Talking GREEN LANTERN #21 With Robert Venditti

Following the thrilling conclusion of writer Geoff Johns’ historic near-decade run on GREEN LANTERN with this month’s issue #20, the acclaimed and New York Times bestselling series will be going in an all-new exciting new direction with the introduction of the new creative team of writer Robert Venditti and artist Billy Tan.

So where will we find protagonist Hal Jordan at the start of the series’ new story arc in GREEN LANTERN #21?

“In some ways, he’ll have more power than he ever has before, and that’s not necessarily a good thing,” Venditti said to IFANBOY. “Hal is the type of guy who flies alone in a fighter jet. He isn’t a platoon leader. He has never asked for nor wanted to be a leader, to have others on the hook for his decisions and actions. Being a hero and being a leader are two separate things, and Hal’s about to learn that the hard way.”

“It’s a really ambitious story. We are not coming out of the gate playing it safe. We are taking a lot of risks and hopefully people will respond in a positive way,” the writer continued to tease to AIN’T IT COOL NEWS.

As for Relic, the Green Lantern universe’s all-new villain who we introduced in our “What’s New In The New 52” column? Well, according to a recent conversation between Venditti and MTV GEEK, he’ll “tie together every Lantern of every color that has ever appeared in any comic book ever.” Now there’s an entrance! And don’t forget to check out Rags Morales’ variant covers for all the Green Lantern family titles this summer, as each one will show part of Relic’s origin story before being collected with new pages and full color/lettering in the series’ September issue.

GREEN LANTERN #21 lands in stores on June 5th.

MTV GEEK Announces Relic-Focused GREEN LANTERN Family Variant Covers

Last week, GREEN LANTERN fans got their first sneak peek at the upcoming all-new villain, Relic.

Today, MTV GEEK exclusively announced that Relic’s origin story will begin to be told in the form of a series of black & white variant covers across all of the “Green Lantern” family of titles from June through August. Drawn by Rags Morales (ACTION COMICS), these variant covers will all give clues to how Relic came to be, and will be collected – fully lettered, in color, and with additional new pages – in the series’ September issue.

“When you very first encounter him, he will be a fully formed menace, but you will get the backstory of how he got to be that way,” GREEN LANTERN writer Robert Venditti revealed to MTV GEEK about Relic. “He’s a completely new character not based on any pre-existing character.”

As for the impact Relic will have on the Green Lantern universe? According to Venditti, he will “tie together every Lantern of every color that has ever appeared in any comic book ever.” Talk about a big bad!

For more from Venditti about Relic, check out MTV GEEK’s full interview with the writer. And while you’re over there, don’t forget to check out their debut of Morales’ variant cover for GREEN LANTERN #21!

5.2 Reasons April Has Kept Us on Edge

BOO!

Did we scare you? Shocks, surprises, twists and turns have been staples in comic book storytelling—nay, all forms of storytelling—since, well, forever. Nothing beats turning the page and gasping at a plot twist or revelation you didn’t see coming.

Every Wednesday comes jam-packed with these moments via DC Comics’ weekly releases, but for the month of April, we definitely upped the ante a bit with special gatefold covers revealing a major twist or surprise aimed to get readers stoked about this month’s issue. Needless to say, there were some shocktasticingly eye-popping moments throughout the month’s releases—from backstory revelations to character deaths to unexpected appearances. And while there are countless examples, here are just 5.2 Reasons April Has Kept Us on Edge.

Though before we get into this week’s column, a note. While we often discuss plot developments here in 5.2 Reasons, this week’s column is all about major April plot twists. Some are pretty well known by now, but others may be new to you if you’re behind on your comic book reading. In other words, SPOILERS AHEAD! And now that that’s out of the way…

1. A Familiar Face

Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason have been killing it on Batman and Robin ever since the title’s launch in September 2011. After last month’s phenomenal and touching silent issue commemorating the tragic death of Damian Wayne, they followed it up with an issue featuring none other than Carrie Kelly, the would-be Robin of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.

2. This Is How the World Ends

Poor, poor Sinestro. He might not be the nicest of people, but Sinestro really was trying when it came to his sudden and unexpected duties as a Green Lantern. In fact, he was doing a shockingly good job and it seemed that the one-time villain we all knew might actually make it as a hero—that is until the First Lantern decided to go, “Ha! To heck with that!” and proceeded to BLOW UP SINESTRO’S HOME PLANET pushing him to embrace the power of Fear once more.

3. I Have a Question

Ever since his appearance in the DC COMICS—THE NEW 52 FCBD special, fans have been questioning where exactly the Question went. After a long absence, the mysterious member of the Trinity of Sin unexpectedly reappeared in the pages of this month’s Phantom Stranger... and proceeded to betray the titular the hero, leaving him for dead.
