Get Excited for the Return of DC Nation: Q&A with 'Young Justice' Producers

DC Nation fans rejoice! The popular Saturday morning programming block from Cartoon Network returns tomorrow at 10a/9c with all new episodes of GREEN LANTERN: THE ANIMATED SERIES and YOUNG JUSTICE.

 

If you’re like us and can’t wait to watch then check out this Q&A with YOUNG JUSTICE producers Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti to get an idea of what we can expect in the coming episodes:


DC Comics: Nearly halfway through the Invasion storyline, it already seems as though Blue Beetle is turning into a pretty important character. Can we expect Blue Beetle to have such a vital role as the season continues?

 

GW: Absolutely.  As the Light's Partner is finally revealed, we'll see that there is a direct connection to Jamie Reyes and the Scarab affixed to his back.


DC Comics: The team’s base, Mount Justice, has been destroyed. Where is the team’s base now? How do they pick up the pieces and move on?

 

GW: The Team isn't going to have it easy.  It's not as simple as picking up pieces and moving to a new locale.  There are multiple issues.  Superboy, Miss Martian, Lagoon Boy, Beast Boy and Mal Duncan were all LIVING at the Cave.  Where will they stay now?  And with most of the Team's Freshmen still not authorized to Zeta up to the Watchtower, what will become the Team's operational H.Q.?  These are key questions to be answered over the next few episodes.  But before they can deal with any of that, they need to rescue the quartet of Teammates that Aqualad abducted for Black Manta and turned over to the Partner.


DC Comics: Can you tease any big villains that are coming up?


GW: We could, but is that really our style?  Oh, what the heck: Despero, Deathstroke, Mongul and the Terrible Toyman!


DC Comics: What do you think is the coolest thing coming? What can’t you wait for fans to see?

 

BV: There's a pretty dramatic shift coming up for our heroes in the remaining episodes this season. We're used to seeing the Team seek out danger. But from here on out, danger will seek out our Team. This new dynamic will test each young hero like never before and bring a heightened sense tension to the series that we haven't explored before. With every episode to come you'll tell yourself that things couldn't possibly get worse for our heroes. But things WILL get worse!

 

DC Comics: Aqualad is working for his dad, Black Manta. He hasn’t gone over to the dark side for good, has he?

 

BV: Our goal with this series is to create twists and turns for the characters that no one will see coming. I'll just say Aqualad's story isn't concluded yet. So keep watchin'!

 

DC Comics: This season has introduced so many more great DC heroes. Which of the newbies is your favorite?

 

BV: I love working with Blue Beetle and not just because of the awesome storyline he has this season. With the ability to create from his armor almost any weapon imaginable, Jaime Reyes has the coolest super suit ever. But along with that armor comes the talking Scarab that only he can hear inside his head. Scarab is great wildcard element that can hot switch between comedy and danger in an instant and that's great stuff to work with when writing for Blue Beetle in the show. 

 

Speaking of wildcard elements, another character I enjoy working with is the original Roy Harper who we got to see in action in the eighth episode of Season 2. You haven't seen the last of Roy and he's a character to keep an eye on.

5.2 Reasons We Love DC Nation

This Saturday at 10 am on Cartoon Network, the DC Nation block of animated programs launches into all new episodes of Young Justice: Invasion and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. Of course, the icing on this animated cake of awesomeness is that we’ll also get brand-new installments of DC Nation shorts. That’s right. More Mad Presents... That's What Super Friends Are For! More The Batman of Shanghai!

 

Okay, some of you are likely freaking out with us right now while the rest of you are looking at us strangely. Well, don't back out of the room slowly just yet and ignore the crazed look in our eyes for a moment because we're about the give you 5.2 Reasons that DC Nation Is the Greatest Thing in the History of Everything Ever!

 

Nope. That title is a bit unruly and just makes us sound more crazy-go-nuts. Okay, let's try that again.

 

The return of the DC Nation has a lot of us pretty excited. Sure it reminds us of watching Saturday morning cartoons during our younger years, but also... well, here's the 5.2 Reasons We Love DC Nation!

 

1. All Ages Means All Ages

These days, when someone hears the term "all ages," they tend to interpret it as meaning "just for kids." Admittedly, sometimes this is the case. But other times, like with Young Justice and Green Lantern, all ages means literally that. While the show is perfect for younger fans—ripe with action and adventure—there are plenty of sophisticated themes and complex characters that will entice older viewers as well. Characters die, one guy loses a limb, and there are jokes that will give older viewers quite a laugh (especially one from Artemis about something being "not in a fun way").

 

 

2. Intricate Plots

Storytelling is a tricky thing. Sometimes you get all this build-up that never pays off and lets you down (we're lost on an example of that one), but other times you get mind-blowing revelations that compel you to go back and re-watch earlier episodes to catch the clues that were there all along. Young Justice especially has this in spades. Heck, even the opening scene from the first episode, which has the teen heroes taking down ice-themed villains, actually has a pay off near the end of the season.

