'Justice League Beyond' #17 Explores Micron's Origin, Features Art by Fiona Staples

Tomorrow’s brand new chapter of JUSTICE LEAGUE BEYOND features the never-before-told story of Micron’s origin.  With acclaimed artist Fiona Staples on board, along with writers Derek Fridolfs and Dustin Nguyen, the book is a must-read.

The story explores Micron’s childhood, raised by a single mother and gifted from birth with the ability to change his size at will, we will follow him from birth, his awkward youth, and up to his first run-in with Superman and the Justice League.

Staples described the experience of helping tell Micron’s story as follows, "I don't often get the chance to tackle Super Hero stories, so I was grateful for the opportunity to illustrate this Micron short. I love seeing the human side of these larger-than-life characters, and thought it was quite moving that Micron learned his heroic values and courage from his hard-working mom."

Nguyen enjoyed working with Staples, stating, “Growing up on the TV series I was a huge fan, and now being able to contribute to the history of the Beyond mythos is a complete honor. And working with a roster of amazing talent like Fiona meant contributing to the book was just an added bonus.”

Fridolfs added, "With all the Beyond Origins stories, they're as much about the unsung heroes (their parents) as they are about the heroes themselves. For Micron, we get to see how he got his powers as well as the positive influence his mother had on raising him. And the surprising way it all ties back to Bruce Wayne. Fiona did a superb job of humanizing it all through her art."

Batman: Li'l Gotham Goes to the Birds

Last month, Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs gave Batman fans a fun Halloween treat when they launched their new digital first series, Batman: Li’l Gotham. The fans responded by enthusiastically downloading the first installment and offering this hard-working creative team plenty of reasons to feel thankful.

If you’re yet to discover it, Batman: Li’l Gotham is a winsome new digital first series drawn in a distinct watercolor style by Nguyen and co-written by Nguyen and Fridolfs. Its debut installment was released on October 31st and found Batman and Robin having to keep the streets of Gotham safe while legions of costumed crazies roamed the alleyways in search of…well, candy of course! Tomorrow, the second holiday-themed chapter hits the DC Digital Store, and in the spirit of Thanksgiving, the creative team wanted to express their gratitude…to the fans!

“The characters might be drawn little, but we've had such big hopes for them,” said Fridolfs. “So we're very appreciative for the enormous support by the fan community that turned out to help us launch Batman: Li'l Gotham to great success!”

Series editor Sarah Gaydos shared a similar sentiment. “Thanks so much for the outpouring of support for our first ‘Li'l’ issue!” she said. “It was really heartening to see everyone sharing in the love Dustin and Derek feel towards these characters that so clearly comes through in their work. The Thanksgiving issue is even more fun (and has one of my favorite lines of dialogue!), so I can't wait for everyone to enjoy it.”

Unsurprisingly, tomorrow’s installment takes place on Thanksgiving, but according to the Penguin, it’s the holiday itself that’s a turkey. And he’s about to hold a march against the city in protest.

“With the month of November at hand, we're asking our family of fans to gather around their digital devices, as we give thanks with our next story,” explained Fridolfs. “It might make you rethink your choice to eat turkey, knowing the villain who stands as their advocate. Birds of a feather…”

Look for BATMAN: LI’L GOTHAM #2 in the DC Digital Store tomorrow. We’re all looking forward to reading it, but if any of you need further convincing, Nguyen provided us with this exclusive image listing his five reasons why you should check out the next issue. Enjoy!

Welcome to Li'l Gotham

They say crime doesn’t sleep, but in Gotham, it does enjoy the occasional holiday.

Batman: Li’l Gotham is a brand new, digital first series from artist and author Dustin Nguyen and co-writer Derek Fridolfs. But if you’re expecting this to be a traditional take on Batman, you might want to think again. Batman: Li’l Gotham showcases Dustin’s stylized, watercolor take on the heroes and villains of Gotham, and each new installment will be set against the major holiday of each month. You can look for the debut installment tomorrow, just in time for Halloween.

