"Primal. That's the best way to describe working on THE WAR THAT TIME FORGOT because, in writing a story about modern-day soldiers fighting dinosaurs that have mysteriously reappeared on the planet, it's all about survival. Basic, vital, primal. Channeling my love for such intense films as Predator, Jaws, and Jurassic Park, I wanted to create a visceral experience where the action and the danger feel real. And, we couldn't have gotten a better artist for the project than Ariel Olivetti. The sense of realism his art brings really hits this point home, giving the book a very cinematic tone. Case in point, check out this double-splash from the first issue:
See what I mean. Big, loud, and violent - that's the name of the game as our soldiers are confronted by something beyond their wildest imaginations. Sure, there's a mystery surrounding how they come to find themselves in such a situation - but all that is secondary to our soldiers as they kick into pure survival mode. They don't want answers merely as much as they simply want to get the hell out of this hostile territory.
As a species, man has been pushing around every other life form on the planet - dominating and controlling. But now, he's going to feel what it's like to be on the other side. We've got guns and grenades, tanks and missiles, but can even all that stand up to the creatures that ruled this world millions of years ago? Size may not be everything, but these behemoths sure know how to make an impact in a big way.
So, if the above clash between pterodactyls and helicopters has piqued your interest, I promise you it's only the opening salvo as these two worlds come crashing together."

G.I. COMBAT: Character design for the Unknown Soldier
The first storyline of G.I. COMBAT includes an UNKNOWN SOLDIER backup story written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti with art by Dan Panosian. Check out the Unknown Soldier character design below.
"For me, the most significant aspect of The Unknown Soldier's new incarnation, was I wanted him to look like a cross between what you would see on today's battlefields and what we enjoy most from video games,” said artist Panosian. “I also wanted to give him a constant reminder of his family for his own inspiration. The three marks on his outfit represent the family he's lost. It's almost like a tattoo he's wearing. That's who he's fighting for."

GI COMBAT: UNKNOWN SOLDIER
We recently announced DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 “Second Wave,” which will launch GI COMBAT. This new series will feature rotating back up stories. First up is UNKNOWN SOLDIER by the writing team that brings you ALL-STAR WESTERN, Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, with art by Dan Panosian.
We caught up with Justin and Jimmy to ask them about their story and here’s what they had to say:
“Unknown Soldier is one of the characters I’ve wanted a shot at for years and while this is a four part story I truly hope we can do more with it. I really enjoyed what Josh Dysart was doing on his Vertigo book and felt it deserved much greater success. With that in mind Jimmy and I wanted to take the book in a direction that was closer to the original version and add a modern twist to it. Rather than making it a period piece about the Second World War, we’re using the backdrop of the war on terror with a sense of comic book hyper-reality. Unknown Soldier is equal parts military fiction, espionage and sci-fi. Dan Panosian is in the unenviable position of having to illustrate both a grounded human level of storytelling and over-the-top action sequences in places like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Mexico. The good news is he’s excelling at everything we’ve thrown his way. Its violent, emotional, exciting and with any luck we can bring Unknown Soldier back to the DCU in a way that makes people demand more.”

DC COMICS IN 2012 – INTRODUCING THE “SECOND WAVE” OF DC COMICS-THE NEW 52
In May of 2012, DC Comics will release a “Second Wave” of titles as part of its historic DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 initiative. Six new, ongoing series will build on the shared universe and bold concepts introduced in September 2011 with the renumbering of DC Comics’ entire line of comic books.
Featuring a variety of different genres and storytelling sensibilities, the titles in the “Second Wave” will be helmed by some of the most legendary writers and artists in the comic book industry, and will also feature the first ongoing comic book series written by acclaimed novelist China Miéville.
“The excitement of the initial launch of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 was in seeing the re-imagining of these classic characters and concepts,” said Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief. “The ‘Second Wave’ is all about world-building.”
DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 “Second Wave” includes:
- BATMAN INCORPORATED – Writer: Grant Morrison. Artist: Chris Burnham. The acclaimed ongoing writer of ACTION COMICS, Grant Morrison, presents a fresh take on BATMAN INCORPORATED, in which the Batman brand is franchised globally in preparation for a major international threat.
- EARTH 2 – Writer: James Robinson. Artist: Nicola Scott. The greatest heroes on a parallel Earth, the Justice Society combats threats that will set them on a collision course with other worlds.
- WORLDS' FINEST – Writer: Paul Levitz. Artists: George Perez and Kevin Maguire. Stranded on our world from a parallel reality, Huntress and Power Girl struggle to find their way back to Earth 2. Perez and Maguire will be the artists on alternating story arcs.
- DIAL H – Writer: China Miéville. Artist: Mateus Santoluoco. The first ongoing series from acclaimed novelist China Miéville, this is a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero.
- G.I. COMBAT – Writer: J.T. Krul. Artist: Ariel Olivetti. Featuring the return of a classic DC Comics series, THE WAR THAT TIME FORGOT, along with rotating back-up stories and creative teams – including THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, with writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Dan Panosian; and THE HAUNTED TANK, with writer John Arcudi and artist Scott Kolins.
- THE RAVAGERS – Writer: Howard Mackie. Artist: Ian Churchill. Spinning off from TEEN TITANS and SUPERBOY, this series finds four superpowered teens on the run and fighting against the organization that wants to turn them into supervillains.
The six new series will replace BLACKHAWKS, HAWK AND DOVE, MEN OF WAR, MISTER TERRIFIC, O.M.A.C. and STATIC SHOCK, all of which will conclude with their eighth issues in April.
“Many of the characters from our canceled books will appear in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 titles, and in some very surprising ways,” said Harras. “We’re developing stories that reach from cultures around the globe to parallel worlds. We’re just getting started.”

DC brings back key war titles in September
The DC offices are closed today, so posting will be light. And, I should be well on my ways to a few days of rest in the Florida Keys as you read this. But we do have one cool bit of news for you to carry you through this Memorial Day weekend.
This September, DC will bring back a number of familiar war titles in a series of one shots from a number of the best and brightest creators in the industry, including Darwyn Cooke and Ivan Brandon on WEIRD WAR TALES, B. Clay Moore and Chad Hardin on OUR FIGHTING FORCES, the return of OUR ARMY AT WAR, William Tucci and Justiniano on STAR-SPANGLED WAR STORIES and Matt Surges and artist Phil Winslade on G.I. COMBAT, with each issue sporting a cover from an A-list pool of artists that include Cooke, Mark Schultz, Geof Darrow, Joe Kubert and Brian Bolland.