 

 

3. Complex Characters

Throughout the course of the first 13 episodes of Green Lantern, viewers saw Razer go from villainous Red Lantern to courageous hero and Kilowog went from being badass to being even more awesomely badass (dude took on an armada!). Young Justice is no slouch in this department either. Every character goes from misleadingly one-note in the first episode to deeply and incredibly complex—none more so than Miss Martian. We must have sat with our jaw on the floor for an hour after viewing the episode "Image." Literally mind-blowing—as in a character actually got his mind blown. Ha! Jokes are fun... Seriously, though, that episode was crazy.

 

 

4. Something for the Fans

As comic fans, we get a bit of a thrill from noticing and pointing out things regular viewers might miss. The creators of Green Lantern and Young Justice love this fact as both shows are filled with hidden Easter Eggs and nods to comics and continuity. One episode of Green Lantern was practically straight up an adaptation of "Mogo Doesn't Socialize" and even the preview image below of the upcoming episode of Young Justice has a little nod to comic continuity:

 

 

5. DC Nation Shorts

We mentioned these earlier during our intro, but we really want to stress how awesome these are. They're delightfully hilarious and as comic fans it sort of amazes in the best way possibly that cartoons starring Animal Man and Plastic Man exists. Last season we saw great stuff like New Teen Titans and DC's World's Funnest (from Aardman, the animation studio behind Wallace and Gromit), and this season already has lined up Thunder & Lightning, Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld and a new series of shorts mashing up the Justice League with the animal kingdom.

DC Nation This Saturday is All New

It’s time to set those alarm clocks and DVRs again. Starting this Saturday, September 29th, it’s an all new Nation!

 

Yes, we know it’s been a long couple of months since the last new episodes of Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Young Justice: Invasion. We haven’t had anything new to look forward to except for, well, sunny weather, school breaks, blockbuster movies…

Of course, it wouldn’t be DC Nation without some unique, original DC shorts to go along with the full-length features, and this weekend won’t disappoint. The shorts are all new as well. This weekend’s DC Nation promises a full hour of some of the biggest super hero action, thrills and surprises you’re likely to find outside of a comic shop, and it all kicks off this Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

DC NATION ARRIVES ON MOBILE DEVICES AND NEWSSTANDS WITH NEW APP AND MAGAZINE

Family-Friendly DC Nation App Inspired by Cartoon Network Programming Block Available for Download Today


Burbank, CA, April 24, 2012 – DC Entertainment announced today that it has released a new family-friendly DC Nation app offering instant access to the best in all-ages content from DC Comics. Based on the popular Saturday morning programming block from Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment, the free app features thousands of pages of kid-safe content including free, first issues of three of the all-time greatest kids’ comics BATMAN ADVENTURES #1, SUPERMAN ADVENTURES, #1 and the multiple Eisner Award-winning TINY TITANS #1.


The app will also offer several Super Hero Origin mini-comics and the first six installments of the ever-expanding DC Nation Secret Files, an encyclopedia of the coolest characters from DC Comics. A monthly DC Nation “mini-mag” will highlight the latest happenings with the Cartoon Network TV programming block. In addition to the wide-range of free comics in the app, more than 100 all-ages DC Comics titles will be available for purchase at $.99 each, with more titles added every week.


On the heels of the app launch, DC Entertainment will also release a new DC Nation Super Spectacular magazine in May. The 64-page magazine will be on newsstands and in comic book shops for $4.99 throughout the summer, offering kids a collection of new comics based on popular DC Nation shows including Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. The magazine will also include exclusive versions of content that extends from the DC Nation app programming, including special versions of DC Nation Secret Files and a DC Nation Sneak Peek. Cartoon Network Announces New CG-Animated Series "Beware the Batman"

 Yesterday, Cartoon Network announced a slew of new shows including a new CG-animated series from Warner Bros. Animation, Beware the Batman. Here's the official description of the show, slated to hit the airwaves later this year:

 

 

Beware the Batman

 

A cool, new take on the classic Dark Knight franchise, Beware the Batman incorporates Batman’s core characters with a rogues gallery of new villains not previously seen in animated form. Along with backup from ex-secret agent Alfred and lethal swordstress Katana, the Dark Knight faces the twisted machinations of Gotham City’s criminal underworld led by the likes of Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad and Magpie. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, this action-packed detective thriller deftly redefines what we have come to know as a “Batman show.” Featuring cutting-edge CGI visuals to match the intricate twists and turns of the narrative, Batman steps out of the shadows and into the spotlight for an entirely new generation of fans. It’s DC Nation Friday with Two EXCLUSIVE New Videos

DC Nation took the airwaves by storm with its official debut on Cartoon Network last weekend. And we have just the thing to get viewers excited for tomorrow’s episodes of Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Young Justice – two new videos that are EXCLSUIVE to DCComics.com. 

The first video is a hilarious new Teen Titans short in which Robin experiences a minor wardrobe malfunction. The second video is an exclusive preview of Saturday’s all-new episode of Young Justice where we’ll see Wally West come oh-so-close to fulfilling his birthday wish to finally fight alongside the JUSTICE LEAGUE.  Instead, a massively disappointed Kid Flash is taken off the mission and tasked with a simple delivery job.  But a few deadly surprises await the birthday boy along the way…