So what inspired such a different and fun approach to a Batman series? We figured it was best to let the creative team behind it answer that.

“This has been a passion project of mine for some time now, and for anyone that’s followed my work, I’m sure it’s more of an ‘its about time!’ explained Dustin Nguyen. “The look and style is a slight departure from my usual (think the exact opposite of serious), but the idea has always been the same—to take our favorite existing Gotham characters, place them in fun scenarios without having to be tied to just one continuity or look and feel. It’s basically a Batman book for fans, by two huge fans.”

Derek Fridolfs shares his collaborator’s sentiment. “At times in various platforms, Batman has been extremely dark and taken very seriously,” he elaborated. “So respectfully, we’re going in the opposite direction and having a bit of whimsical fun with a whole city of characters beloved by fans and especially ourselves. Li’l size...big enjoyment.”

Equally unique is the choice to tie the series to holidays, but as editor Sarah Gaydos explains, it actually provides a wealth of opportunity. “Tying each story to that month's holiday gives us a really fun opportunity to play with the themes and traditions of each holiday,” she said. “Dustin and Derek bring something special to each and every page. There are SO many ‘Easter eggs,’ so make sure to keep your eyes peeled!”

You can expect Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s installments to follow up tomorrow’s Halloween debut. And whether you read it on your own or share it with the younger DC fans in your life, it really comes down celebrating these holidays and characters together in a fun way. As Sarah puts it, “I love Dustin and Derek's take on Gotham, and I cannot wait for the readers to see what we have in store for them over the coming months.”

DC Comics All Access: Ian Sattler

Thank you!

You're probably a little curious what I'm thanking you for. Is it for reading our books every month? We're always thankful for that, but I'm getting at something else. Am I doing some sort of "Bizarro"-themed page where I do everything backwards? Me say yes! (which is actually "no" and why I stay away from trying to speak Bizarro in public.) Is it because we have a totally amazing Batman Beyond series and we have you, the fans, to thank for it? Yes!!! You see, a while back we were thinking about the idea of doing a new Batman Beyond project. When we'd mention it at conventions, people seemed really excited for it; and when the series came out, everybody turned out to support the book. You all spoke so loudly about wanting a Batman Beyond series that we immediately put plans into action to make sure there was plenty to go around.

This month you can pick up BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #1. Each oversized issue of this series will feature both a Batman Beyond story and one with the Justice League Beyond, and it's brought to you by the awesome creative team of writers Adam Beechen, Derek Fridolfs and Dustin Nguyen with art by Dustin, Derek and Norm Breyfogle. BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED is an especially satisfying launch for us for a couple of reasons. This is the first time there has ever been an ongoing Justice League Beyond series, and it's first time we get to see Batman as an active member of the group (Thanks, Dustin & Derek!). BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED also represents a merging between our digital and print initiatives. Each issue collects original content that debuted digitally earlier that month, allowing fans access to the material however they please. But most of all, BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED represents the realization of a title the fans demanded and that we were overjoyed to provide.

For more information on our digital comics, please check out read.dccomics.com; and for a taste of what's to come, check out the art below. And seriously -- thank you for your support. It's really beyond what we could hope for. Sorry -- that pun was just sitting there ...

Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs on BATWING

The fan-favorite creative team of Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs will be illustrating a special two-part BATWING story arc, beginning with issue 7 in March. Best known for their stellar run on BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM, the pair is also currently working on JUSTICE LEAGUE BEYOND.

Pursuing Massacre to Gotham City, Batwing enlists the aid of his extended Bat-family – including Batman, Nightwing and Robin (with an assist from Batgirl!) – to help combat the threat. But Massacre’s hunted the surviving members of The Kingdom this far, and it’ll take all of their combined efforts to stop him. It’s a massive showdown between Batwing and his arch-nemesis, in which the identity of Massacre will ultimately be revealed.
