Everyone’s Talkin’ About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Monday Evening (PT) Edition

Ever since we launched DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, we’ve been trying to find the perfect outlet to post each exclusive preview. What better match, then, is there for BATMAN AND ROBIN than WIRED’s GEEKDAD? Head on over to their website to see an amazing 6-page sequence from issue #3, which is all about the tension between Bruce Wayne and his son, Damian.

USA TODAY previewed RESURRECTION MAN #3 and spoke with series writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. "His mortal soul is in jeopardy in a much greater way. The stakes are much higher than simply life or death," Abnett told them. “There are serious repercussions about heaven and hell and what these supernatural powers are interested in. That's really going to play out the next few issues where you've got forces both mortal and immortal fighting over him because he is so important."

LOS ANGELES TIMES’ HERO COMPLEX spoke with the acclaimed creative team behind WONDER WOMAN, Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang. “We’re striving for something that speaks to a certain timelessness but at the same time doesn’t get bogged down with older notions of the Greek gods,” Chiang said of the series. “We’ve done away with togas and sandals and stuff like that in order to make you look at them with new eyes. We want the characters to look and sound different, we want them to act different than you would expect … The fact that all of the Greek myths are really rooted in human behavior is great.”

IGN spoke with NIGHTWING writer Kyle Higgins about the Gotham hero. “He grew up a sidekick, studying under the best, then left to spread his proverbial ‘wings’ but ultimately came back to take his mentor's place,” Higgins said. “In a medium where change is hard to facilitate, Dick is a character that has grown and developed -- he's a character who is built on the very idea of change.” While you’re at IGN, be sure to check out their exclusive preview of SUICIDE SQUAD #3.

Curious what else is coming out this week? POPMATTERS previewed DEMON KNIGHTS #3, COMPLEX MAGAZINE previewed MISTER TERRIFIC #3 and DC Comics’ official Facebook page has your first sneak peek at this week’s GRIFTER #3.

Everybody's Talkin' About BATMAN: NOEL

With Halloween behind us and Thanksgiving fast approaching, it’s time to start decking the halls and looking forward to the winter holidays. And who better to help ring in tidings of comfort and joy than…Batman? Yes, your read it right; the Dark Knight is starring in BATMAN: NOEL – a unique take on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol set in Gotham City, with the caped crusader filling Scrooge’s miserly boots. The book debuts in comic book stores today, and writer/artist Lee Bermejo has been making the rounds to talk about his work – and share some exclusive artwork from the book.

Bermejo spoke with USA TODAY, explaining the impetus for this idea and the parallel between Batman and Ebenezer Scrooge. "Very much like the character of Scrooge, as a younger man he was presented as a disturbed but bright fellow — he wasn't quite that bitter old man. That's very easily analogous to Batman's own history," Bermejo said.

And further discussing parallels between Batman and Scrooge, Bermejo talked to IGN about the characters’ shared place in the cultural heritage. “I'm a pretty firm believer in there being a few characters that, to me, don't really fall into pop culture anymore, at least in terms of my definition of pop culture. They've just been around too long at this point and popular too long. Also what's important to know is that they're just able to adapt and evolve. They're not necessarily indicative of their time. I think that makes them more literary figures than pop culture,” he said.

Check out both sites for the complete interviews, as well as exclusive artwork from BATMAN: NOEL. And if that’s not enough for you, COMPLEX MAGAZINE, WIRED and UGO all have their own exclusive preview pages from the book, as well.

BATMAN: NOEL goes on sale in comic book stores today, and in book stores November 8.

Everyone’s Talkin’ About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Friday Afternoon (ET) Edition

MAXIM chatted with AQUAMAN writer Geoff Johns who spoke in the defense of Aquaman and his cool cast of characters. . “Her background is really interesting,” Johns said of Mera. “She felt very strong to me, her hydroconnect powers are very interesting - controlling the water is visually beautiful and I felt the character was very appealing. That’s why we introduced her in BLACKEST NIGHT and had her stand on her own before we brought Aquaman in. You know, I think people respond to the character because she is such a strong, confident kickass superhero.”

