Geoff Johns on the conclusion to his epic GREEN LANTERN run

So here’s the sad news: Doug Mahnke and I are closing the GREEN LANTERN SAGA that began with GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH #1 with this May’s 64-page GREEN LANTERN #20. As every storyline is coming to a head, it feels like the right time. The book is still doing great. The characters are as vibrant as ever. Let’s go out how we started – on a high note.

Counting up between the GREEN LANTERN monthly series, REBIRTH, BLACKEST NIGHT and the various one-shots and specials…that makes over 100 issues of GREEN LANTERN I’ve had the absolute privilege, pleasure and fortune to write.

I’m obviously ending my run with a little sadness because I love these characters, every single one of them. But I’m walking away feeling very proud of what we’ve done and very grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with so many fellow creators. It’s that collaboration, and every reader out there, who have made this a truly special experience. It's hard to imagine a GREEN LANTERN universe without characters like Atrocitus, Larfleeze, Saint Walker, the Indigo Tribe or the rest of the gang anymore. And I can't count how many Lantern t-shirts of all colors I continue to see.

It was Dan DiDio and Peter Tomasi who I first spoke with about GREEN LANTERN. Dan was the Executive Editor of DC Comics at the time and Pete my editor on JSA. They both wanted to relaunch GREEN LANTERN. My very first proposal that I could find dates back to September 2nd, 2003 meaning I’ve been working on GREEN LANTERN for nearly ten years in some way or another. I’ll never forget Dan telling me his idea for the title, “Rebirth,” he said.

Through BLACKEST NIGHT and BRIGHTEST DAY, literally, Peter Tomasi has always been there. From the incredibly long conversations and debate on REBIRTH to later writing GREEN LANTERN CORPS beginning with the conclusion of SINESTRO CORPS and up until today, Pete has been my creative partner in crime and what GREEN LANTERN grew into would not have happened without him.

And, of course, look at the amazing artists I worked with: Ethan Van Sciver, your mad genius was key to everything we expanded the universe into – the endless energy you have for creation is unmatched. Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, you brought a scope only you two could deliver culminating with BLACKEST NIGHT – and you’re showing the world what JUSTICE LEAGUE should be. And Doug Mahnke…he’s the current superstar I work with every month on GREEN LANTERN and have for years now. Doug, you’re one of the most amazing and unique artists in the business. Your power, grit and sense of wonder can be seen at its very best in the gatefold cover for GREEN LANTERN #20.

I’m fortunate enough to continue working with Doug as we head over to a new project later this year.

We all owe a debt to Julius Schwartz, John Broome and Gil Kane for creating such an incredible foundation to build on with Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. Without them, there would be no Green Lantern.

So what will GREEN LANTERN #20 bring? The bizarre return of Hal Jordan, the final fate of Sinestro, the revelation of the First Lantern and an ending that I hope pays off everything we’ve ever done and ever created with GREEN LANTERN. It has art by Doug Mahnke, Ethan Van Sciver, Ivan Reis and Joe Prado and I’ve poured everything I can into the script.

I’m off to focus my energy on the JUSTICE LEAGUE universe as we head into what I hope is an exciting plan – Simon Baz and B’dg will be along for the ride in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA – and you’ll no doubt see Hal Jordan and some of the other Lanterns in the world of the Justice League before too long. And Sinestro…? You’ll have to read GREEN LANTERN #20 for that…

Thank you again for reading – whether you started with REBIRTH or started this month – I sincerely appreciate your time and imagination.

In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night –

All Will Be Well,
Geoff

Third Wave Spotlight: THE PHANTOM STRANGER #1

In September, Zero Month introduced you to four all-new ongoing series: THE PHANTOM STRANGER, SWORD OF SORCERY, TALON and TEAM 7. With these #0 issues, you got a taste of the new characters and stories that will be impacting the ever-growing DC Universe.

This month, each of these four series will launch their #1 issue. To celebrate these releases, we’ve been putting a spotlight on each of these new titles every day this week on THE SOURCE. Last (but certainly not least!) up is THE PHANTOM STRANGER #1. From writer Dan DiDio and artists Brent Anderson and Philip Tan, THE PHANTOM STRANGER #1 hits stores on October 10. We asked DiDio and Anderson to tell us a little bit about their creative processes and to tease what readers can expect from issue #1.

How did you use issue #0 to help you launch issue #1? How were your creative approaches to these two issues different?

DAN DIDIO: With issue #0, we gave you a much longer look at the Phantom Stranger’s origin than we originally planned. And while that book is a look back, issue #1 sets up a number of storylines that will play out in the course of the series.

