Tyler Kirkham on GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS

(The cover for GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #1 by Tyler Kirkham and BATT)

Starting this September, artist Tyler Kirkham (GREEN LANTERN CORPS) will be illustrating (along with BATT) the new series, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS. Led by Kyle Rayner, the New Guardians are a powerful team comprised of the full spectrum of the corps. We caught up with Tyler during his early process of illustrating the new series.

THE SOURCE: What about DC's new 52 titles excites you the most?

TYLER KIRKHAM: There are still DC books I'm not familiar with so this will help me to start from scratch, and pick up books I've wanted to read for a while. I also plan on getting an iPad or tablet soon and want to start reading some of my books digitally. So with the books starting from # 1, I can have a whole series from the beginning. I'm extremely excited about it.

How and why are you shaking up the series' status quo?

Well my series is one of the new ones. GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS. I'm glad Kyle will still be staring in my new book. I really love drawing him. This book will focus on all the ring color corps, so well will get to see a lot more of the Lantern universe than the other Lantern titles.

What new characters will debut in the series?

All I can say for now is Kyle Rayner. But there will be members from all the other color corps.

Will we see new character designs?

Most likely. As of now, we’re still in the development stage.

What's the biggest surprise you've had working on this character/book?

As I'm just getting started, the whole series is a surprise to me. I think the whole story will surprise people, as we discover secrets from all the other corps.

What secret has been the hardest to keep?

Just the fact that I wasn't staying on the GREEN LANTERN CORPS series. I wanted to tell some of my friends and fans but held off until it was announced.

What’s the unofficial tagline for this series, in your own words?

“What will happen when you put a member from all the Lantern corps in the same room?”

War of the Green Lanterns: The Epic Conclusion Is Here

Last we saw Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner, they made the unprecedented decision to remove their rings in the midst of battle. In the conclusion of the epic War of the Green Lanterns, the duo reunite with John Stewart and Kyle Rayner to stop the evil forces consuming their fellow Corps members. Their strategy will not only put their lives at stake, but will also go down as one of the riskiest acts committed in the Corps’ history.

GREEN LANTERN #67 by Geoff Johns and artists Doug Mahnke, Christian Alamy, Keith Champagne, Mark Irwin and Tom Nguyen hits stores today!

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “What would Hal Jordan be like if he never became a Green Lantern?” – Adam Schlagman

flashpoint-logo_whiteHal Jordan is known for a lot of things – reckless behavior, a flagrant disregard for authority, and a flair for the wild side to name a few. But with Abin Sur being very much alive in the FLASHPOINT universe, what does this mean for Hal? Can he still move beyond his brash behavior and step up to the role of the hero without being chosen by a ring? In FLASHPOINT: HAL JORDAN #1, Hal is put to the test.

“What would Hal Jordan be like if he never became a Green Lantern?” writer Adam Schlagman asks. “Would he finally be in a committed relationship with Carol Ferris or remain his irresponsible self? In this world on the verge of apocalyptic war, can one reckless test pilot finally accept responsibility and defeat agents from Atlantis, Invisible Planes, and a Hydra? And is he capable of the sacrifice required to drop the Green Arrow bomb?”

FLASHPOINT: HAL JORDAN #1 features art by Ben Oliver and a cover by Rags Morales and Gabe Eltaeb. Head over to IGN to view exclusive preview pages and read the book when it hits stands next week.

Boodikka the Alpha Lantern from Bellatrix

REAL NAME: Boodikka

OCCUPATION: Green Lantern, Warrior, Mercenary

BASE OF OPERATIONS: Sector 1414

HOMEWORLD: Bellatrix

HEIGHT: 5' 8"

WEIGHT: 125 lbs.

