Details About Geoff Johns' Final GREEN LANTERN Issue Revealed

For nearly a decade, #1 New York Times best-selling writer Geoff Johns has been telling unforgettable stories that have forever changed the Green Lantern universe.

This spring, Johns’ acclaimed run on GREEN LANTERN comes to an epic conclusion with the release of GREEN LANTERN #20. This special oversized issue will feature a sweeping 66-page story, including 55 pages of art by series artist Doug Mahnke and special guest appearances by fan-favorite artists Ethan Van Sciver, Ivan Reis, Patrick Gleason, Cully Hamner, Aaron Kuder, Jerry Ordway, and more! Plus, the final four story pages will make your head explode!

"I'm extremely grateful for being able to conclude our run on Green Lantern with this monster of an issue," Johns told THE SOURCE. "I'm moving on feeling very proud of what my creative collaborators and I have done over the years with the Green Lantern universe. Thanks to all the readers out there who've been with us for this adventure. I can't wait until #20 is in your hands -- the last several pages in particular."

GREEN LANTERN #20 will also include a look back and farewell from Johns, as he reminisces on his extraordinary work from the last nine years.

USA TODAY Announces "Trinity War"

This summer, a war of epic proportions will hit the DC Universe.

Kicking off in July, “Trinity War” will find the Justice League, the Justice League of America, and Justice League Dark teams battling one another in a monumental crossover event. Spanning over six issues throughout the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, and JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, “Trinity War” will see Earth’s biggest heroes going head to head in an explosive arc that will defy the superhero genre.

“It's going to be really interesting when these characters do come together, because some of them haven't met, some of them have, and what happens and unfolds in this is going to force them to choose sides,” writer Geoff Johns (JUSTICE LEAGUE; JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA) revealed to USA TODAY, who announced “Trinity War” earlier this morning both online and in print.

As for how “Trinity War” will impact the future of the DC Universe?

“It's not going to end wrapped up in a bow,” Johns continued to tease. “Something really, really major happens that kicks off some pretty crazy stuff at the end of August.”

Geoff Johns on the conclusion to his epic GREEN LANTERN run

So here’s the sad news: Doug Mahnke and I are closing the GREEN LANTERN SAGA that began with GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH #1 with this May’s 64-page GREEN LANTERN #20. As every storyline is coming to a head, it feels like the right time. The book is still doing great. The characters are as vibrant as ever. Let’s go out how we started – on a high note.

Counting up between the GREEN LANTERN monthly series, REBIRTH, BLACKEST NIGHT and the various one-shots and specials…that makes over 100 issues of GREEN LANTERN I’ve had the absolute privilege, pleasure and fortune to write.

I’m obviously ending my run with a little sadness because I love these characters, every single one of them. But I’m walking away feeling very proud of what we’ve done and very grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with so many fellow creators. It’s that collaboration, and every reader out there, who have made this a truly special experience. It's hard to imagine a GREEN LANTERN universe without characters like Atrocitus, Larfleeze, Saint Walker, the Indigo Tribe or the rest of the gang anymore. And I can't count how many Lantern t-shirts of all colors I continue to see.

It was Dan DiDio and Peter Tomasi who I first spoke with about GREEN LANTERN. Dan was the Executive Editor of DC Comics at the time and Pete my editor on JSA. They both wanted to relaunch GREEN LANTERN. My very first proposal that I could find dates back to September 2nd, 2003 meaning I’ve been working on GREEN LANTERN for nearly ten years in some way or another. I’ll never forget Dan telling me his idea for the title, “Rebirth,” he said.

Through BLACKEST NIGHT and BRIGHTEST DAY, literally, Peter Tomasi has always been there. From the incredibly long conversations and debate on REBIRTH to later writing GREEN LANTERN CORPS beginning with the conclusion of SINESTRO CORPS and up until today, Pete has been my creative partner in crime and what GREEN LANTERN grew into would not have happened without him.

And, of course, look at the amazing artists I worked with: Ethan Van Sciver, your mad genius was key to everything we expanded the universe into – the endless energy you have for creation is unmatched. Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, you brought a scope only you two could deliver culminating with BLACKEST NIGHT – and you’re showing the world what JUSTICE LEAGUE should be. And Doug Mahnke…he’s the current superstar I work with every month on GREEN LANTERN and have for years now. Doug, you’re one of the most amazing and unique artists in the business. Your power, grit and sense of wonder can be seen at its very best in the gatefold cover for GREEN LANTERN #20.