TV GUIDE MAGAZINE interviewed BATWING writer Judd Winick. Head on over to their website to read what he had to say and to check out an exclusive preview of issue #3, which hits stores next week.

Speaking of previews, IGN has your exclusive first look at STORMWATCH #3. And while you’re on their site, be sure to check out their list of eight comic book writers to put on your radar, including Joshua Hale Fialkov, J.T. Krul and Sterling Gates.

COMIC BOOK RESOURCES did the Monster Mash with Dan DiDio, Keith Giffen and Jeff Lemire, who teased the upcoming crossover between O.M.A.C. and FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. “The real subtext that's going on here -- and there's actually not that much subtext -- is seeing a little a bit of what Checkmate versus S.H.A.D.E. is about. How the two different agencies compare to each other or how they look at each other,” DiDio said. “The other subplot that is really interesting is, without giving too much away, Brother Eye might want something from S.H.A.D.E. and this might be a way of putting up a big distraction,” Lemire continued. “Trying to slip in the back door.”

Fan of The Big Bang Theory? Then head on over to ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY to check out Jim Lee’s awesome sketch of Leonard as a ThunderCat. Meanwhile, WIRED’s UNDERWIRE named The Joker as comics’ greatest supervillain.

Clark and Lois Talk about the Future of Print (While Everybody’s Talkin’ About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52)

Have a case of the Mondays? No worries. Loads of exclusive previews ran over the weekend and they just might help distract you from the impending work week. Ready?

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL’s SPEAKEASY BLOG ran an exclusive preview of SUPERMAN #2, which finds Daily Planet co-workers Clark Kent and Lois Lane discussing the future of print journalism.

USA TODAY gave you a first look at ALL-STAR WESTERN #2. "We're uncovering a bigger chunk of the mystery surrounding the Gotham Butcher and what exactly is happening in the fledgling city of Gotham, at its very core of its industrial revolution at that time," said series co-writer Justin Gray. "The gambit being made by a certain criminal underworld to establish their roots in Gotham would have lasting implications throughout, all the way to the timeline with Batman."

Curious what happens when members from the entire color spectrum of the Green Lantern Corps come together? Then look no further than UGO, who has your first look at GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #2.

A new fury is unleashed in THE FURY OF FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MEN #2 and KOTAKU has your exclusive first sneak peek at it.

Take a glimpse at Carter Hall vs. the newly awakened Morphicus in THE SAVAGE HAWKMAN #2 over at GAWKER’S IO9.

COMICVINE teases at the secrets Lady Blackhawk is keeping to herself with their preview of BLACKHAWKS #2.

Meanwhile, THE ONION’S A.V. CLUB ran a profile of BATMAN and SWAMP THING writer Scott Snyder. “What if there’s a reason that he was chosen? What if there’s something in his past? What if he’s always known that Swamp Thing was waiting for him and waiting to claim him?” Snyder said of SWAMP THING protagonist Alec Holland. “What if he wasn’t just meant to be Swamp Thing, but the accident that supposedly turned him into Swamp Thing actually prevented him from becoming the Swamp Thing he was supposed to be, because you’re supposed to bond to the Green in your life, and the accident killed him? And this idea that he’s not just supposed to be Swamp Thing, but he’s supposed to be the greatest Swap Thing ever. We’ve never seen that creature that he could be, hypothetically. Once I had that I knew that was it. I was like, ‘This is my story.’ It’s everything I love to write about and I’ve been a fan of the character forever.”

And don’t worry. It may be Monday, but we’ll have all sorts of interesting things happening this week on THE SOURCE.

