Win an Animal Man Card Signed by Jeff Lemire!

Last Wednesday, we offered All-Star Western fans the chance to win a Nighthawk and Cinnamon card signed by Moritat. Fortunately, there was no need to hold a showdown to settle on a winner. We just chose one from the photos you selected:

ALL-STAR WESTERN #0 wowed me this week!

The photo and caption were submitted by @ThomasConnery on Twitter. We couldn’t say how Thomas might fare with a six-shooter, but that’s a great shot.

What’s that? You think you can do better? Well, then today’s your lucky day, pardner, because we’re doing it all again.

This week marks the release of ANIMAL MAN #13, which along with SWAMP THING #13 (also out this week!) launches the highly anticipated Rotworld storyline. The earth has fallen to the Rot and it will be up to Buddy Baker and Alec Holland to save it. Let’s hope they’re successful. But if they’re not, you might want to get a hold of this sweet Animal Man card before the Rot does. Especially since it’s not only signed by Animal Man writer Jeff Lemire, but boasts a pretty fun sketch by him on the back as well.

The front and back of Jeff's card. The signature and sketch are on the back.

As usual, the card is 11” by 14” and is made of heavy card stock. It features Animal Man on the front and Jeff’s signature and sketch on the back. And of course, you need to do a few things if you’d like to get your hands on it.

1) If you're not already doing so, be sure to follow @DCComics on Twitter and Instagram.

2) Pick up some of your favorite new DC comics on Wednesday and take a photograph of you reading them. (If you can’t make it to a comic shop on Wednesday, a photo of you reading any DC comic will do.)

3) Share your picture with us via Instagram and tag @DCComics and #DCComicscontest.

That’s all there is to it! At 5 pm PST on Monday, October 8, 2012, one winner will be chosen at random and direct messaged for his/her mailing address. The winner will be featured on Twitter and if possible, here on DCComics.com. DC Comics will tweet the winner’s photo and a fan shout out on or around Tuesday, October 9, 2012.

Win an All-Star Western Card Signed by Moritat!

Last Wednesday, we offered Fables fans the chance to win a “Cubs in Toyland” card signed by current artists Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha. We got plenty of responses, and even if none of them came from Fabletown, the last thing we’d call our winning photo is mundane:

Queen of my own Toyland!

The photo and caption were submitted by @terracanta on Twitter, who now has a great piece of signed Fables art to compliment that crown. But even if you didn’t win, this tale still has a happy ending. Especially if you’re an All-Star Western fan!

This week marks the release of ALL-STAR WESTERN #0, which reveals how Jonah Hex received his trademark scar. So to celebrate this important chapter in the life of our favorite gunslinger, we’re giving away an All-Star Western card signed by series artist Moritat.

As usual, the card is 11” by 14” and is made of heavy card stock. It features Nighthawk and Cinnamon, leaping to action in a pose that will have you seeing some very sharp stars. If you’d like to get your hands on this ready-for-framing collector’s item, you’re going to need to do a couple things (and they’re slightly different than with previous giveaway, so pay close attention).

Win a Fables Card Signed by Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha

Last Wednesday, we offered fans of Demon Knights, DC Universe Presents and the artists who draw them a chance to win a Deadman card signed by Bernard Chang. The response, unlike Mr. Brand, was anything but dead.

Here’s the winning entry photo:

CAPTION: Why didn’t I start reading this sooner?!? It’s fantastic!

The photo and caption were submitted by @JeremyLivi on Twitter, who along with his new appreciation of Swamp Thing will also be receiving a great new collectible. But if you didn’t win, don’t despair because we’re doing it all over again. If you’re a Vertigo fan, you probably know that FABLES #121 is out this week. This issue wraps up the eight-issue “Cubs in Toyland” storyline that has been brought to vivid life by artists Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha. So to celebrate this acclaimed storyline, we’re giving you a chance to win a Fables “Cubs in Toyland” card signed by both amazing artists!

If you’re new to this, the card is 11” by 14” and is made of heavy card stock. However, if you’d like to get your hands on this ready-for-framing collector’s item, you’re going to need to do a couple things.

Win a Deadman Card Signed by Bernard Chang!

Last Wednesday, we offered fans of Justice League (and fans of rich, spectacular comic book coloring) a chance to win a Justice League card signed by frequent series colorist Alex Sinclair. As usual, you guys came through with some great photos of some great fans reading some great comics, and all we can say is…GREAT!