What’s been the most fun aspect of writing/drawing and launching the new series so far?

BRENT ANDERSON: All the characters in THE PHANTOM STRANGER so far are new to me and I enjoy seeing new characters’ personalities develop under my pencil (oh, and drawing the fedora – I love that!).

DAN DIDIO: The most fun (and the most difficult) part is keeping the book focused on the character of the Phantom Stranger. In past series, the stories were mostly about other characters and how the Stranger affected their lives. With this series, every story affects the Phantom Stranger.

Do you have a ritual (music you listen to or something you eat or do to get you prepped) before approaching the writing/drawing for the series? If so, what is it?

BRENT ANDERSON: I like to watch TV series and movies on DVD that tangentially relate to the subject matter. I listen to the soundtracks and other genres of music in the same fashion.

DAN DIDIO: Long morning walks to sort out the stories. And it’s probably good that it’s early in the morning – the less people who see me talking to myself, the better!

Below, take a first look at THE PHANTOM STRANGER #1 by taking an exclusive look at some of the issue’s interior art by Anderson and Tan.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1 Spotlight

This month, DC Comics will release its next batch of Annuals. These special oversized issues will not only build off of the events in their respective series, but will also greatly impact the expanding DC Universe. Every day this week on THE SOURCE, we’ve be putting individual spotlights on each of these Annual issues by talking to various writers, artists, and editors to give you special sneak peeks at what’s to come! Last (but certainly not least!) up is JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1, which directly follows the shocking and game-changing events of JUSTICE LEAGUE #12!

“JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1 sets the stage for some major changes in the JUSTICE LEAGUE universe,” co-writer Geoff Johns teased to THE SOURCE. “Obviously, it's the last issue of the series, but certainly not the last story for any of the members – especially Booster Gold who ultimately will once again be drawn into the center of the DC Universe as the events of JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 start to change the course of the future.”

“I had a great time working with Geoff on this issue especially one as important as this,” continued DiDio. “It brings an end to certain stories and launches several characters into new and exciting directions.”

"Working with Dan DiDio and Geoff Johns was a great experience and presented me with something different to tackle in my career,” added artist Jason Fabok. “I had a great time drawing the JLI team in this last chapter of their story. What will come next for these characters? What big surprises await the Justice League?  It's an exciting time to be a DC comics fan!"

“JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1 introduces two new members, Olympian and Blue Beetle, who join just in time for the team to implode,” concluded editor Brian Smith. “Several established players quit and not everyone will survive. All this, plus a shocking glimpse into the future of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.”

Co-written by Geoff Johns and Dan DiDio and illustrated by Jason Fabok, JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1 goes on sale August 29.

Paperback Spotlight – O.M.A.C. VOL. 1: OMACTIVATE

It’s hard to believe that we’re already almost one full year into DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. To celebrate this monumental anniversary, each day this week on THE SOURCE we’ve been spotlighting a different paperback collected edition being released this month. With the launch storylines of these critically acclaimed series collected for the first time in their entirety, it’s a great way for new readers to join the growing DC Universe. Today, we shed a spotlight on O.M.A.C. VOL. 1: OMACTIVATE.

“Going into O.M.A.C., we knew we wanted to do a big, bold, brassy, over the top comic book,” co-writer and artist Keith Giffen told THE SOURCE. “That was, believe it or not, our mission statement. Whaddaya know... things worked out.”

“Be forewarned: if you like your comics all warm and cuddly and concerned with your feelings you might want to pass on this. If, however, you're into the sheer lunacy that only comics can provide ... have we got some stories for you.”

“As I write this, I'm inking the first few pages of the O.M.A.C. zero story, digesting the mayhem and madness that Dan DiDio and Keith Giffen have just dropped on my desk,” inker Scott Koblish continued. “It's been about half a year since I touched a page of O.M.A.C., but it is a comfort to sit down with another set of great pages in front of me. In the intervening months, I've been stretching myself creatively and into different artistic fields, banging my head against as many walls as possible, in an effort to stretch myself out of my comfort zone. Inking over O.M.A.C is like coming home to a cup of hot chocolate after a day on the Iditarod; I'm enjoying it too much, and I know I need to get out there and race with the dogs again, but it's such a comfortable place I just want to stay here for awhile.”

“I've been a very big Jack Kirby fan since I was young. Jack Kirby was a virtuoso, a man who trusted his imagination to lead the way, and he painted in broad, influential strokes and he looms over the comic book industry like Shakespeare looms over the theater. Working on a book called O.M.A.C is a little like starting up a modern-day theater revival of Hamlet you have to make sure to keep what's good, you want to have a spin on it that keeps it fresh, and you want to remind everyone what was important about the work in the first place. Dan and Keith played well to those strengths. An O.M.A.C. story is an explosive thing, full of big ideas, bombast and power, stories that reflect our modern day collisions of monsters, machines and mortals.”

