The Best of 2011

The end of the year means a lot of things: traffic around Times Square, midnight kisses and the clinking of champagne flutes across the globe and gyms full of people looking to stick to their resolutions. But in the publishing industry, one thing that the end of the year also signifies is the publication of various “best of the year” lists.

USA TODAY just published their story on the best things to happen in the comic book industry in 2011. Best writer? Scott Snyder. Best superhero artist? J.H. Williams. Best artist return? Jim Lee. Best worst Super hero? Aquaman. It's all there--and more, with multiple name checks for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

THE VILLAGE VOICE included ANIMAL MAN and SPACEMAN on their list of the best comic books and graphic novels of the year while NPR's MONKEY SEE BLOG's list featured DEMON KNIGHTS, ANIMAL MAN, DAYTRIPPER, AQUAMAN and WONDER WOMAN.

Over on THE TORONTO STAR’s list of the top 10 graphic novels of the year, you’ll find DC COMICS: THE NEW 52 OMNIBUS and the deluxe edition of JOE THE BARBARIAN.

Meanwhile, IGN dubbed the launch of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 the “best moment of the year.” AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST was also named the “best miniseries,” SECRET SIX #36 won the award for “best single issue” and Scott Snyder was again crowned the “best writer.”

And while you’re at IGN, be sure to check out their list of the Best Vertigo and Icon comics books of 2011. AMERICAN VAMPIRE came in at #1 with THE UNWRITTEN, SWEET TOOTH, SCALPED, IZOMBIE, FABLES, and NORTHLANDERS all making the Top 10 list.

Everyone’s Talkin’ About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Wednesday Afternoon (PT) Edition

For the eighth consecutive week, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY ran an exclusive preview from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 on their homepage. This time around? EW follows their exclusive previews of ACTION COMICS and SUPERBOY with the first look at SUPERGIRL #3.

What else is going on? Well, AMAZON.COM named BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR and DAYTRIPPER to their list of Best Comics and Graphic Novels of 2011.

SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE reviewed BATMAN: NOEL, writing that “Batman at the center of a classic Christmas story is simply terrific.”

Meanwhile, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES interviewed T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS writer Nick Spencer. “The technology and its creation through the years is a major part of this story,” Spencer said about T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS Vol. 2, which premieres in stores later this month. “In the first issue, we start seeing what some of these things are, and Daniel in particular has a very big role to play in this story. All of those threads we set up, in the first issue especially, are all things that will be wrapped up here.”

DC Comics and Vertigo take home seven of IGN's Best of 2010 Awards

Seven, they say, is a magic number. And this morning, we can't disagree.

Because DC and Vertigo have put on an impressive showing, combining to win seven, yes seven of IGN's thirteen awards for the Best of 2010.

Here's the rundown...

Best New Series: Vertigo's AMERICAN VAMPIRE

Best Art Team: Gabriel Bá, Fábio Moon & Dave Stewart (DAYTRIPPER)

Best Series Revamp: ACTION COMICS

Best Moment of the Year: BATMAN & ROBIN 13

Best Story Arc: "Batman and Robin Must Die" from BATMAN AND ROBIN

Best Series: BATMAN & ROBIN

Best Writer: Grant Morrison.

Here's IGN on Grant's many accomplishments in 2010:

"The writer wrapped up his run on Batman and Robin in grand fashion. He brought Bruce Wayne back to the present where he belongs. He celebrated the legacy of Batman as a whole in Batman #700. And luckily, Morrison did find time to weave his own original stories with Joe the Barbarian. Any of these projects numbered among the most unique and memorable of the year. Taken together, it's clear Morrison is still at the top of his game."