I’m fortunate enough to continue working with Doug as we head over to a new project later this year.

We all owe a debt to Julius Schwartz, John Broome and Gil Kane for creating such an incredible foundation to build on with Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. Without them, there would be no Green Lantern.

So what will GREEN LANTERN #20 bring? The bizarre return of Hal Jordan, the final fate of Sinestro, the revelation of the First Lantern and an ending that I hope pays off everything we’ve ever done and ever created with GREEN LANTERN. It has art by Doug Mahnke, Ethan Van Sciver, Ivan Reis and Joe Prado and I’ve poured everything I can into the script.

I’m off to focus my energy on the JUSTICE LEAGUE universe as we head into what I hope is an exciting plan – Simon Baz and B’dg will be along for the ride in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA – and you’ll no doubt see Hal Jordan and some of the other Lanterns in the world of the Justice League before too long. And Sinestro…? You’ll have to read GREEN LANTERN #20 for that…

Thank you again for reading – whether you started with REBIRTH or started this month – I sincerely appreciate your time and imagination.

In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night –

All Will Be Well,
Geoff

Everybody’s Talking About GREEN LANTERN #0

Today marks the release of GREEN LANTERN #0. As eagerly anticipated as it is mysterious, the issue launches a brand new chapter in Green Lantern history by introducing a new Earth-born ring bearer: Simon Baz.

You’ve already seen the exclusive preview of the issue that ran in THE DETROIT FREE PRESS. But that’s not all that hit the web yesterday. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS chatted with writer Geoff Johns. Check out the interview to read more about Baz, Geoff’s inspirations for the character, and more.

If you want to read more from Geoff, take a look at the interviews he conducted with THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, USA TODAY, BUZZFEED, and THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. Plus, you won’t want to miss GREEN LANTERN #0 artist Doug Mahnke’s interviews with NEWSARAMA and COMICVINE!

For more about GREEN LANTERN #0, read some of the coverage that ran in places like THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES and COMIC BOOK RESOURCES.

Green Lantern vs … The Justice League?!

The “Rise of the Third Army” continues!

After Hal Jordan goes missing, many questions will be left hanging. Particularly for the Justice League, as they decide to go after the new Green Lantern to demand answers about their absent team member. Flying into stores on November 7th, GREEN LANTERN #14 comes to you from the acclaimed creative team of writer Geoff Johns and artists Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy.

“We’re going to be meeting a brand new Green Lantern in issue #0, and unlike his predecessors, he’s not the sort of guy you’d be expecting to wear the ring. That’s putting it mildly,” teased series editor Matt Idelson. “After the events of GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, Hal Jordan is MIA in a very big way, and our new Green Lantern finds himself in a new role, though his troubled life isn’t going to go away in the slightest. In fact it’s the things he’s notorious for that in large part bring the Justice League into the picture—they want to know what’s happened to Hal, and what this guy thinks he’s doing filling the role of Green Lantern. It’s going to be intense, but also very, very cool.”

Below, take an exclusive first look at GREEN LANTERN #14 by checking out Doug Mahnke and Mark Irwin’s cover for the issue.

Dale Keown on his Variant Cover for GREEN LANTERN #8

Today, we’ve got another Green Lantern-flavored treat for you to savor. Below, check out fan favorite artist Dale Keown’s variant cover for issue #8.

“This is the first time I've drawn Green Lantern but I think I had more fun drawing Sinestro,” Keown told THE SOURCE. “My favorite things to draw are space scenes and green stuff. I had a ball doing this cover and I hope I can do more.”

From writer Geoff Johns and artists Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy, GREEN LANTERN #8 flies into stores on April 11th.

THE SECRET OF THE INDIGO TRIBE IS REVEALED

“Tor lorek san, bor nakka mur,

Natromo faan tornek wot ur.

Ter Lantern ker lo Abin Sur,

Taan lek lek nok--Formorrow Sur!”

