Talking the Launch of BATMAN/SUPERMAN with Greg Pak

It’s hard to think of a better time than this summer to be a Superman fan.

In June alone, the Man of Steel will not only star in a new film, but also in two all-new ongoing comic book series: SUPERMAN UNCHAINED and BATMAN/SUPERMAN! Written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Jae Lee, BATMAN/SUPERMAN is an exciting and bold new title that will tell the definitive story of how Batman and Superman met in the DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 universe.

“Our story takes place around the time of Grant Morrison’s ACTION COMICS #1. So it takes place when both of these guys are very young and very new to the whole superhero thing,” Pak revealed to MTV GEEK earlier today. “We're going to have this fantastic opportunity to see how these very young guys view each other. Imagine finding out for the first time about some guy who runs around in a bat costume fighting crime or some guy with these insane powers doing the same thing. Each hero's reaction to the other is going to surprise folks a little bit, because they're both so new. Their reactions to each other are going to be a lot more dangerous than you're used to thinking about when you think about Batman and Superman.”

“There’s a hugely fun opportunity right now in the New 52 because the way they’ve been set up, particularly in the time frame we’re looking at, and they have no idea about the existence of the other guy,” Pak continued to IGN. “They don’t even know about other superheroes. So when they first bump into each other, they immediately assume the other guy is the most dangerous guy on the planet. And you know what? Each guy might be right about that. They’re powerful enough, they’re young enough, and they’re cocky enough that if they make mistakes, they could make huge mistakes. That’s a really great place to plunge into this relationship and see them push each other in really big ways at this really early stage. I think it’s just going to fuel a lot of great character moments, character development, and story.”

USA TODAY Reveals SUPERMAN UNCHAINED, Free Comic Book Day details, and more!

Back in October, we announced that writer Scott Snyder and artist Jim Lee would be teaming up to bring you a new Superman title that promises to elevate the already high-flying hero to new heights and force him to face off against foes familiar and new, as only two of the top industry talents can.

Yesterday, USA TODAY exclusively announced that the series, which lands in stores this June, will be titled SUPERMAN UNCHAINED.

“We're all fans and we've all known this character for a long time," Jim Lee told USA TODAY about the challenge of tackling the iconic Man of Steel. “You have to fight your natural tendency to do what you know or what you've always thought the character to be.”

Along with Snyder, Lee hopes that the series will show readers “really how this small little figure, this human-shaped character, can literally move mountains.” But the title is not the only news we have to share about this exciting new series!

USA TODAY also announced that SUPERMAN UNCHAINED will feature a back-up story written by Snyder and illustrated by Dustin Nguyen. They also revealed that fans will get their first look at this eagerly-anticipated series when a sneak peek of it will be featured in this year’s annual Free Comic Book Day issue.

Head on over to USA TODAY to read their full coverage, including interviews with the SUPERMAN UNCHAINED creative team of Jim Lee and Scott Snyder, as well as with Greg Pak and Jae Lee, the creative team of the recently announced new series, BATMAN/SUPERMAN (which will also be launching in June).

USA TODAY Announces BATMAN/SUPERMAN

This afternoon, USA TODAY announced the launch of an all-new ongoing series that will be hitting stands this June: BATMAN/SUPERMAN. Written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Jae Lee, this exciting and bold new title will kick off this spring and tell the definitive story of how Batman and Superman met in the DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 universe.

“It is a real thrill, and it's particularly a thrill because we're being given some real leeway to do some really important storytelling with these characters. It really defines some great things and to depict some really key moments for them,” Pak told USA TODAY about BATMAN/SUPERMAN. The series will be “a really exciting place to discover who these guys are, and the things we're going to discover particularly in this first story arc will have ramifications later on down the line. We're going to start in the past but it'll reverberate through. It'll be big and crazy and tons of fun.”
