Chip Kidd to design BEFORE WATCHMEN Deluxe Edition covers

The most talked about prequel miniseries in the comic industry are about to be collected in 4 deluxe hardcover editions. Wrapped in covers designed by Chip Kidd, award winning book jacket designer (Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho and much much more) and writer (Batman Death By Design, The Cheese Monkeys), they will arrive this summer.

Having previously designed a variant cover for BEFORE WATCHMEN: RORSCHACH issue #3, we asked Chip Kidd about what it means to him to design these, destined to be, historic covers. Here’s what he had to say, "To design these covers is both a privilege and an honor. And a challenge!,” said Kidd. “The 'Before Watchmen' creative team did a truly impressive job, and I will try to do justice to them. So to speak."

Well, we can’t wait to see them and we hope you’re just as excited as we are. So stay tuned for their future reveal.

And look for BEFORE WATCHMEN: MINUTEMEN/SILK SPECTRE and BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS/CRIMSON CORSAIRJune 26th in comic stores and July 2nd everywhere books are sold and BEFORE WATCHMEN: NITE OWL/DR. This Just Happened: The Crimebusters Meet

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS #4 or BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE #4 yet and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoiler ahead!)

This week saw the release of BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS #4 and BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE, both critical parts of the inter-connected prequel mini-series that build on the foundation of the original WATCHMEN, the best selling graphic novel of all time.

In BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS, brought to you by writer Len Wein and artist Jae Lee, our hero continues his career fighting crime while serving his country by advising The President during the Cuban Missile Crisis. All around him the second generation of masked adventurers makes their debut, each inspired by The Minutemen that came before them. Ozymandias watches them all as he moonlights as a crime fighter while building his business empire. But one night his effort to change the world is interrupted by a letter from Captain Metropolis summoning him to a meeting.

Meanwhile in San Francisco, Laurie defeats the Chairman once and for all in the final issue of BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE, written by Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner and illustrated by Amanda Conner. After the battle, she returns home as a “hero.” But before she can really make a difference, she has to do one last thing for her mother: attend a meeting organized by Captain Metropolis.

By bringing all the heroes together, Captain Metropolis hopes to create an organization of masked adventurers to fight crime and replace The Minutemen who disbanded years ago. This same meeting is also depicted in WATCHMEN and plays a key role in this graphic novel that inspired these mini-series.

Metropolis’ hopes are dashed when the meeting takes a turn for the worse. The Comedian hates the idea and eventually causes everyone to leave. Will The Crimebusters ever come together as a team?  Is there a leader in their ranks that can unite them all? Share your thoughts in the comments section!

Below, take a look at some of the final pages of BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS #4 and BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE #4 for two very different perspectives of when the heroes meet for the first time. And be sure to pick up future issues of BEFORE WATCHMEN to find out what happens next for The Crimebusters.

Win a Before Watchmen: Minutemen Card Signed by Darwyn Cooke!

You guys are sure having some fun with those die-cut covers, aren’t you? Last Wednesday, we offered you a chance to win a couple of LEGO Batman prize packages by tweeting us your DC comics photos, and many of you put those Joker faces to good use. However, our winning photos took a different approach, as you can see below:

My cat reads faster than my boyfriend.

The above photo and caption were both submitted by @rcknjess on Twitter. (Hopefully, her boyfriend has finished reading BATMAN, INCORPORATED #0 by now!)

Jason Todd, keeping up on “current events.”

Our second winning photo and caption were submitted by @drewtos, who apparently took a break from the Outlaws to read BATMAN #13. Both winners will be receiving a great LEGO Batman prize package that includes a copy of both LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and the LEGO Batman Visual Dictionary, which aside from being a fun reference for LEGO Batman fans, also features an exclusive minifigure.

We’re big fans of LEGO Batman around here, but if you prefer your comics and your heroes to be a little edgier, then you’ll be happy to know that for this week’s giveaway, we’re moving to the opposite end of the age spectrum.

