Who doesn't want to wear a Flash or Green Lantern ring?

We can't promise it'll make you any faster, or that it'll respond to your willpower, but hey -- that's what our imaginations are for.

But we can promise a way for you to get your hands on one. With BRIGHTEST DAY banner issues THE FLASH #1 and GREEN LANTERN #53 soliciting in the February issue of PREVIEWS, DC Comics is offering promotional FLASH and GREEN LANTERN rings to qualifying retailers.

Cool, right? "But Alex, how do I qualify?" Good question:

With a purchase of 10 copies of THE FLASH #1, retailers may order FLASH PROMOTIONAL RINGS. THE FLASH #1 and the FLASH PROMOTIONAL RINGS are scheduled to arrive in stores on April 14.

With a purchase of 10 copies of GREEN LANTERN #53, retailers may order GREEN LANTERN PROMOTIONAL RINGS. GREEN LANTERN #53 and the GREEN LANTERN PROMOTIONAL RINGS are scheduled to arrive in stores on April 21.

Retailers will be getting more details on the promotion later today.

We swung by our very own Dan DiDio's office to get his thoughts on the incentive, and he was happy to share.

"These rings are not only very cool, but they're a big thank-you to our fans, who've helped make BLACKEST NIGHT a huge success. We're hoping we can all keep the momentum going once the BLACKEST NIGHT ends and the BRIGHTEST DAY begins."

Thanks, Dan! But there's more. We gave Geoff Johns a quick call to get his thoughts. Geoff?

"One of the many great Flash Facts about DC Comics is that they actually do support the retailers with promotions like this that not only make our whole business a bit more fun, but also bring the promotion to every single reader. Of course, the proof is in the content and I couldn't be prouder of the work Francis Manapul and I are doing on THE FLASH and Doug Mahnke and I are creating on GREEN LANTERN. Thanks to everyone, retailers and readers, for an amazing 2009 and here's to an even better 2010!"

Sounds good to me. And did you think we'd let this blog post conclude without a picture of the rings? Of course not. Enjoy:

DCU IN 2010: MORE ON BRIGHTEST DAY: THE FLASH

flash1_cover_cmyk2

AS: In meetings I’ve heard BRIGHTEST DAY referred to, offhand, as DCU: REBIRTH. Being the sleuth I am, this leads me to believe it’s more than just a concentrated series, right?

DD: Definitely. BRIGHTEST DAY isn’t just a single book. Like BLACKEST NIGHT, it’s an event that happens across the entire DC Universe, affecting a number of titles.

Following BRIGHTEST DAY #0, we’ll be bannering a number of new and ongoing series with BRIGHTEST DAY, which will let readers know these books are key to the entire BD story.

AS: Keeping my detective hat on, since Geoff is writing BRIGHTEST DAY and we announced he’d be writing a new FLASH ongoing coming right around the same time…

DD: Correct. We’ll be launching the new FLASH ongoing series, by Geoff and Francis Manapul in April with a BRIGHTEST DAY banner, and there will be several more titles utilizing it come May and June.

With this book, Geoff and Francis are really bringing Barry Allen back into the spotlight and cementing him as the premiere Flash in the DCU in his own monthly. It’s no secret that I’ve been waiting a long time to se this. I’ve always been a huge Barry fan, and I can say that Geoff and Francis are reinvigorating him as a character in much the same way Geoff did with Hal Jordan. Should be fun.

AS: You mentioned other titles?

DD: Yup.

AS: Alright Source readers, swing back in an hour for more BRIGHTEST DAY news. It’s a busy Monday!

Geoff Johns named one of NEW YORK TIMES' "Nifty 50"

gl50_cvr1

BLACKEST NIGHT and GREEN LANTERN writer extraordinaire Geoff Johns kicked off 2010 in a nice way, with THE NEW YORK TIMES naming him to their "Nifty 50," a list that spotlights America's up-and-coming people, who are -- according to the TIMES -- the perfect people to invite to a cocktail party.

It's easy to say that 2009 and 2010 have been and will be banner years for Geoff, but it's also easy to overlook the fact that these achievements have come as a byproduct of years of hard work and creative energy.