Here’s the winning entry photo:

Family reading time

The photo and caption were submitted by @iann57 on Twitter, who will now have a great new piece of art for his family room. But if you didn’t win, don’t despair because we’re about to do it all over again. As you may know, DEMON KNIGHTS #0 hits stands this week. This supernatural tale of classic fantasy has been building up a fairly devoted following since its debut a year ago, but with this week’s zero issue, we see how it all began for Etrigan and his human host, Jason Blood. It comes courtesy of writer Paul Cornell and artist Bernard Chang, who previously provided the art for the Deadman-starring debut of DC Universe Presents. So whether you’re a fan of Bernard or of Boston Brand, we think you’re going to want this week’s card signed by Mr. Chang!

As usual, the card is 11” by 14” and is made of heavy card stock. However, if you’d like to get your hands on this ready-for-framing collector’s item, you’re going to need to do a couple things.

1) If you're not already doing so, be sure to follow @DCComics on Twitter and Instagram.

Well, starting today we’re kicking things into overdrive by launching a weekly series of Twitter giveaways!

Last month at Comic-Con, we had over a dozen of your favorite DC writers and artists autograph their SDCC signing cards. The cards are made from sturdy stock, legal-sized and all of them feature art from one of the creator’s projects. All of the cards are suitable for framing and guaranteed to gain you all sorts of comic book cred. And best of all, we intend to give each and every one of them away to fans who follow us on Twitter.

Up first, we have this ghostly 11" by 14" Phantom Stranger card signed by writer Dan DiDio. And he didn’t just sign it. He wrote a very special spoiler on the back concerning next month’s debut issue, PHANTOM STRANGER #0. We’re not going to say what it is. It’s just for the winner of this contest.

If you’d like to win this one-of-a-kind card and be in the know about Phantom Stranger before everyone else, you’re going to need to do a couple things.

3) Share your picture with us via Instagram and tag @DCComics and #newDCday.

That’s all there is to it! At 5 pm PST on Monday, August 27, 2012, one winner will be chosen at random and direct messaged for his/her mailing address. The winner will be featured on Twitter. DC Comics will tweet the winner’s photo and a fan shout out on Tuesday, August 28, 2012.

DIGITAL FIRST SPOTLIGHT: Smallville Season 11

Did you know that you no longer have to wait till Wednesday to read a brand new DC comic? From the early adventures of a still-developing Superman to epic-scale action set far in our future to vastly imaginative Batman tales spun by some of the best creators in comics, you can find the action you crave starring the characters you love Monday through Friday, and you don’t even need to leave your living room to do it. (Also, be sure to read to the end of the article to find out how you can win a free download of each day’s title!)

We wrap up our week of Digital First spotlights with a look at SMALLVILLE SEASON 11, a near-weekly title that takes off right where the popular CW show left off and focuses on Clark Kent’s early experiences as Superman. Even better, Clark’s adventures are penned by none other than Bryan Q. Miller, the former writer and executive story editor of the TV series. Smallville Season 11 recently wrapped up its first “episode,” and today launches into an exciting new one that will (for the first time in the show’s history) bring Superman face-to-face with a certain legendary Caped Crusader.

Here’s what Bryan had to say about the series and why it’s a must-read for fans of the show and fans of Superman:

“Smallville Season 11 – your one-stop shop for not only a weekly continuation of the long-running television series, but all the classic Superman goodness you can ask for, with a few twists thrown in for good measure. Clark Kent and Lois Lane, perpetually engaged? Check. Oliver Queen, openly operating as the Green Arrow, married to none other than Smallville’s own Chloe Sullivan? Check. Lex Luthor, resurrected from the dead with none of his memories, but with a major grudge against Superman? Double check. Oh yeah… and through some whack-a-doo fake science cooked up by yours truly, the consciousness of Lex’s half-sister is rolling around in that beautiful bald head of his. You know… like you do.

When we wrapped our 12-week premiere, ‘Guardian,’ our ensemble was adrift in a sea of drama.  Luthor managed to lace Superman with a radioactive isotope – his satellites can follow the boy in blue everywhere he goes. Which means Clark can’t go home to Lois, or back to the farm, without leading Lex straight back to his secret. Chloe and Oliver tracked a downed spacecraft only to learn that it wasn’t from space at all… It contained Chloe’s doppleganger from an alternate Earth. With her dying breath, Alternate Chloe relayed that Earth 2 had been destroyed, victim to something called ‘The Crisis.’

