Announcing the Guest Creative Team for NIGHTWING #13-14

This fall, NIGHTWING’s Dick Grayson will battle against the villainous Lady Shiva. In issue #13, find out why one of the world’s most grave assassins returned to Gotham City. And in issue #14, watch the epic martial arts throwdown between the two. And even if Nightwing may be outmatched this time, he won’t go down without a fight!

Taking over as guest writer for NIGHTWING #13-14 is Tom DeFalco, the fan-favorite writer behind such titles as LEGION LOST, SUPERBOY and NIGHTWING #0. And joining him to take on artist duties are Andres Guinaldo and Mark Irwin.

“When writer Kyle Higgins needed a breather to gear up for the Joker’s monstrous return in issue #15, I turned to Tom, who pitched in on issue #0,” series editor Brian Cunningham told THE SOURCE. “I’ll just come out and say it: Tom ranks among the best ever at writing street-level heroes. And Tom really delivered with his first solo trip to Gotham, following the narrative that Kyle has developed without skipping a beat, and helping to set up the Joker arc. And it felt natural for Tom to continue exploring the character of Lady Shiva, who first appears in NIGHTWING #0."

"In this story, both Dick and Shiva have grown up some since their first encounter—they’re not teenagers anymore—so it’ll be fun to see how each fares in a fair fight. Wait, did I say fair fight? Forget it—Shiva remains by far the better fighter, so it’s up to Dick to find a way just stay alive!"

"On the art side, Andres Guinaldo is an on-the-rise artist to be reckoned with, and you can quote me. He’s extremely talented and has an idiosyncratic style that’s also perfectly suited for mainstream comics. Keep your eye on this guy—he will only get better. You’ll see what he’s capable of in these two issues, especially after Mark masterfully inks him.”

Below, take an exclusive first look at NIGHTWING #14 by checking out Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira’s cover for the issue, which hits stores on November 21.

Preview Mondays: NIGHTWING #8, DOMINIQUE LAVEAU: VOODOO CHILD #2 and MAD #515

For this week’s installment of Preview Mondays, we’re giving you exclusive first looks at NIGHTWING #8, DOMINIQUE LAVEAU: VOODOO CHILD #2 and MAD #515.

The “Night of the Owls” has begun! Following the shocking revelation (SPOILER ALERT!) that Dick Grayson was originally intended to be a Talon, Nightwing must work to save both his name and Mayor Hady from The Court of Owls’ assassin targeting him. But when Grayson arrives to City Hall only to find innocent blood has already been shed, will he have failed his mission before it’s even truly begun? And how does turn-of-the-century era Gotham factor into all of this? Find out in NIGHTWING #8, written by Kyle Higgins and illustrated by Eddy Barrows, Ruy Jose and Eber Ferreira. Click here to see an exclusive preview of the issue.

Last month marked the launch of DOMINIQUE LAVEAU: VOODOO CHILD. In the series’ premiere issue, you were introduced to Dominique Laveau, a New Orleans college student who is believed to have ties to the murder of the Voodoo Queen by the royal court. In the series’ second issue, learn more about the origins of Dominique’s family and why she’s become a target of these supernatural forces. Click here to see an exclusive preview of DOMINIQUE LAVEAU: VOODOO CHILD #2, written by Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and illustrated by Denys Cowan and John Floyd.

For over fifty years, “Spy vs. Spy” has appeared in the pages of MAD Magazine. This dastardly pair (one dressed in black and one dressed in white) has continued to one-up the other, til death do they part. In MAD #515, writer/artist Peter Kuper continues this longstanding and classic tradition with his new strip depicting this diabolical duo of double-cross and deceit. Click here to see the latest installment of “Spy vs. Spy” and be sure to pick up a copy of MAD #515 when it hits newsstands on April 24th.

Who’s Who at DC Comics-The New 52: Eddy Barrows

THE SOURCE: How do you draw a first panel of a first issue?

EDDY BARROWS: It is exciting to start something almost from scratch, create new characters and reshape others – especially when the character is as good as Nightwing. I am very excited about this opportunity.

How do you introduce a new hero?

For Nightwing, it was wonderful. At first, he appears on a big action scene, on a double page that took me a lot of work to get it done … but you guys will be able to see the outcome in September!

How do you introduce a new villain?

When I introduce a new villain, I always think about the type of guy I would rather not run into. That guy who would break someone’s neck just by looking at him/her. But there are villains who do not look like what they really are, who look like ordinary people, but deep inside are as dark as the others. They all take a lot of work. For Nightwing, I am creating the look of some of them, and the good thing is that they are based on what I just mentioned. There is a sequence right in the beginning where Nightwing fights one of them. I loved drawing those scenes.

What was the first comic you ever worked on?

Professionally? It was Stone Cold (Steve Austin) for Chaos Comics.

Who was the first character you followed?

Superman and Spider-Man.

What was the first series you collected?

I think it was Superman.

Who was the first writer you followed?

I usually bought comics based on the artists, but Roy Thomas was the first writer I really started to follow.

Who was the first artist you followed?

Without any doubt it was John Buscema.

What was the first convention you attended as a fan?

It was in Belo Horizonte, the city I live in. At the convention I got the opportunity to meet Will Eisner, Eduardo Barreto, Luke Ross and many other artists I admired back then. It was GREAT!

What was the first convention you attended as a professional?

San Diego Comic Con in 2007.

What was the first comic book you read?

Superheroes? It was Alpha Flight, by John Byrne, when I was 8. Before that I read Donald Duck and Mônica’s Gang, by Mauricio de Souza.

What was your first job in the comic book industry?

It was pencilling.

On your creative process:

I first read the script and then start working on the layouts. After that I send them to the editors so they can proof them all. Once they tell me I am good to go, I finish the pages. I usually work office hours, stopping for lunch and taking a few breaks. That way it is possible to spend some time with my family. After all, they are the ones who give me the support I need to get my job well done!

With all these new villains, Arkham Asylum is going to need a new wing

This October, Gotham City will be overrun by new villains. In DETECTIVE COMICS, Batman will face the Gotham Ripper. In BATGIRL, Barbara Gordon will take on Mirror. Mysterious villains will be terrorizing Gotham in BATMAN, BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT, BATWOMAN and NIGHTWING. And around the globe, evil takes new forms in BATWING and RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS. Can the Bat family defeat all these foes or is the fate of Gotham – and the world at large – permanently doomed?
