A Note from Diane Nelson about DC Comics – The New 52

When I put in place the new DC Entertainment executive team in February of last year, I asked them to think big and be bold – to adopt a “no fear” attitude toward the business we love. We set out to reinvigorate interest in comics, bring in new readers and make our characters and stories more accessible to the widest possible audience, all while respecting the core fans who are the foundation of our company. That’s exactly what the DC Entertainment team has done with the unprecedented roll-out of DC Comics – The New 52 and the launch of same day digital comics. I couldn’t be more proud of the team or the results.

Today’s release of JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 from Geoff and Jim kicks-off The New 52 and marks the culmination of a lot of hard work from all of our teams in New York and Burbank. We’re very excited to share of our efforts with you and I hope you join us in celebrating DC Comics – The New 52. Stay tuned; we have a lot more in store for you throughout September and beyond.

DCU in 2011: A DC Nation note from Diane Nelson

diane_nelson_dcnation

Hi, Diane Nelson here with a very special New Year's greeting to all of the DC Nation.

Let me start by saying it's quite the privilege to be kicking off the new year with this column. Over the last year plus, since becoming President of DC Entertainment, I've had the opportunity to meet several of you at conventions and to see firsthand the excitement and loyalty you have to our characters and stories. We at DC have just come off an incredible year in comics where events like BRIGHTEST DAY, BATMAN: THE RETURN and SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE captured the attention of even the most casual of fans, in both print and digital. In looking back at 2010, we have so much of which to be proud. And we're only just beginning!

In this upcoming year we are planning projects and events to capture and explore the depth and breadth of our character library, not just in comics, but in all media. From gaming, with the launch of DC Universe Online, to film, with the most anticipated movie of the year, GREEN LANTERN, there will be more opportunities to enjoy these characters and stories than ever before.

So much of what we do is with you, the fan, in mind. Our every effort is to insure the quality and integrity of the characters and stories you have grown to love, no matter in which medium they are showcased. If we were to make one New Year's resolution for the company, it would be to make DC the leader in all media, while growing the reach of comics to more fans - existing and new. We are taking steps to achieve this goal through new digital distribution plans and, just as important, by keeping our current line of comics affordable by holding the $2.99 price!

There are so many talented people working here at DC across all three of our brands -- DC Universe, Vertigo and MAD. Each and every one of them is dedicated to making DC Entertainment the best it can be. Even though I'm new to the world of comics, I have quickly come to understand the excitement comics and their characters bring to fans. That excitement is infectious; I feel it in the halls of DC, at conventions -- frankly, anywhere someone asks me what I do; I always get the same look of envy and awe when I say I work for DC. It's a great feeling of pride and family and one I know each of you shares on some level. So let's lift a glass to celebrate what has come before while celebrating what's yet to come. It's going to be a great journey.

Wishing you all the happiest of New Years and hope you will continue to join us for all that we have planned in the year ahead.

UPDATED: Diane Nelson, Jim Lee, Dan DiDio and Geoff Johns on Dick Giordano

"Dick Giordano has left a lasting legacy as a comic book artist and as a DC Comics executive," said Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment. "I join the industry in recognizing his tremendous contribution to DC Comics and send my sympathy to his family and friends."

"When I was just trying to break into comics back in 1986, I received a lot of form rejection letters, including a very gracious one from Dick at DC Comics. On the DC letterhead, he took the time to pen an additional personal note which I still cherish today. "Looking good--keep working at it." Those few words kept this often dejected young artist hanging in there as it took many many more submissions before I finally broke into comics," said Jim Lee, Co-Publisher, DC Comics

"Thank you, Dick, for your words of encouragement, all the years of amazing art and editorial leadership at DC. And finally, for showing us artists how a great inker gets it done."

“Dick Giordano was an inspiration for me when I first joined DC Comics,” said Dan DiDio, Co-Publisher, DC Comics. “He was an innovator and an industry leader as both a creator and a creative executive. He was truly one of the greats in the business.”

"I didn't know Dick Giordano personally, but I knew and admired his work and I was lucky enough to have him illustrate one of the first scripts I ever wrote -- a one shot titled Silver Age: Showcase #1 back in 2000," said Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer. "It was an absolute privilege to briefly cross paths with such an immense talent and such an important part of the DC legacy. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and fellow fans."
