Superman and the GD Controversy

You might have read online today about a particularly strong reaction that a comic book retailer has had to ACTION COMICS issue 1 by Grant Morrison and Rags Morales. If not, here's the scoop: a retailer in North Carolina was concerned that Superman is cursing when he utters "gd" in the series’ first issue.

Before I could even reach out to Grant Morrison for comment, I received an e-mail from Grant, which read in part:

"It should go without saying that the offending panel and caption, a mere 'GD', is a sound effect grunt - to suggest Superman's breath being forced through gritted teeth - much like 'DHH', 'GNUHH' or the many others used throughout this book and in general in the comics business. It's not in any way representative of God or a curse.”

An exclusive first look at Action Comics #1

Easily one of the most eagerly anticipated books out of the entire DC Comics-The New 52 line-up, ACTION COMICS #1 features a look at our all-new Superman at a point in his history before he's widely known or accepted by the public. Who better to shepherd this story than writer Grant Morrison and artist Rags Morales?

“Superman is just a guy who is very young at this point, and he has big ideas about what is right and wrong,” said Morrison. “And he has the power to implement those ideas.”

Newsarama and Yahoo have an exclusive first preview of ACTION #1, which goes on sale next Wednesday.

(Everybody's Talkin' About) DC Comics-The New 52, Early Tuesday AM Edition

As I type this blog post, the halls of 1700 Broadway are mostly quiet. Quiet, that is, save for the sounds of Jim Lee and Geoff Johns doing another round of morning radio interviews.

With less than 24 hours to go before tonight's midnight launch of DC Comics-The New 52, the press coverage continues to roll in. Among the late night/early morning highlights?

* THE ADVOCATE has an exclusive preview of BATWOMAN # 1.

* Check out Grant Morrison's interview with FAST COMPANY. As the internet noted last week, Grant provides some of the best pull quotes in the comic book industry and his FAST COMPANY interview is no exception. The feature also comes with an exclusive page from ACTION COMICS # 1, which shows Superman transforming into Clark Kent.

* Jim Lee was interviewed by the HOUSTON CHRONICLE.

* TIME OUT CHICAGO interviewed local retailers about DC Comics-The New 52 and the impact of digital on the comic book industry.

Oh and those morning interviews?

Here's a rundown of who Geoff and Jim will be talking with this morning:

8:40-8:50 am--WOCM-FM (OCEAN CITY RADIO)

9:00-9:10 am--WELI-AM (ARTFORD RADIO)

9:15-9:30 am--KRCL (SALT LAKE CITY RADIO)

9:30 – 9:40 am--KNX-AM (LOS ANGELES RADIO)

9:40-9:50 am--WKXL-AM (CONCORD RADIO)

10:10 – 10:20 AM--KFXR-AM (DALLAS RADIO)

Batman vs. The Internet 3.0

Batman Incorporated has moved beyond the physical world and into the virtual one. After Bruce Wayne invites investors to experience virtual reality, dubbed “Internet 3.0,” virtual hijackers take control of the system and threaten to take them out one-by-one in a high stakes game. Can Batman and Oracle protect the investors and quarantine the virus before it’s too late?

BATMAN INCORPORATED #8, in stores tomorrow, is written by Grant Morrison and features art by Scott Clark with Dave Beaty. The issue is the final one in this run of the series.

NPR interview with Grant Morrison and an exclusive image from ACTION COMICS #1

If you missed it over the weekend, Grant Morrison had a great interview with NPR’s show, All Things Considered.

Head on over to NPR to listen to the full interview and hear Grant talk about how he got into the industry, what inspires him as a writer, the fundamental differences between Batman and Superman, and the cultural relevancy of comic books. SDCC - The Day After

(Grant Morrison, Jim Lee and Geoff Johns at the Warner Bros. party on Friday night.)

Well, it's done. Another San Diego Comic-Con in the books.

We met so many fantastic fans (many of whom got Wayne Casino Poker Chips and an assortment of our other fantastic giveaway items) and want to thank them all for their feedback, their comments, their questions and most of all their passion. You all are the reason we keep doing what we're doing and seeing so many assembled in one place is a great experience for all of us here.

The centerpiece of Sunday's panel lineup was the last of a series dedicated to "Designing the New DC Comics." This time the big reveal given to those in the room (and then to those who are friends of ours on Facebook) were looks at the new designs characters will be sporting after September. From BATGIRL to MISTER TERRIFIC to GRIFTER and more, the new outfits and overall looks of the characters was on display and the response was great.

After that the last in a series of panels focusing on DC Comics The New 52 was held and new villains for BATGIRL, FLASH, SUPERGIRL, and FIRESTORM were discussed

The focus then turned back to artwork with a panel featuring Jim Lee, Cully Hammer and Adam Hughes as they shared how they do their artistic work month after month.

And that's that! We'll continue to share in more detail some of the news that came out of Comic-Con but thanks to everyone for another great year. Look for us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with DC Entertainment day in and day out.

“Each decade, these characters represent our own best idea of what we'd like to be.” – Grant Morrison

As part of their extensive coverage of San Diego Comic-Con this week, USA TODAY has posted an article about the evolution of super-heroes. Specifically, how the evolution of super-heroes at this year’s convention are reflections of the times and society we currently live in.

“Each decade, these characters represent our own best idea of what we'd like to be, our own big idea," contributed ACTION COMICS and Supergods writer Grant Morrison. When discussing Superman’s new image, Grant said, “There's a reason why he's dressed in the jeans and the T-shirt and he's Bruce Springsteen Superman. That was the look I wanted to get back, of a genuine working-class hero … You do become a little bit better by trying to imagine what it must be like to think like Superman.”