Today marks the release of BEFORE WATCHMEN: MINUTEMEN #4, which continues the dramatic story of the Minutemen—the forebears Rorschach, Ozymandias, Dr. Manhattan and the rest of the team at the center of the classic graphic novel and its film adaptation. It’s a dark, relentless story of Golden Age heroics, drawn and written by Darwyn Cooke. So to celebrate this great Before Watchmen comic, we’re giving you all a chance to win a Minutemen card signed by Darwyn.

As usual, the card is 11” by 14” and is made of heavy card stock. Many of you fans will recognize it as the cover of BEFORE WATCHMEN: MINUTEMEN #1, which was actually the very first Before Watchmen comic released! If you’re a fan of either the Watchmen or of Darwyn’s work, you’re going to want this up on your wall. But, as usual, you’ll need to do a few things if you’d like to get your hands on it.

1) If you're not already doing so, be sure to follow @DCComics on Twitter and Instagram.

2) Pick up some of your favorite new DC comics on Wednesday and take a photograph of you reading them. (If you can’t make it to a comic shop on Wednesday, a photo of you reading any DC comic will do.)

3) Share your picture with us via Instagram and tag @DCComics and #DCComicscontest.

That’s all there is to it! At 5 pm PST on Monday, October 22, 2012, one winner will be chosen at random and direct messaged for his/her mailing address. The winner will be featured on Twitter and if possible, here on DCComics.com. DC Comics will tweet the winner’s photo and a fan shout out on or around Tuesday, October 23, 2012.

5.2 Reasons We Love the First Round of BEFORE WATCHMEN

It's the been almost a month since the debut of BEFORE WATCHMEN: MINUTEMEN #1, marking a point in which the entire first round of Before Watchmen titles are on shelves and available on the Interwebs for digital download. Along with Minutemen, that includes the first issues of SILK SPECTRE, THE COMEDIAN, and NITE OWL—and only one issue in and we're already on watch for more Watchmen.

If you haven't gotten a chance to read these first forays back into the world of Watchmen, well, you're in luck because today we're breaking down the 5.2 Reasons We Love the First Round of Before Watchmen!

1. Darwyn Cooke

Darwyn Cooke wrote and illustrated one of the most fan-favorite comics of all time—the amazingly beautiful period piece DC: THE NEW FRONTIER. With Before Watchmen: Minutemen, Cooke returns to both creative double duties and the 1940s-1950s era. Golden Age greatness really resonates well with the romanticized style and tone of the time period, and Cooke captures that sentiment perfectly.

And Minutemen isn't the only Before Watchmen book Cooke is writing. He's also co-scripting Silk Spectre with artist Amanda Connor, and speaking of which...

2. Amanda Conner drawing Silk Spectre

This goes without saying, but Amanda Conner is a phenomenal artist. Her style is incredibly unique and she conveys emotion and character brilliantly through facial expressions and body language. Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre contains all of this, but Laurie's fantasy scenes easily stand out as some of the best parts.

3. Set Up to the Punchline

The ironically named Comedian stands as one of the most deplorable characters in WATCHMEN. He's a tough character to approach, but if there's one person we're confident can pull it off, it's writer Brian Azzarello. With the first issue, he's already laying fascinating groundwork into the history of the character and the history of the world, such as with the Comedian's involvement with the Kennedys and a certain blonde bombshell.

4. Joe and Andy Kubert

Legacy plays a big role in the DC Universe—and Before Watchmen: Nite Owl directly reflects on that idea. So, what better artistic team to have than the real life father/son duo of the legendary Joe and Andy Kubert? A legacy book done by legacy artists. It's metamazing!

5. The Past is Present

One of the most fun aspects of Before Watchmen is the subtle references the series makes to the original graphic novel. Here are two awesome ones from Silk Spectre and Nite Owl. Be sure to keep an eye out for more!

5.1 Jim Lee Variant Covers

5.2 The Entire Thing Gets Us Excited for What's Next