“It infected me to work on a book like this; the velocity with which ideas were flying was intoxicating.  As the team got comfortable with everyone else's strengths, it became clear to me that there was no story that couldn't be told. If Dan and Keith would turn onto some new concept, each time everyone knew how to make it work.”

“On each page of O.M.A.C., I would be surprised three times, and I'll take the last page of the first issue as a perfect example. Keith surprised me with that splash of Brother Eye, a full on homage to Jack Kirby: the sun was bursting with energy, the sky and moon were frantic with endlessly erupting with energy, and the land below the satellite was composed entirely out of shock-lines, as if the entire North American continent was shuddering in awe of the seething power of Brother Eye. The whole time I inked it, I couldn't get the phrase ‘the music of the spheres’ out of my head.  My second surprise would come with Brian and Kristy Miller's Hi-Fi colors: Bright, stunning, a confident attack on the senses, each color vibrantly juxtaposed in violent confluence. And the third surprise was Dan's dialogue, quirky and (to me) completely out of left field. It lent a twist to the proceedings that I really enjoyed. The sheer insanity of a satellite orbiting high in cosmic grandeur, lecturing a confused and bewildered Kevin Ko, ‘Eye am BROTHER EYE, and you and Eye have much to talk about. But first, call your girlfriend. She's worried about you.’ And then, at the bottom of the page, in Travis Lanham's deft and grand lettering, the next issue blurb - the promise of things getting ‘really weird’ next issue (and they did!). Fantastic.”

“POW! Liked the Checkmate Elite team? Ka-boom! How about some alligators with electric heads? Zap! Enjoyed the issue with the evil Human Resources girl? Thoom! How about some walking, talking animals? Crash! How about ripping the walls off of Kevin's last safe place?”

“The trade is a very nice package. It opens up about some of the process that Keith and Dan went through, and it has the first few pages of a shelved attempt at the first issue, different designs of O.M.A.C., the Psi-Fi Man and Sweet Leilani (I got to meet her Earth-Prime counterpart a few months ago and she's adorable).”

“Regrets? I wish we'd gotten to do more, to see what impact each new idea was going to have, but that's comics – we are always commanding a ship that seems ready to collapse out from under us at any moment. All we can do is throw out as many stories as we can, and hope some of them make an impression on a reader's mind. On your mind, hopefully. Pick up O.M.A.C. VOL. 1: OMACTIVATE if you can, and don't worry about us, we've been busy building our next boat. Hopefully you'll be there to watch us unfurl the sail on that one too.”

“For me, O.M.A.C. was one of those rare titles that truly explored uncommon territory in the DC Universe,” concluded series editor Harvey Richards. “Admittedly we didn’t work from a complete blank slate, we followed the footprints of the legendary Jack ‘the King’ Kirby, who introduced dozens of ideas that established the foundation of sci-fi characters in the DC Universe (and comics in general). Those are big shoes to fill. And while a handful of creators have flirted with the O.M.A.C. concept in the past, we felt that DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 would be the perfect opportunity to dive deep into those ideas again. And who else could be up to that task then Dan DiDio and Keith Giffen?”

“DiDio and Giffen on O.M.A.C. could only be described as letting two kids loose in a toy store. They were constantly on the phone brainstorming on possible story ideas. They reintroduced characters to the DC Universe that haven’t been seen in years and yet they added new elements to make the characters feel fresh for the modern world. Some characters were altered so much they became new characters entirely. Dan wrote draft after draft trying to find the right voice for the characters, while Giffen drew at least two issue’s worth of unused O.M.A.C. pages just trying to get the right energy and feel for the stories. Hardcore Kirby fans may even noticed a few Easter Eggs scattered throughout the run hinting at moments of the pass and possible future stories, but we never let those elements hinder a new reader’s enjoyment.”

“People couldn’t stop talking about Keith Giffen and Scott Koblish’s artwork on O.M.A.C. They were blown away at how Keith channeled Kirby’s style. It wasn’t difficult for Giffen because that’s his actual art style. He went back to his foundation as a comic artist – add Koblish’s clean crisp inks, the vibrate colors of HI-FI, Brian and Kristy Miller, and the dynamic lettering of Travis Lanham. Together we produced a comic that didn’t look like anything else on the stands!”