EYES: Green

HAIR: Black

FIRST APPEARANCE: Green Lantern, Vol. 3, #20 (December, 1991)

AKA: Green Lantern, Alpha Lantern

BACKGROUND from the comic books:

Boodikka comes from a warrior race, and was a member of a highly sought-after mercenary team known as the Bellatrix Bombers until she was chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps. Her lust for battle and anti-authoritarian streak overwhelmed her need for discipline several times during her training, and she fell into frequent disputes with her instructor, Kilowog. However, she emerged a capable wielder of the power ring, and one of the Corps' fiercest members.

Boodikka is a charter member of the Alpha Lanterns, a team working within the Corps to police its members. On accepting the post, Boodikka's physiology was altered, making her, essentially, a cyborg. As an Alpha Lantern, she possesses a direct connection to the Book of Oa's Laws and the Central Power Battery.

Boodikka is a humanoid female with an extremely athletic physique. She has pink skin, and her hair is styled in such a way as to give the appearance of wings.

ATTRIBUTES:

* Green Lantern ring allows for a protective shield, flight, and energy constructs.

* Total mastery of hand-to-hand combat and many weapons.

* Cyborg enhancements to physiology, augmenting speed and strength.

Get to know Lin Canar and Bzzd

lin_canar1LIN CANAR

OCCUPATION: Green Lantern, Oceanographer

BASE OF OPERATIONS: Sector 1582

HOMEWORLD: Fluvian

HEIGHT: 8' 9"

WEIGHT: 100 lbs.

EYES: Green

HAIR: None

FIRST APPEARANCE: Green Lantern Corps Quarterly, #3 (Winter, 1992)

AKA: Green Lantern

BACKGROUND from the comic books:

An oceanographer on his homeworld, specializing in underwater energy emissions, Lin Canar initially refused his selection as a Green Lantern, preferring to serve his people in his professional capacity. But when his replacement went about eradicating crime on Fluvian by the wholesale destruction of the class of citizens most likely to commit crimes, Lin Canar stepped in to stop him. Only after this did Lin Canar accept the job of Green Lantern.

Like all denizens of Fluvian, Lin Canar is a creature of vegetable and plant matter, and lives beneath the surface of the planet's massive oceans. As a member of his planet's Research Circle, Lin Canar possesses a scientist's and explorer's curiosity. He is meticulous and thoughtful, well-respected by his fellow Lanterns.

Lin Canar is a slender creature whose most notable features are glowing eyes that allow him to see at extreme depths, and the frond-like appendages that help him propel himself through strong currents. Despite his delicate appearance, Lin Canar is deceptively strong even without his ring, able to survive the pressures of the deep. His ring constructs reflect the environment from which he comes, tending toward the aquatic in design.

ATTRIBUTES:

* Green Lantern ring allows for a protective shield, flight, and energy constructs.

* Powerful, graceful and expert swimmer.

* Can withstand severe pressure.

* Above-average physical strength.

* Able to see in low-light conditions.

bzzd_luke-ross1BZZD

REAL NAME: Bzzd

OCCUPATION: Green Lantern

BASE OF OPERATIONS: Sector 2261

HOMEWORLD: Aplaton

HEIGHT: 1' 3"

WEIGHT: 6 lbs.

EYES: Red

HAIR: None

FIRST APPEARANCE: Green Lantern Corps #12 (July, 2007)

AKA: Green Lantern

BACKGROUND from the comic books:

An insectile Green Lantern no bigger than a common Earth housefly, Bzzd is nonetheless one of the most-respected members of the Corps because of his tremendous willpower. Though tiny, the constructs he builds with his ring are frequently enormous in size. Fast and instinctive, Bzzd is a master improvisational tactician, and useful for missions that require stealth.

Bzzd enjoys being underestimated, relishing the chance to disprove those who believe that size matters. For situations where his ring cannot solve the problem, Bzzd can fall back on his natural stinger, which releases venom powerful enough to incapacitate creatures many times Bzzd's size.

ATTRIBUTES:

* Green Lantern ring allows for a protective shield, flight, and energy constructs.

* Small size allows for passage through tight quarters.

* Near-omnidirectional vision.

* Powerful natural stinger with debilitating bio-venom.

* Super-normal speed.