-Oath of the Indigo Tribe

Not much is known about the mysterious Indigo Tribe; even their oath is all but impenetrable to anyone not of their numbers. But the upcoming storyline of GREEN LANTERN will explore their secrets, revealing shocking truths that will shake the foundations of the entire Lantern universe.

Wielding the light of Compassion, the reclusive Indigo Tribe will be the focus of an ongoing story which begins with GREEN LANTERN #7 – written by fan-favorite, critically acclaimed author Geoff Johns and illustrated by artists Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy.

In “The Secret of the Indigo Tribe,” the uneasy alliance of Hal Jordan and Sinestro continues, as they are taken to the Indigo homeworld to uncover the truths behind a heinous crime. But what crime could keep this unlikely duo together, driving them to investigate a corps ostensibly dedicated to the spread of goodwill throughout the galaxy? And what dark secrets will Hal and Sinestro discover out in the unknown reaches of deep space?

3 Things You Need to Know About GREEN LANTERN

Some have said that three is the magic number. If that’s the case, November should be a fascinating month. Here at THE SOURCE, we’ll spotlighting key third issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with an ongoing series of posts titled “3 Things You Didn’t Know About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.” Expect the unexpected–in threes.

I can’t speak for the rest of DC Nation, but I continue to be reenergized by the direction of GREEN LANTERN.

Who’d have thunk that it would take Sinestro, of all characters, to do it? The GL nemesis now wears a GL uniform again…and this turn of events has transformed the series into the unlikeliest of buddy books, teaming Sinestro with his former protégé Hal Jordan. Seeing the two go back and forth has made the series a true joy to work on, thanks to the creative team supreme of writer Geoff Johns and artist Doug Mahnke.

Naturally, I’m super-excited for the series’ future, and here are 3 things I can share:

1. THIS IS NOT THE SINESTRO YOU REMEMBER.

Sinestro has always been known as the dictatorial GL who fell from grace and returned as the Green Lantern Corps’s greatest nemesis. Now Sinestro wields a GL ring once more — under mysterious circumstances, no less — and what he plans to do with it will likely surprise you as much as it did me.

In our first arc, we reveal a tragic secret about Sinestro: He has a beating heart, a fact Sinestro locks tightly away from the entire universe…until it unlocks for a millisecond. Explaining more would say too much, but watch for it — it could make Sinestro your favorite character in DC – THE NEW 52.

Is Sinestro a hero or villain? The answer is…yes.

2. THE RINGS CARRY SECRETS.

Sinestro revealed to Hal in issue #3 that the ring allows its bearer to create a “stealth mode” costume in black. We learn another doozy in issue #5.

What else does Sinestro know about the ring that we don’t? Stay tuned.

3. THE CORPS’S DAYS ARE NUMBERED.

At least, that’s how the Guardians of the Universe feel. As revealed in issue #3, they’ve deemed the Green Lantern Corps a failure, just as they once did the robot Manhunters that the Corps replaced billions of years ago. What exactly are the Guardians up to? They’ve been chatting about creating a “Third Army” — and what that is will become clear as the series slowly builds towards its next massive crossover with the other GL series. And THAT, DC Nation, will be so hugely momentous, it will quake the DC cosmos to its very core!

In the meantime, enjoy GREEN LANTERN for the here and now — Sinestro and Hal Jordan getting to know each other again for the first time.

Everyone’s Talkin’ About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Tuesday Morning (PT) Edition

OUT.COM previewed the highly anticipated BATWOMAN #3 by J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman.

MAXIM continued their weekly previews of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. This time around? They’ve got you’re exclusive first look at GREEN LANTERN #3 by Geoff Johns, Doug Mahnke, Christian Alamy and Keith Champagne, in stores tomorrow.

GAWKER’s IO9 interviewed BATMAN: NOEL writer/artist Lee Bermejo. “I wanted to play around with the past juxtapositions of Gotham's characters,” Bermejo said. “It's important to make nods to the history without being nostalgic. When I was kid, I grew up watching the 1960s TV show. Because I was five, I had no idea that it was played for laughs. There's an element of that in this book, taking Batman's past history completely seriously.”

And speaking of BATMAN: NOEL, head on over to IGN for your chance to win a copy of the book.