“Even though we didn’t get a chance to explore all of our ideas in the run, I have no doubt that this series has plant the seeds of new ideas for years to come. To all those fellow dreamers who sometimes fall reaching the stars, I’d like to pass on the word of Brother Eye, ‘Omactivate’!”

O.M.A.C. VOL. 1: OMACTIVATE is available in bookstores everywhere now.

Neil Gaiman Announces His Return to One of the Most Celebrated Comic Books of All-Time -- THE SANDMAN

Surprise Announcement at San Diego Comic-Con Pairs Legendary, Award Winning Author with Artist JH Williams III Under DC Entertainment’s Vertigo Imprint

Twenty-five years after one of the most celebrated graphic novels of all-time hit shelves, award winning and critically acclaimed author and screenwriter, Neil Gaiman, announces his return to THE SANDMAN. Gaiman made the surprise announcement, via video, at DC Entertainment’s Vertigo panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.  Karen Berger, Executive Editor of Vertigo, then revealed that Gaiman is paired with artist, JH Williams III (BATWOMAN) for the series, who appeared on stage to an already stunned and elated crowd. THE SANDMAN mini-series will be published by Vertigo in 2013.

One of the few graphic novels ever to be on the New York Times Best Seller list and lauded by critics the world over, THE SANDMAN is credited with changing the path of storytelling in the comic book industry. Gaiman will pick up his pen for the first time in more than 10 years since ending the series to continue a story that he feels still has yet to be told.

"When I finished writing THE SANDMAN, there was one tale still untold. The story of what had happened to Morpheus to allow him to be so easily captured in THE SANDMAN #1, and why he was returned from far away, exhausted beyond imagining, and dressed for war. It was a story that we discussed telling for Sandman's 20th anniversary... but the time got away from us. And now, with Sandman's 25th anniversary year coming up, I'm delighted, and nervous, that that story is finally going to be told,” said Gaiman.

"There's nothing like a Neil Gaiman story," said Berger, "and there's nothing like having Neil back home on THE SANDMAN, his dark, soulful, literary epic that transformed comics and continues to captivate countless new readers year after year. Working with him again, and with JH Williams, the extraordinary and groundbreaking artist, is truly the stuff dreams are made of."

DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio added, “As accomplished as Neil Gaiman is in other media—whether it be novels, film and even music—he still has an incredible passion and love for comics. It’s exciting to have him back. J.H. Williams will be the perfect complement to Neil’s writing. He has a history of creating art that pushes the boundaries of the medium.”

Each issue of THE SANDMAN mini-series will be published day-and-date digitally.  The title will be announced at a later date.

INTRODUCING DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 "0" MONTH

Timed to the one year anniversary of the launch of the historic DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 initiative, DC Comics will introduce 0 month.

In September 2012, DC Comics will release 0 issues—and we don’t mean we aren’t publishing any titles—but what we will be doing is numbering every DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 title #0.

#0s will be stand-alone stories. “Some issues will tell the origins of a character or a team, or in some case where an origin has already been told, they will fill in the blanks in terms of questions readers may have about the New 52 DC Universe,” said Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief. “Each of these issues promises to reveal something surprising.”

And debuting at #0 are four new comic book series:

TALON - Co-Writers: Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV. Artist: Guillem March.

Meet Calvin Rose, the only Talon to ever escape the grasp of the Court of Owls. This former assassin of the Court is trying to live a normal life ... but that’s impossible when he’s being hunted by his former masters!

SWORD OF SORCERY – Writer: Christy Marx. Artist: Aaron Lopresti.
Featuring the return of Amethyst, Amy Winston leads a strange life on the road with her mother and resents it. She’s about to learn it’s all been necessary when she discovers she’s the lost princess of Gemworld—and she’s being hunted by her murderous aunt. With a back-up story written by Tony Bedard with art by Jesus Saiz, set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the monstrous warrior Beowulf is charged with finding and defeating the evil Grendel.

THE PHANTOM STRANGER - Writer: Dan DiDio. Artist: Brent Anderson.
Spinning out of his recent appearances in JUSTICE LEAGUE and DC’s Free Comic Book Day story, learn more about the true origin of The Phantom Stranger and his connection to the mysterious Pandora.

TEAM SEVEN - Writer: Justin Jordan. Artist: Jesus Merino.
Set in the early days of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, threads of the entire DC Universe collide. As Superman emerges, so does the world’s counter measures against him and his kind. Team 7 is comprised of Dinah Lance, Amanda Waller, Steve Trevor, John Lynch, Alex Fairchild, Cole Cash and Slade Wilson — and their story will change everything you know about DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

The four new series will follow with issue #1s in October and other series will resume their numbering.