I have a vivid memory of walking into my Miami comic shop in 2000 to pick up the latest issue of FLASH -- one of my must-buys as a reader -- only to discover there was a new writer on the series. Believe it or not, there was a time when "Geoff Johns" was an unknown commodity in comics. Weird, right? I picked up the issue, and to this day, I'm glad I did.

Even then, you could see the elements that would help revitalize the Flash and Hal Jordan and catapult Geoff from relatively unknown newbie to the bestselling author he is today: the deft characterization, the ability to skillfully weave continuity to serve the greater story without being constricted by it and -- some would argue, most importantly -- the care and resonance given to these characters that have become a part of our daily pop culture mythology.

When you read a Geoff Johns comic, you're not just getting a fun yarn to chew on for 20 minutes -- you're getting something that's written with care and by someone who's just as much of a fan as you are. Someone who knows how invested you, as a reader, are in these colorful heroes and the world they reside in. That's a very special bond that's not only hard to put into words, but to replicate. And it's part of what makes reading a Geoff Johns comic unique.

This is only the beginning. If the above GREEN LANTERN #50 variant by Jim Lee doesn't get you jazzed, I'm not sure what will. But let it serve as a signal that there is much more Geoff Johns goodness coming your way in the DCU, and we're all the better for it.

So, congrats, Geoff. Here's to more years of amazing stories.

DCU IN 2010: Special edition of DC NATION

dcuin2010

Hey, Dan DiDio here with special edition Digital DC Nation. And if you’ve been following The Source all this week you’ve gotten your first glimpses of the post Blackest Night DC Universe and a sneak peek as some the amazing stories and books we have planned for the 2010.

You’ve heard from Grant Morrison as he gave hints to the whereabouts of Bruce Wayne (possibly one of the wildest Batman stories ever to be told), while Group Editor Matt Idelson confirmed that Clark Kent will return to his famous costume just in time to enter into a WAR OF SUPERMEN (the culmination of over three years of Superman story telling) and have Marc Guggenheim join the writing team. And rounding out the trinity, I finally got to tell you the outcome to the Wonder Woman postcard campaign (and yes, issue 600 is heading your way in June).

Francis Manapul debuted samples of art that we feel catapults The Flash into the new millennium and master creator Len Wein encapsulated his plans for the narrative recounting of the history of the DC Universe in DC: LEGACIES. But like I said in the opening, if you have been following along on The Source, you know we didn’t stop there!

You also learned that the stunning events of JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE go directly into the aptly titled one shot JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE AND FALL which then gives way to the two major storylines THE FALL OF GREEN ARROW (in his ongoing series) and the RISE OF ARSENAL (in his own mini series), all of which, should not be missed!

And capping it all off, we were intensely proud to announce the new Earth One series of original graphic novels. Joe Stracynski and Shane Davis on Superman and Geoff Johns and Gary Frank on Batman, a great start to what I hope will be a great line of books.

So there you have it, your first look into what’s in store for DC Comics for 2010. I hope you are as excited about all this as we are.

Oh… what’s that you say?

What happens at the end of Blackest Night?

Sorry folks. Not. Just. Yet.

So enjoy the egg nog and pop open the champagne, we’ll be back with more in January, and then, all, or at least most of, your questions will be answered.

From all of us to all of you, thank you, as always for your continued support, and have the happiest of holidays.

To be continued….

DCU IN 2010: FRANCIS MANAPUL’S FLASH

If you’re a regular Source reader, you know that while we love talking the talk, we know when to step back and let a piece of art speak for itself. This is one of those instances.

Not too long ago, we announced that Geoff Johns and artist Francis Manapul were taking the reins of the new FLASH ongoing series next year. We also showed a few in-progress pieces of the character, too. But we haven’t shown any final, colored, 100-percent Barry Allen Flash images. Until now, that is.

flash_secretfiles_cover

Behold, the cover to FLASH: SECRET FILES AND ORIGINS, hitting in March 2010, a nice little appetizer before the epic meal that will be the FLASH ongoing. We’ll have more details on the issue in due time, but let’s focus on what you see above – this wonderful cover. We roped in Manapul to give us his two cents on the piece, and working on the Scarlet Speedster. Take it away, Francis:

“I'm excited to be starting the book. The entire creative team is looking forward to introducing new ways of portraying speed. It's also cool that we'll be introducing a new generation to Barry Allen as well as myself so I'll be right in they're shoes of getting to know this guy. It should be an exciting ride!”

