THE FLASH ANNUAL #1 Spotlight

This month, DC Comics will release its next batch of Annuals. These special oversized issues will not only build off of the events in their respective series, but will also greatly impact the expanding DC Universe. Every day this week on THE SOURCE, we’ll be putting individual spotlights on each of these Annual issues by talking to various writers, artists, and editors to give you special sneak peeks at what’s to come! Next up is THE FLASH ANNUAL #1.

"THE FLASH ANNUAL #1 is the culmination of the past six issues, as we finally get to see the DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Rogues team up against the Flash,” co-writer Brian Buccellato revealed to THE SOURCE. “[Co-writer and artist] Francis Manapul and I are bridging the gap between the old ‘gun-toting’ Rogues that everyone remembers from previous continuity, and the new meta-powered incarnations. In the Annual, we finally reveal HOW the Rogues got their super powers and at what cost."

"We couldn’t be happier with the collection of talent we assembled to work from Francis’ layouts. Broken up into chapters, on art duties we have Marcus To, Diogenes Neves, Marcio Takara, Wes Craig, and FLASH legend Scott Kolins! We just had to offer Scott the Rogues ‘flashback chapter,’ and were delighted that he accepted. His take on ‘The Old Rogues’ is new and fresh, yet pays homage to the gang’s history. It might sound clichéd, but it’s truly everything we hoped for and more."

"While the Annual does answer a lot of questions and give context to Flash and his relationship with the DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Rogues, it also propels the book into the next major story arc,” Buccellato continued. “We got the biggest thrill out of having Flash team up with someone unexpected in his fight versus the Rogues. I don’t want to spoil anything, but his uneasy partnership is with a former Rogue that was recently left out in the cold."

THE FLASH ANNUAL #1 speeds into stores on August 29.

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Thursday Morning (ET) Edition

Yesterday you picked up your first batch of #2s from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. And if you’ve already read all of them and can’t wait for next week’s releases, check out some exclusive previews that ran.

EW.COM continued their weekly previews of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with BATWOMAN #2, which received prominent placement on the site’s homepage.

GAWKER’s IO9 ran their exclusive first look at DEMON KNIGHTS #2 by Paul Cornell, Diogenes Neves and Oclair Albert.

(Everybody's Talkin' about) DC Comics-The New 52: Demon Knights edition, Thursday AM (ET)

Two weeks ago, iFANBOY named the highly anticipated JUSTICE LEAGUE # 1 as their Pick of the Week and followed up last week by selecting ANIMAL MAN # 1 (which has quickly established itself as one of the critic darlings of DC Comics-The New 52). Word broke late last night that iFANBOY picked DEMON KNIGHTS for this week’s Pick of the Week, keeping alive their streak of tabbing titles from DC Comics: The New 52.

Here's what Conor Kilpatrick had to say:

"This is superhero fantasy done with a modern sensibility. And it is tons of fun. Writer Paul Cornell is well matched with artist Diogenes Neves. He has a very detail intensive style that does not skimp on the backgrounds and thus does a wonderful job of setting the scene and establishing that this is indeed not a world that you are used to reading in DC comic books. There are some wonderfully frenetic action scenes in this issue that Neves handles wonderfully, and the final page is really a sight to behold."

iFANBOY wasn’t the only site to pay extra attention to DEMON KNIGHTS. POP MATTERS interviewed Cornell three hours in advance of the release of the first issue.

They declared:

"In a heartbeat, Demon Knights is everything The Demon should always have been. A love story amidst an epic fantasy setting is an example of Cornell’s gift as a storyteller, his ability to find the edge, the new. A love triangle just propels the story beyond expectations.

"DC’s New 52 is very much about a reintroduction of the classic. Sometimes characters have been forgotten, sometimes they’re weighed down by decades of continuity. But the company-wide reboot is about bringing creators and longtime readers alike into viewing these characters afresh, and to engage new readers, infecting them with the same enthusiasm the very first generation of comic book readers felt.”

“'I think the New 52 reaches out to all sorts of genres', Cornell continues, 'and it say to a mainstream audience that we know they don’t just like superhero comics. Demon Knights seeks to satisfy those who like that kind of gritty, no safety net, fantasy epic'."

Meanwhile, Turnstylenews.com talked to Cornell and provided a thought-provoking look at the series:

“The book puts the classic Jack Kirby creation "Etrigan the Demon" -- an ill-tempered fiend with a penchant for rhyming bound by the wizard Merlin to the mortal Jason Blood, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table -- at the center of a motley group of characters in the medieval age. Ten years ago, the idea of a medieval fantasy ensemble book being part of the vanguard of a publishing initiative would have seemed preposterous. Yet, in the wake of the Lord of the Rings films, fantasy has never been stronger as a genre, and dark fantasy is newly ascendant.”

Their coverage has already been picked up by the HUFFINGTON POST and other outlets.

(Everybody's Talkin' About) DC Comics-The New 52, Wednesday Morning (ET) Edition

DC Comics-The New 52 was unleashed on Wednesday, August 31st, with the publication of JUSTICE LEAGUE #1. Last week, we saw the release of ACTION COMICS #1, DETECTIVE COMICS #1 and other buzz worthy first issues that have everybody talking.

There will never be another Wednesday like it.

Until today.

Still not sure what titles to pick up from DC Comics-The New 52? We've got links to two more previews out there to help guide you in the right direction.

FEARNET has the exclusive first look at RESURRECTION MAN # 1, in which "the character is reborn for the 21st century."

WIRED's UNDERWIRE blog has the very first look at DEMON KNIGHTS. Their take? "Demon Knights has perfectly positioned Etrigan for the 21st-century fantasy addicts that have made HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones a crossover phenomenon.”

Meanwhile, SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE has an overview of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with a particular focus on Superman in ACTION COMICS. "This is a huge departure from decades of the character's role as invincible protector of the status quo. And to tell you the truth, it's fresh air. . . . I like this all-too-human Superman, and I think a lot of you will, too."

Introducing The Horsewoman

[gallery link="file" order="DESC"]

(Character designs by Gary Frank; DEMON KNIGHTS #1 interior art by Diogenes Neves and Oclair Albert)

This September, DC Comics takes a trip back to the Medieval Ages with DEMON KNIGHTS. Featuring demons, witches, sorcery and plenty of dark magic, DEMON KNIGHTS plants the seeds for the siege that will reverberate through the present-day DC Universe.

One of the many exciting things about DC Comics-The New 52 is the opportunity for new characters to be introduced. In DEMON KNIGHTS, one such character is The Horsewoman. But who is this mysterious new woman and what will her role in the series be?

“The Horsewoman is one of the seven Demon Knights, flung together by a desperate battle,” said series writer Paul Cornell. “She's a mysterious rider who tries to stay apart, on a lonely journey across Medieval Europe. She can ride, but she can't walk, supported in her saddle by magic and invention. She has an absolute affinity for all horses, and she's the greatest archer in history. She tries hard not to care, but always ends up helping those who need her. And the little village Etrigan's reluctant team end up defending from enormous odds is going to need her now.”

DEMON KNIGHTS #1, by Paul Cornell, Diogenes Neves and Oclair Albert, rides into stores on September 14th.
