans who, just like me, dared to dream a little differently and weren’t afraid to express it. It was like the comic book spring break, and I was in awe. Ever since that experience, I can’t wait to go back every year. But now I go with my family and watch my children and others with their eyes wide open as they watch this crazy circus we call Comic-Con. Dreaming of something we haven’t even thought of yet, but will probably see there some day soon...”

Adam will be signing in the DC booth and will be a part of the DC Comics – The New 52 panel on Friday, July 13th at 4:15 p.m. (also in Room 6DE). But don’t sweat it if you can’t be there, because we’ll be covering that panel live as it unfolds right here on DCComics.com. Don’t miss it, and be sure to swing by THE SOURCE again tomorrow for our next Countdown to Comic-Con feature!

Countdown to Comic-Con: Gail Simone on SDCC

Every day until the start of Comic-Con, we’re bringing you something cool to help you count down the days to the start of the big show. Last week we debuted our new Comic-Con print ads. For this week, we reached out to some of our favorite writers and artists to ask them what they enjoy most about San Diego Comic-Con.

Today we’re hearing from Gail Simone, the fan-favorite writer who’s been penning Batgirl’s adventures as a part of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52, and who’s also had ridiculously popular runs on Birds of Prey, Secret Six and Wonder Woman. Here’s what Gail had to say about Comic-Con:

“San Diego Comic-Con was not only the first real convention I ever attended as a guest, it was the first real convention I had ever attended in any capacity. Having SDCC be your introduction to the world of the comic book convention is like using a supernova to toast bread. I can’t even express what a shocking experience it was in all ways. On one side of the massive convention hall, you have fun shops and restaurants and the charming Gaslamp district, on the other side, stunning views of the harbor.

And the hall itself, aisle after aisle of everything I’d always loved but never really gotten to share with others; cosplayers, comics, films, cult TV...there’s a wonderful geek chic about it all, a fantasy glamour, that I still find inspiring to this day. For one long weekend, it’s its own city, a community of believers, people who only came because they love what they love, and this is the place that has it. It’s a party, a concert, a festival, a reunion, a costume ball, and it might also be a little bit of a sanitarium in the best possible way.

Can’t wait to go back. See you there, I hope.”

Gail will be signing in the DC booth and will be a part of the Batman: Beyond the Night of Owls panel on Thursday, July 12th at 2 p.m. (Room 6DE) and the DC Comics – The New 52 panel on Friday, July 13th at 4:15 p.m. (also in Room 6DE). We’ll be covering both of these panels live as they unfold right here on DCComics.com. Don’t miss them, and be sure to swing by THE SOURCE again tomorrow for our next Countdown to Comic-Con feature!

Countdown to Comic-Con: Gregg Hurwitz on SDCC

Every day until the start of Comic-Con, we’re bringing you something cool to help you count down the days to the start of the big show. Last week we debuted our new Comic-Con print ads. For this week, we reached out to some of our favorite writers and artists to ask them what they enjoy most about San Diego Comic-Con.

Our first creator is Gregg Hurwitz, bestselling author and our brand new writer on Batman: The Dark Knight (be sure to pick up or download his debut issue, BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #10, which came out last week). Here’s what Gregg had to say about Comic-Con:

“I know there’re all the fancypants fandangled film and TV booths, but my favorite part of Comic-Con is still the old-school lanes—artists’ alley, toys and comics, zombie T-shirts and steampunk She-Hulks, some teenage kid sketching a ninja next to a master drawing Batman lassoing the moon. It’s the wonder. The possibility. I marvel at seeing so much creative expression displayed with so little self-consciousness. Most of all, it’s the vibe. Everyone is there because there’s nowhere else they’d rather be. The artists and writers, the shop owners and distributors, and most of all, the fans—they all love what they do. And Comic-Con SD is the best and biggest place to do it.”

Gregg will be signing in the DC booth and participating in the Batman: Beyond the Night of Owls panel on Thursday, July 12th at 2 p.m. (Room 6DE). If you can’t make the panel, we’ll be covering it live as it unfolds right here on DCComics.com. Don’t miss it, and be sure to swing by THE SOURCE again tomorrow for our next Countdown to Comic-Con feature!