Francis was also kind enough to give us a look into his process. Check out these two in-progress images.

For more on the upcoming FLASH series from writer Geoff Johns, click over to THE LA TIMES HERO COMPLEX blog, where Geoff Boucher sits down with a fellow Geoff to talk about the book.

It all comes to a head in FLASH: REBIRTH #5

A few things about this issue: Readers will meet the greatest threat to face the Flash family in decades. A new hero will step into an old speedster's boots. Barry Allen makes the ultimate sacrifice. Yep. You read that correctly. Courtesy of superstar writer Geoff Johns and artist Ethan Van Sciver. You've heard it said before, but this issue doesn't dance around it -- nothing will be the same.

FLASH: REBIRTH #5 hits 11/18.

Joey Cavalieri talks BRAVE AND THE BOLD

BAB Cv28 ds

J. Michael Straczynski wrote to remind me that this December is the 65th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. (I say “remind me” as if I’d been in it!) He’s not bringing it up so I can futz with its Wikipedia entry. It’s because with the current issue of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD, he sends the Flash into the thick of it…to meet the Blackhawks, no less. We’ve done a few Flash stories but you’ve never read one like this! Barry Allen battles on the side of the Allied forces in World War II, in an adventure in which every incident is as unexpected as the premise!

Talking of “allied forces,” that sure describes BRAVE & BOLD. In the book’s grand tradition, JMS is lining up some inventive and even offbeat alliances to feature every issue. Seen the Batman/Dial H for Hero adventure? Everybody’s still buzzing about that one! Snag one if your local store has any left!

In the offing is a Batman/Brother Power the Geek team-up (Brother! Power! The! Geek!). Then, Doctor Fate and Green Lantern see whether or not magic can trump willpower. Jesus Saiz is drawing that one now even as I write this, and he’s having a blast doing it! He really knocked it out of the park on that “Dial H” issue, and he gets better every month!

If you love these Silver Age characters, JMS will remind you why you do! If you never did, or you’ve never heard of them, these new stories will show you why people still talk about them…and why they endure!

(Dude, the Geek abides!)

Your pal,

--Joey

Unveiling the details on the WEDNESDAY COMICS collection

wed-copy-copy

WEDNESDAY COMICS, the groundbreaking weekly series featuring the all-star talents of Neil Gaiman, Joe Kubert, Lee Bermejo, Brian Azzarello, Kurt Busiek and many more, was a critical and commercial success across the board, featuring DC's greatest characters, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern, in stories from the most talented creators in the industry. For 12 weeks, fans were treated to an historic and energized collection of newspaper strips compiled by editor Mark Chiarello that ranged from standard and captivating superhero drama to the surreal and innovative. But wait, there's more?

Just announced at the Baltimore Retailer Summit, we've got the details on the WEDNESDAY COMICS collection, a topic that's been hotly debated and prognosticated by fans since the inception of the series.

The hardcover collection of the series, which will retail at $49.99, will clock in at 11 x 17 inches, which will present the series in a deluxe, big-screen format befitting the series, which was originally printed on broadsheet newspaper pages.

So, there you have it. WEDNESDAY COMICS, presented in oversized and deluxe glory. Not too shabby, huh?

DC Nation on the road with Sattler part 2

Way to go Long Beach! I just got back up to LA from the first Long Beach Comic Con and I had a blast. The show was great, the fans were great, the guest list was great and the weather was great.

Of course you've heard the big news out of the show was Dan DiDio and Philip Tan on Outsiders and Geoff Johns and Scott Kollins on the Wally West cofeature in The Flash. The DC Nation panel was full of all kinds of awesome as I was joined by Geoff, Philip, Pete Tomasi, JT Krul, Sterling Gates and Mr. Bob Wayne. We talked about the popularity of Red Lantern cats, our favorite superhero movies and the many ways we could kill Lady Blackhawk. The Long Beach fans were excellent and I look forward to coming back next year.

The only thing that went wrong at the show was that I forgot to take pictures of the panel. This daily blogging thing is new to me and I got distracted when they gave me a cordless microphone to run around the room with. I tried to make up for it with these pictures of Philip and Dustin Nguyen at their tables. I'll try and do better this week.

See you tomorrow,

Ian Sattler, Senior Story Editor DCU
