Francesco Francavilla has been doing some amazing work in the Detective Comics co-features, and for issue #874 he’ll be taking over the cover of the book with the incredible piece above. We asked Francesco to give us some insight into his creative process for the cover, so we’ll let him take it away:
Somehow, tools, evidence and weapons relating to some of Batman’s deadliest foes are ending up in the wrong hands – and people are dying because of it. Newly ensconced Batman Dick Grayson must piece together the pieces of the mystery, which point to a deadly new adversary. But will he be able to bring down his new enemy before more die?
If that stack comics on my desk (which I’ve kindly reposted above) from yesterday wasn’t clue enough, let me be frank: it’s an exciting time for Batman, and for Batman fans, like me. November lit the fuse and things are not slowing down. Come February, we’ve got the launch of J.H. Williams III and co.’s BATWOMAN ongoing, featuring co-writer W. Haden Blackman.
After Jock emailed over that epic Batman splash page, it was only fair that COMMISSIONER GORDON artist Francesco Francavilla chime in. And wow. Is that a great piece of art – the cover to DETECTIVE COMICS #874.
Some of the most fun I’ve had doing this blog is seeing the process behind a lot of my favorite books. Whether it’s an inked David Finch BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT cover or a Scott Snyder DETECTIVE COMICS script, the chance to get a glimpse of what happens behind the curtain makes the final product that much more exciting.