Everybody’s Talkin’ About The Weekend (and DC COMICS-THE NEW 52), Friday Afternoon (ET) Edition

You might have heard: it's the weekend after NYCC. So the DC Entertainment PR team will be heading our separate ways for two days of rest and relaxation, which translates roughly to attending a wedding, watching scary movies, picking out pumpkins and laundry. Oh, there will be laundry. Fret not. Before we sign off for the weekend, we have a guide to the latest and greatest coverage:

LIBRARY JOURNAL interviewed DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras about DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. “Comics can be about Superman battling aliens in a big, blazing cosmic adventure, or they can equally be about Swamp Thing learning about his inner humanity in a quiet story about loss," said Harras. "Comics are about characters so compelling that readers come back month after month, year after year, to see what happens next.”

COMICVINE has a look at changes to JUSTICE LEAGUE in DC COMICS: THE NEW 52.

NEWSARAMA has an interview with the bestselling creative team of THE FLASH.

AMAZON’s OMNIVORACIOUS blogger is excited about BATMAN: DEATH BY DESIGN, the original graphic novel by Chip Kidd and Dave Taylor that will be hitting stores next year.

(Ethan Van Sciver’s variant cover for GREEN LANTERN #3)

CNN’s GEEK OUT has your first look at GREEN LANTERN #2 by Geoff Johns, Doug Mahnke, Christian Alamy and Keith Champagne.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER’s HEAT VISION previewed FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. #2.

THE LOS ANGELES TIMES’ HERO COMPLEX debuted pages from MISTER TERRIFIC #2 by Eric Wallace, Gianluca Gugliotta and Wayne Faucher.

IGN gave you your first glimpse at SUPERBOY #2 by Scott Lobdell, R.B. Silva and Rob Lean.

Following yesterday's NEW YORK POST newsbreak, AIN’T IT COOL NEWS caught up with WONDER WOMAN writer Brian Azzarello. “You read some of those stories, those are the most human stories that have ever been written,” Azzarello said of the Greek mythology inspiring his series. “They are as emotionally damaged as a lot of people are. And they’re just as damaging! They’re selfish, capricious, angry, loving, loyal, they betray…they’re like human emotions turned up to 11.”

THE TORONTO STAR chatted with local Canadian artists Jeff Lemire, Francis Manapul and Ken Lashley about their respective series and DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. “I think the books are different, which is something I was looking for,” Lemire said of the relaunch. “Animal Man is a very furious, very dark, emotional story, while Frankenstein is a really big, fun action-adventure, kind of over-the-top sort of thing.”

And while everyone's still talking about DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, there's another major announcement for DC Entertainment today. Timed to the start of the Frankfurt Book Festival in Germany, USA TODAY announced Vertigo's acquisition of pop culture phenomenon The Millennium Trilogy on the front page of their Life section this morning. Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy, which chronicles the stories of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist, will get the graphic novel treatment beginning with next year’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Each book in the trilogy will be divided into two volumes and will be published under DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint. Look for THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE in 2013 and THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS’ NEST in 2014.

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC Comics-The New 52, Friday Afternoon (ET) Edition

IGN continued their series of interviews with all of the creative teams behind DC Comics-The New 52. This time around, they caught up with Peter Milligan (JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK), Gail Simone and Ethan Van Sciver (THE FURY OF FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MEN), and Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti (ALL-STAR WESTERN). “Our goal with Gotham was to make it less of a backdrop and more of a living, breathing character,” Gray explained of his book’s setting. “Placing Jonah Hex there, a man used to wide open spaces and solitude only helps his character and the mythology of Gotham.”

COMIC BOOK RESOURCES interviewed ACTION COMICS writer Grant Morrison. “Part of this first story arc shows how he goes from being an outlaw to the world's first superhero,” Morrison said of Superman. “It's very much about that and about the pressures that would be placed on you if you had this bright idea that you were going to change the world.”

And speaking of COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, head on over to their site to check out their exclusive preview of RED LANTERNS #2.