‘Detective’ picks up three weeks after our last chapter’s bittersweet conclusion. As Lois and Clark struggle to deal with their Luthor-imposed change in status quo, a storm is brewing in a rainy, industrial pit of a city – Gotham. That’s right. After ten years of waiting, Smallville finally gets a visit from Batman. The Batman. Not Bruce Wayne (and lots of talk about bats as we revel in not-so-subtle allusion). No… we get Batman, almost a decade into waging his war on crime. He’s got toys. He’s got skills. He’s got anger. And he’s got a partner – our female Nightwing, Barbara Gordon. Superman, Batman, Green Arrow, Nightwing, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane and a heap of villains. All for 99 cents a week!”

DIGITAL FIRST SPOTLIGHT: Legends of the Dark Knight

Did you know that you no longer have to wait till Wednesday to read a brand new DC comic? From the early adventures of a still-developing Superman to epic-scale action set far in our future to vastly imaginative Batman tales spun by some of the best creators in comics, you can find the action you crave starring the characters you love Monday through Friday, and you don’t even need to leave your living room to do it. (Also, be sure to read to the end of the article to find out how you can win a free download of each day’s title!)

If you’re a Batman fan, you have plenty of great choices when it comes to monthly Bat-books. But are you aware that one of the most original and exciting Batman titles is only available digitally? For the next title in our week of Digital First spotlights, we take a nice long look at LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT, a weekly series of stand-alone tales all starring the Dark Knight and told by some of the most popular writers and artists in comics. Past creators have included JG Jones, Damon Lindelof, Jeff Lemire, Nicola Scott, Ben Templesmith, B. Clay Moore and Steve Niles.

Even better, there are more great legends to come. Today, Legends of the Dark Knight launches into a brand new tale written by I, Vampire writer Joshua Hale Fialkov and drawn by artist extraordinaire Phil Hester. Here’s Joshua to tell you more about it:

“Batman is an icon for one very simple reason. Elasticity. Batman has appeared in so many different versions, from the gun-toting Golden Age original to the guffawing fun of the ’60s Silver Age (and accompanying TV show), to the Grand Guignol glory of the modern age. What was most exciting for me in writing a story of the digital series has been contributing to that legacy of change.

And look at the range of stories we’ve seen so far. From the smart, delicate story behind Lindelof and Lemire’s first entry, to the whizz bang fun of Jonathan Larsen and JG Jones and the dirty, nasty, delight of B. Clay Moore and Ben Templesmith’s, to the thoughtful and heartfelt run by Steve Niles and Trevor Hairsine.

When I first spoke with editor Ben Abernathy about telling a story in such great company, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to tell a story of the city of Gotham, and the people who live in it, constantly rubbing up against the colorful world of the Batman and his rogues gallery. And I wanted to do it with one of the few DC characters who predates Batman (and Superman, even!): Slam Bradley.

Slam is a character that means a lot to the DCU, despite never quite getting the spotlight shone on him. He was the first—the quintessential—pulp detective in a world about to change. Much like Slam’s actual life, he was a solid, strong and smart creation born on the eve of something much different. With the rise of the super heroes, poor Slam held on to a spot in Detective Comics until issue #152, wherein he disappeared more or less until the brilliant work of Ed Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke brought him back to life in the pages of Catwoman.

So, the idea for me was to take that original character, a guy who doesn’t fit in, who knows he’s been muscled out by the kooks in tights, and throw him smack dab in the middle of something that he just can’t quite handle. And if we’re doing noir, who’s a better villain than the Black Mask? Jimmy Cagney with a skull for a head! Beat that!

When we began talking art…well, I laid out my dream artists…and sure enough, I got them. The work of Phil Hester has been a huge inspiration throughout my career. And, oh yeah, he’s a WAY better writer than me, so I got the benefit of not just his pencil but of his amazing storytelling and writer’s brain. He and inker Eric Gapstur and colorist Jim Charalampidis have made what, for me, is one of the most beautiful Bat-comics in a long, long time.

But enough about our little three-parter… (On sale today! Click the link! Seriously!)

What this series represents to me, ultimately, is the power of an idea. The power of a character that’s so well defined and understood you can do literally anything to him and he will not crumble. Whether it’s fighting bad guys in Gotham City alleyways or wrestling Amazo on the Justice League Watchtower, or, yes, doing the Bat-usi, Batman will always come out standing, grimacing, and completely and utterly awesome.

Now, who do I talk to around here about a ‘Tales of the Man of Steel’ series?”
