Being the son of Senator Robert Hammond, Hector was often brought to Ferris Air to witness the experimental aircrafts Carl Ferris was developing for the government. Even this didn't intrigue him but something else at the airbase did or rather someone else: Carol Ferris. Hector was instantly enamored by her sweet and sassy nature. Unfortunately Carol didn't pay him much attention as she enjoyed spending time with Hal Jordan.

After college, Hector was still trapped in the shadow of Hal who was now working alongside Carol. The two were becoming inseparable making Hector extremely irritated. Hector was also jealous of Hal because deep down he knew his father wished he was more like him.

Using his connections, Senator Hammond secured Hector a job for a top secret government research facility. Hector couldn't be more thrilled, his father finally appreciated him and he was doing everything he loved.

The government quarantined a crash site and recovered the dead body of Green Lantern Abin Sur. Hector was given the opportunity to examine and dissect the alien corpse. During the autopsy, the creature known as Parallax, who was dwelling inside the remains, infected him. Hector's brain slowly began to grow larger as his head swelled to accommodate the size. When Hal was hired by Ferris Air, Carol and her childhood friend became reacquainted. Her outspoken attitude quickly drew Hal's attention and the attraction was mutual. FIRST APPEARANCE: Showcase vol. 1 #22 (September/October, 1959)

BACKGROUND from the comic books:

Hal Jordan always wanted to be a pilot. He idolized his father, test pilot Martin H. Jordan and dreamed of following in his footsteps. Hal would constantly sneak onto the grounds of Ferris Air base to witness his Dad in action. There he met the most beautiful girl he ever laid his eyes on, Carol Ferris, the daughter of Carl Ferris who owned the airbase. Like Hal, Carol was determined to become a pilot as well. One day while watching one of his father's test flights with her, Hal experienced his greatest fear: the plane malfunctioned exploding and instantly killing his Dad.

More determined than ever to become a pilot and honor his late father, Hal enlisted in the Air Force on the day he turned sixteen. Clearly gifted, Hal excelled at flying but his cocky reckless behavior led to his dishonorable discharge.

Devastated that he failed his Dad, Hal turned to Carl who hired him as a test pilot. Hal took up the codename Highball quickly becoming their best yet riskiest pilot as he constantly pushed planes beyond their limits, often times destroying expensive aircrafts. With every plane that Hal took down, expert mechanic Tom Kalmaaki was there to build them up again. Thus, he grew to be a close friend and confidant.

Upon joining Ferris Air, Hal was reunited with his childhood friend Carol, who has become a skilled test pilot herself. Flying side by side has awakened feelings he never knew he had for her. Though Hal's charm has wooed many women, Carol has denied him, putting her job before a personal relationship. This hasn't deterred him from continuing his pursuit of her affection.

Green Lantern Abin Sur crash-landed on earth and in his final moment sent his ring in search of a replacement. Hal was selected as his successor for his incredible willpower and fearlessness thus making him the first Earthling inducted into the Green Lantern Corps. Hal received animosity and ill respect from his alien peers who believe Earth to be a backwater planet. In spite of this, he has shown strong resolve while training under drill sergeant Kilowog. Hal has also been mentored by Abin's friend Sinestro, considered the greatest Green Lantern of all. Sinestro's demeanor irritates Hal creating friction between the two.

Hal is quickly growing into his own as a Corpsman. His piloting skills have helped him master ring flight. FIRST APPEARANCE (Oan Power Ring): Showcase vol. 1 #22 (September/October, 1959)

AKA: Green Lantern Ring / Power Ring

Art by Ethan Van Sciver

BACKGROUND:

Forged within the foundry on Oa b by the Guardians of the Universe, Power Rings provide Lantern's their abilities. However, not anyone can wield a green ring. Corpsmen are specifically selected based on their strength of willpower. The stronger the will, the more effective the ring becomes.

A Power Ring is considered by many to be the most powerful weapon in the universe because of the hard energy projections they can create. These constructs can become any given shape and are only limited by the ingenuity of the user. Each design is unique to the personality of its creator and may be as simple as an energy trap to apprehend a perpetrator or complex as a massive ship used to evacuate a city.

Designed to assist and protect the Corps in policing the universe, these rings generate the standard-issue Green Lantern uniform and provide a force field for the wearer. They also impart the powers of flight, space travel, a universal translator for all alien languages and possess knowledge from the Book of Oa that may aid a Lantern on their mission. These rings of will also act as emergency homing beacons and allow communication between all other Corps members.

A Power Ring's energy is limited and depletes upon each usage requiring periodic recharging from a Lantern's personal power battery. A ring's energy lasts approximately twenty-four Earth hours.

ATTRIBUTES:

  • Can store an average of twenty-four Earth hours of willpower energy.
  • Allows a Lantern to fly, create a protective shield, energy constructs and a Green Lantern uniform.
  • Can be willed to appear invisible.
